June President’s Letter
Dear Red River Members,
Summer is officially here! I hope you all have a fun summer with family and friends. For those of you taking vacations, I hope you have safe travels.
Our Advisor, Robert Stroud did a GREAT job as our speaker last month and Red River is so thankful for him and all of our Advi-sors!! They are truly helpful and supportive of our organization!
I know September is still a few months away but its never to early to start planning your trip to the ADDC Convention in Kansas City, hope you can be there September 18-21.
I know we all are really busy with different things but please try and make a membership meeting, Susie has had some really great speakers so far this year and we are very thankful!!!
I hope to see you at our meeting Tuesday, June 25th !
Bobbie June, 2019

HE KNOWS MORE THAN HE ADMITS
Robert Stroud opens our May meeting with “I don’t know what I am talking about!” Members of Red River Desk & Derrick know this to be all too false. Mr. Stroud, a Petroleum Engineer and independent oil and gas developer of Stroud Production LLC, has been an Advisor to our group for many years. Not only does he graciously accept our invitations to speak at our meetings, but he does it with enthusiasm and encouragement. May 2019 was no different. Being our annual Industry Appreciation meeting, his
topic created a perfect setting.
Mr. Stroud vows he loves his vocation and while his topic was literally, “I Don’t Know What I Am Talking About” and he claims to be a “off the cuff” kind of guy, we did find that he does his research, views his research with an unbiased approach and delivers the message with as much information as
possible to give the listener much food for thought!
Keeping with current events while straddling the opinion fence, Mr. Stroud begins his presentation with the idea that we are (world) awash in oil and gas while also condemning it! Speaking of man’s pres-ence on the earth and the effects to the environment. Whether it be by simply walking across the grass and stepping on creatures or bulldozing a path for a new road all the way to drilling for oil or gas, all affects the world! His words are strong and fast and making no bones that he sees the arrogance of man thinking we can improve or affect our world while admitting the more we understand, the more we realize we don’t know. Reciting history, Mr. Stroud points to a time period when strip mining was “appropriate”, as well as the use of asbestos, saltwater disposal, slavery etc. As our knowledge
evolves, today’s generation pays the price for prior generations actions.
Showing data from sources such as EPA, EIA, and API, Mr. Stroud shares daily oil production today at around 101.1 million bbl creating an increase in production throughout the last 34 years with the US becoming the largest producer of oil since 1973 with Russia and Saudi Arabia following. This being primarily due to state of the art technology in horizontal drilling and fracking, particularly in the Per-mian Basin. The effect of modern technology and human knowledge has the world using more energy
than ever before.
Transitioning to the dreaded topic of climate change also known as global warming, Mr. Stroud assert-
ed that “our planet is warming” and has been happening since we came out of the last ice age 2.6 mil-
lion years ago. “The earth changes, shifts and evolves regardless of human intervention”. Mr. Stroud
admittedly explains the question he cannot answer is to what extent does human effect have on the
changing earth. With some reasons being obvious like CO2, methane and one not readily known by the
public, water vapor. He has yet to find statistics on cow flatulence.(1) A 2017 pie chart shows U.S.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions of 82% Carbon Dioxide, 10% Methane with Nitrous Oxide and Fluorinated
Page 4
HE KNOWS MORE THAN HE ADMITS (cont’d)
Gases following with transportation contributing 29% and electricity 28% of these emissions. (Does
replacing fossil fuels with electricity solve the issue of global warming?)
Electricity typically comes from batteries. Mr. Stroud offers that for every one pound of battery pro-duced it is estimated that over 50 pounds of materials are mined, moved or processed. Once again, we
are affecting the earth mining these rare minerals and materials.
In closing, Mr. Stroud suggests the “Green New Deal” doesn’t work mathematically, but while assert-ing that we have the moral obligation to make changes in order to not only save lives but to enhance
the lives of our loved ones for years to come.
(1) There are currently approximately 1.3 to 1.5 billion cows grazing, sleeping, and chewing their cud
at any given time on Earth.
