Algebra. YUCK.
Okay, not all of you may
agree… but most of you do. However, despite being one of the least
popular subjects in school, it‟s amazing how
many of us would rather rely on suspect
spiritual mathematical formulas
than on the leading of the Holy
Ghost!
As the Church learns to
Build on Calvary this month, Am-
plify wants to make sure that we
understand there is NOTHING
ELSE we can build our salvation
off of other than the sacrifice Je-
sus Christ made for you and for
me. There is not a sequence of
good works, no formula of self-
righteous deeds, no godly life-style
that in-and-of itself will eventually
equate to forgiveness of sins.
No matter how you add

Following God’s Plan Sometimes in life we can
get so caught up with “things”
that we lose sight of what God is
doing, or trying to do in and
through us. Actually, at least for
me, it would be more accurate to
say “often” or “usually”. Things
like what we want, who we like,
what our friends think, how we
feel about our parents, where
we are going to go to college, if
we are going to college, what we
are going to study at college,
who am I, who am I going to be,
and on and on. All of this can be
overwhelming and cause us to
lose focus.
I remember as a teenager
being full of ideas and dreams of
who I was and what my life was
going to be like. I remember
days when I knew exactly who I
was going to be and what God
was going to do in my life. Then
something would happen or my
parents would say something,
and I would be plunged back
into the confusion. “Now what? I
thought I had everything figured
out and now it just fell apart.”
Typical teenage emotion, right?
Actually, these types of feelings
will continue throughout life,
though they do seem to be a lit-
tle more prevalent through ado-
lescence. So how do we work
through this? How do we make
sure we follow God’s plan for
us? (And have the right signifi-
cant other, and pick the right col-
lege, and….) Well, there are a
few things that can help us see
life a bit more clearly.
First, seek God—
sincerely. Read your Bible and
pray, yes, but then take the time
to listen to God also. Meditate
on the verses you read, mean-
ing: think about them, both what
they really mean and how they
apply to your life.
Second, listen to your
parents, grandparents, pastor,
student pastor, etc. I know, I
know. You hear it all the time
and it gets frustrating. I mean
sometimes these people just
don’t understand you, and they
want you to be something en-
tirely different from what you
want. But you know, the wisest,
and possibly richest, man that
ever lived (other than Jesus
Christ) gave this advice all the
time. In Proverbs, King Solomon
said over and over again to lis-
ten to your father and mother
and heed their advice. They do
understand more than you think,
and they care about you more
than just about anyone else in
the world.
Third, remember that you
need to look at the big picture.
When things don’t go the way
you planned or things are just
going badly, don’t let yourself
freak out—at least not too much.
God sometimes has bigger
plans than we do. C.S. Lewis
wrote one of the most beautiful
allegories of this that I have ever
heard. In his story “The Horse
and His Boy” from the
“Chronicles of Narnia”, he tells
the story of a young boy who
had a very difficult childhood. As
the story progresses, everything
seems to go wrong for him. In
one of his lowest moments, he is
feeling very sorry for himself and
is recounting to a stranger, who
is really the great King, or repre-
sentation of Jesus, in the story,
all of the unfortunate things that
had happened in his life. The
stranger then proceeds to tell
the boy that he does not call him
unfortunate and explains how he
had actually used many of the
“unfortunate” things that hap-
pened to lead him to his rightful
place as a prince. It is a beauti-
ful story and shows so clearly
how God’s ways are much big-
ger than our own ways and how
He can use anything for our
good.
So hang in there. Seek
God with your whole heart, heed
wise and godly counsel, and
keep your focus on more than
the things that are right in front
of you. God has a purpose for
you, and He is just waiting to do
great things in your life!
