3. When carving any portrait, start with the the eyes. Use an awl or small nail to punch out the highlight in each eye first, then carefully carve out or shade the areas directly around each eye. Next, go inch by inch, shaving and carving the areas around the mouth and nose.
4. Now carve or shade the highlights in the hair. Carve out the areas in the cheeks and forehead, carefully cutting larger areas into smaller pieces to remove these sections more easily. The final sections to remove or shade are the neck, collar, and shoulders.
Hints: 1. It is easier to carve portraits on larger pumpkins.
2. A sturdy U-shaped wood gouge is the perfect tool to shave layers out of the pumpkin’sthick shell.
3. For shaded areas, the deeper you shave into the pumpkin, the more light will shine through. Adjusting the amount of pumpkin flesh you remove will change the shadows of the carved face. Shave in more deeply for the highlights (shown as a medium gray on your pattern), and less so for deeper shadows (darker gray areas).
4. Remember, portraits usually have a lot of thinly cut areas, so they will deteriorate much more quickly than an average carving. Wait to carve portraits until the day you want to show them off. Give your finished carving a spray of water using a spray bottle to keep the finer lines from drying out too quickly!
1. Use a poking tool or sharp nail to poke the design into your pumpkin’s surface. Because this design has a lot of detail, just barely poke into the surface of the pumpkin, making sure that each poked dot is right beside the next. When all lines have been traced this way, removeyour paper pattern and rub flour into the pattern holes. This will make the design easier to follow.
2. Next, use a utility knife, like a small X-acto blade, to precisely trace each poked line, onlycutting into the surface about an eigth to one quarter of an inch deep. Tracing it with your bladewill give your portrait sharper lines and will greatly help you cleanly shave out the shaded areas.
