Hi Club Members and Readers……
Well this is the last “spot” for the year. This means that the holiday period is upon us so we
can spend time with who or what means most to us – So I’ll be in the shed working on my project!
Whoo hoo….
We have had some excellent events and meet’s this year. My favourite was Day of the Volkswagen this
time, with the Munster Gig a close second (that is on again in March). The Day of the Volkswagen has
lots of planning and the anticipation in the weeks leading up to it has been nerve racking in the past.
But this year with so many people doing their bit and contributing made it a smooth process, although I
nearly forgot to pick up the key for gates to the field! That would have been a nightmare! We have al-
ready had so many positive comments and good feedback – thank you.
As a UK expat I find it hard to get into the festivities as it is
summer! It still confuses me to see Christmas lights and deco-
rations out with the sun shining and the hot weather? In the
UK it is common to be gifted a “Christmas jumper” usually a
woolly affair and not very flattering in design. I came across
this while Google searching “Volkswagen Christmas” looking
for a picture to include.
The calendar for 2015 is quickly filling up. On that note – have
you seen or even better – bought the club calendar? It’s not
too late to buy one for yourself or a VW nut for Christmas.
Thank you for your support.
On behalf of the committee, be safe on the roads enjoy your time with your family and friends or your
time in the shed have a lovely Christmas and New Year!!!

Tempo Tempo
MatadorMatador By Craig Pickering
Craig Pickering had the Tempo
Matador on display at the
2014 Day of the Volkswagen.
Only non VW vehicle to use VW
engine and gearbox under li-
cence from VW.
First front wheel drive, front
engine truck ever made.
After WW2 there was a need for
cheap delivery vehicle, fuel was
scarce and expensive.
Tempo approached VW which
were only making relatively small
numbers of split beetles at the
time and requested the use of the
engine and gearbox, given the
fuel efficiency and compact design
it was perfect for the job
(although potentially a little un-
derpowered)
Tempo had made 3 wheelers since
the late 20s and had made a few
larger trucks and even a twin en-
gine two stroke 4wd vehicle
(G1200) and a 3 wheeled schwim-
mer for the German army, which
they didn't take on in .
The Matador 50 started produc-
tion in 1949 powered by the 25hp
VW motor and initially using the
25hp VW crash box.
The VW gearboxes were appar-
ently too highly geared for the 1
tonne carrying capacity. they
claimed a top speed of 82kph the
VW gearboxes failed under ex-
treme use, so Tempo approached
ZF who designed and built a gear-
box for the Matador that was up
to the task.
These seem to have been stocked
as an exchange item as we have
identified a couple of unused ZF
gearboxes in old caches of Mata-
dor parts.
December 2014 Via West Page 26
Volkswagen Club of Western Australia (Inc) since 1955 ...2015 celebrating 60 Years!
In 1952 VW had a meeting that ap-
parently questioned the idea of selling
Tempo motors when the kombi had
been released. I had also heard that
Tempo said that the Matador would
primarily sell as a ute. Tempo had
however offered any custom combi-
nation you wanted including an 11
seater bus. VW spontaneously pulled
the engine supply.
My Tempo is a cab chassis that was
delivered to Melbourne, It had a large
box made for it by a coachworks in
Melbourne that housed a portable x-
ray unit. It travelled around Victoria
taking X-rays for the tuberculosis
screening unit.
It was parked up at a family friends
farm by a Doctor and rarely run.
It was last registered in 1987.
I came across it in 2008 after the
owner had passed away.
I've spent the last 6 years dismantling
it and rebuilding it.
It now has it's original VW crash box
and a 36hp Okrasa motor. It has been
painted in Squirrel grey and has a Jar-
rah tray, as would Western Australian
delivered Matadors.
The original 25hp motor is in pieces
and ready for a rebuild.
this is how i first saw the tempo...a photo my mum had emailed me when
my uncle had mentioned it to her
after it made it to Dwellingup on a truck I started dismantling it...and it all went from there!

Volkswagen triumph in
Car of the
Year Awards Volkswagen has dominated
the inaugural carsales.com.au
Car of the Year Awards claim-
ing victory across three cate-
gories for the Polo, Golf and
Amarok.
The Polo was named Best City
Car, thanks to its great value for
money, benchmark fuel economy
and enhanced assistance systems
in the newly revised model.
Managing editor at carsales.com
Ltd, Marton Pettendy highlighted
the benefits of the Polo’s recent
update: “Volkswagen's smallest
model in Australia was our top
city-car pick even before the
comprehensively facelifted ver-
sion brought more big-car safety
and connectivity features in Au-
gust.”
Adding to already impressive lists
of accolades, the Golf succeeded
in the all-important Best Family
Car under $30K category, and
the Amarok was named the Best
Tradie vehicle.
On the Golf’s win, news editor,
Ken Gratton’s summary said:
“Golf is consistently holding its
value better than its rivals in the
small-car segment, and even one
of its prime competitors admits
the VW's running costs place it
on the podium.”
Volkswagen’s Amarok was ac-
cording to RV editor, Chris Fin-
cham: “The supremely refined
ride is complemented by a quality
finish both inside and out, while
the total cost of ownership repre-
sents real value given the fea-
tures and function on offer. It's
no wonder Volkswagen's 'tradie
in a tuxedo' is finding favour
across the nation.”
The awards take into considera-
tion factors including cost to run,
retained value, consumer en-
gagement and affordability in de-
termining the winners of the 13
category awards.

Three more trophies for Volkswagen
at the 2014
Australia’s Best Car
Awards Volkswagen has collected three
highly valued trophies at the Aus-
tralia’s Best Car Awards. Earlier
today the Golf 90TSI Comfortline
collected the award for small cars
priced under $35,000 while the
Golf GTI took out the ‘Best
Sports Car under $50,000’ for
the second year in a row. The
formidable Touareg also once
again collected a trophy, making
it four in a row for our premium
SUV.
Volkswagen Group Australia’s
Managing Director, John White,
was extremely pleased with the
company’s success: “It is without
doubt a great honour to receive
these accolades for our multi-
award-winning products.”
“The Golf has been such a great
success both here and around the
world, we only wish we could se-
cure more vehicles to meet the
demand.
“Our Touareg continues to deliver
year after year and we are very
pleased the judges agree that it
remains the benchmark in its
class,” said Mr White.
Reflecting on the Golf’s win, the
Australia’s Best Cars judges laud-
ed the Golf’s impressive package,
stating: “Almost sports-like in
performance, Volkswagen’s at-
tention to detail gives the Golf
90TSI Comfortline a number of
firsts.”
The judges also hailed the Golf
GTI as “the quintessential all-
rounder”, adding: “One of the
nicest aspects of
this sports car is
that it has no
unwanted traits;
it rides well on
all surfaces and
is enjoyable for
day-to-day com-
muting and
touring.”
For a fourth year
in a row, Aus-
tralia’s Best Cars
picked
Volkswagen’s
Touareg over its
competition, saying: “Having
been successful in Australia’s
Best Cars in 2013, the
Volkswagen Touareg was again in
a strong position this year, but it
also faced some new challenges.
“…the winning vehicle had to
combine superlative luxury with
excellent abilities both on and off
road, and all for a reasonable
price. The Volkswagen Touareg
V6 TDI did just that.”
Australia’s Best Car Awards plac-
es the country’s most popular
vehicles through rigorous testing
and analysis to determine the
best vehicles on offer for con-
sumers. It is the nation’s most
comprehensive and independent
customer-focused vehicle testing
and awards program.

winner. It’s just the right size,
has plenty of standard features,
great looks and really is a car for
just about all Australian car buy-
ers.”
He also noted the accessibility of
the Golf for buyers: “The Golf
range also provides a premium
European feel with still very rea-
sonable and realistic pricing.”

...named Hot
Hatch Hero at Scottish
COTY The most powerful production
Volkswagen Golf, the Golf R, has
been named Hot Hatch of the Year
in the 2014 Scottish Car of the
Year awards. The award was pre-
sented at a ceremony held at St.
Andrews on Friday 28th Novem-
ber.
The awards are judged by all 15
members of the Association of
Scottish Motoring Writers, who
represent publications and web-
sites from across the country.
Commenting on the win, President
of the Association of Scottish Mo-
toring Writers, Alisdair Suttie,
said: “Quick off the mark and with
the grip and finesse to handle its
power, the Volkswagen Golf R sets
a new benchmark in affordable,
practical performance motoring.
Perfect poise from its standard
four-wheel drive allied to precise
steering and a hefty punch from
its 2.0-litre turbo engine means it
is the hot hatch for all seasons
and all reasons.”
Director of Volkswagen UK, Alex
Smith, said: “The Golf was
crowned overall Scottish Car of
the Year in 2013, so I’m delight-
ed that the R is continuing the
success of the range and has
been awarded the Hot Hatch ac-
colade. This car competes in a
hotly contested class, but it’s the
blend of performance and practi-
cality allied with comfort and val-
ue for money which gives it a
unique edge over its competitors.
Thanks go to the Association of
Scottish Motoring Writers for rec-
ognising these qualities.”

TopGear Magazine
Hot Hatch Award
The Volkswagen Golf R, the most
powerful Golf on sale, has won a
prestigious UK TopGear Magazine
award, Hot Hatch of the Year
2014.
Commenting on the award, Ollie
Marriage, Motoring Editor of Top-
Gear Magazine stated: ‘VW has
taken the already excellent GTI
and left no stone unturned in its
pursuit of improvement.’
Marriage added: ‘It is the car that
can do everything – 40 mpg cruis-
er, upmarket business chariot,
winter weapon…genuine thrill pro-
vider. … Congratulations VW – the
result of your efforts is the best
hot hatch on sale today.’
This award is the icing on the cake
for the Golf R as it has also been
named top in Autocar’s Britain’s
Top 50 Cars of 2014 and picked
up the hot hatch award in last
week’s 2014 Scottish Car of the
Year Awards.
...is Drive's
COTY in the Under $60k
Performance category
The accolades keep coming for
VW’s pinnacle Golf model, the fire-
breathing 206kW Golf R DSG,
claiming victory in Drive’s Car of
the Year awards in the Under $60k
Performance category.
The Golf R impressed Drive’s judg-
es above all others in a diverse
range of category competitors,
with its extensive list of standard
technical and comfort features and
blistering performance.
Volkswagen Group Australia Man-
aging Director, John White, lauded
the Golf R’s win: “Australians love
their performance cars, and I am
extremely pleased that the Golf R
has been recognised as the cate-
gory’s best by Drive’s expert panel
of judges.”
Drive’s judges applauded the hot
Golf, stating: “While the perfor-
mance category lends to having
an inherent focus on going fast,
which the Golf R offers in spades,
it also does an equally commenda-
ble job of trundling down to the
shops to buy milk – something
none of its competitors are yet to
master to the same degree.
According to the judges, “in the
latest generation of sportscar, it
seems enthusiasts can have their
cake and eat it too.”
Drive’s COTY awards recognises
the year’s best vehicles in 13 cat-
egories, assessing 42 vehicles
over 20,000 kilometres of testing
at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park.

A round

ends its record-
breaking
WRC season
with yet
another win
in Wales Eighth victory of the season
for world champions*
Sébastien Ogier/Julien In-
grassia
Record number of wins in
one WRC season for
Volkswagen
Latvala and Mikkelsen re-
cover well from set-backs
The icing on the cake at the end
of the season – the final round of
the FIA World Rally Championship
(WRC) saw Volkswagen set a new
record for the number of wins in
one single season. Win number
eight of the year for newly-
crowned World Rally Champions*
Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia
(F/F) presented the Wolfsburg-
based manufacturer with its
twelfth victory from 13 rallies.
Ogier/Ingrassia raced into a com-
manding lead of over a minute on
day one of three in Wales, and
were then able to pace them-
selves intelligently on Saturday
and Sunday. Jari-Matti Latvala/
Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) ended
the Rally Great Britain in eighth
place, having lost more than
three minutes after a mistake on
Saturday morning. The extremely
difficult conditions in Wales also
took their toll on the third
Volkswagen due of Andreas Mik-
kelsen/Ola Fløene (N/N): they
had offs resulting in early retire-
ments on both Friday and Sun-
day. However, their fightback on
Saturday was emphatic proof of
what might have been, consisting
as it did of five stage wins and
four second places in nine stages.
A superlative season in figures
The final round of the year also
brought the curtain down on what
has been a fairy-tale season for
Volkswagen. A series of records
went to the Wolfsburg-based
manufacturer in 2014. The
twelfth of a possible 13 wins saw
Volkswagen eclipse the previous
record of eleven, held by Citroën.
Volkswagen also equalled the rec-
ord eight one-twos in a season,
set by Peugeot back in 2002. And
there’s more: Volkswagen also
wrapped up the title in the Manu-
facturers’ Championship at the
earliest point of the season for 25
years, as well as becoming only
the second manufacturer in WRC
history to provide all of the top
three drivers in the Drivers’ World
Championship. Only Lancia had
achieved this feat before them –
in 1987 and 1988. Not only were
Volkswagen’s achievements im-
pressive, but also the manner in
which they were achieved: in
2014, Ogier, Latvala and Mikkel-
sen added a further 197 of a pos-
sible 249 stage wins to the suc-
cess story of the Polo R WRC. In
total, 23 podiums went to
Volkswagen over the course of
the season’s 13 rallies. Since the
Polo R WRC made its World Rally
Championship debut in January
2013, the powerhouse has racked
up 22 victories and 41 podiums in
26 rallies. The Volkswagen driv-
ers clocked the fastest time on
345 of the 486 special stages
over the last two seasons.

XXL mud pack: extremely dif-
ficult conditions in Wales
The Rally Great Britain is not only
the “Rally of Legends”, but is a
legend in its own right. The ubiq-
uitous rain and menacing fog
hanging over the forests make for
perilous Welsh gravel stages, the
likes of which are not experienced
anywhere else on the WRC calen-
dar. Smooth in places, mostly
muddy, but always slippery, the
70th staging of this classic once
again posed an extreme challenge
to driver, co-driver and World
Rally Car alike.
Disappointment for Jari-Matti
Latvala and Miikka Anttila
About halfway into the 305.64
kilometres against the clock, a
mere 6.6 seconds separated the
world champion* and the man
who finished runner-up* in the
World Championship – the rally in
Wales was initially shaped by the
same duel that had dominated
the 2014 WRC season. The battle
between Ogier and Latvala pro-
duced no fewer than three of the
ten closest WRC finishes in World
Championship history, with a
fourth only prevented by a slight
mistake. Jari-Matti Latvala and
Miikka Anttila fell victim to the
perilous Welsh mud on Saturday
morning, sliding into a ditch on
the ninth stage of the rally – and
lost over three minutes in the
process. They fought back strong-
ly on Sunday, however, winning
four of the final day’s six special
stages – including the closing
Power Stage – to climb from tenth
to eighth place.
Highs and lows: set-backs and
stage wins for Mikkelsen and
Fløene
The rally was to prove an emo-
tional rollercoaster for Andreas
Mikkelsen and Ola Fløene. Five
stage wins and four second places
on Saturday were unfortunately
offset by crashes on Friday and
Sunday. Mikkelsen and Fløene
were always one of the cars first
onto the route – no easy task at
the Rally Great Britain. As such, a
dream season ended in disap-
pointment for Mikkelsen/Fløene.
However, this does not detract
from an otherwise impressive rec-
ord: Andreas Mikkelsen made five
appearances on the podium in
2014, including second places on
three different surfaces: ice and
snow (Sweden), gravel (Poland)
and asphalt (France).
Power Stage: bonus points for
Latvala
Volkswagen continues to domi-
nate the Power Stage, in which
extra points towards the Drivers’
and Co-Drivers’ Championship are
awarded to the fastest three cars.
For the eleventh time in the 2014
season the fastest time was set
by a Volkswagen driver. In Great
Britain it was the turn of Jari-
Matti Latvala to pick up the three
bonus points. A Volkswagen driv-
er has picked up at least one ex-
tra point on 24 occasions this
year. Volkswagen can point to a
proud record since joining the

championship in 2013: of the 25
Power Stages held in that time,
the fastest man was at the wheel
of a Polo R WRC on 19 occasions,
while the Volkswagen drivers fin-
ished in the top three 44 times.
Three titles*, twelve wins –
the conclusion of a demanding
season
The Volkswagen team can look
back on what was not only a suc-
cessful, but also a demanding
season, with the three World
Championship titles* in the Driv-
ers’, Co-drivers’ and Manufactur-
ers’ competitions as a reward. The
2014 FIA World Rally Champion-
ship took team members from 20
nations to 13 rallies in 15 different
countries. 4.2 million fans now
follow the works team from Wolfs-
burg on social networks, 101,647
fans were delighted to get their
hands on signed autographs of the
Volkswagen drivers, while journal-
ists were supplied with infor-
mation via 703 pages of press re-
leases and 322,488 text messag-
es.
In extreme conditions, from sea
level up to altitudes of 2781 me-
tres, the temperatures on the spe-
cial stages ranged from minus 12
to plus 34 degrees Celsius. The
turbo chargers in the three 315-
hp engines completed 1.3 billion
revs between the Rally Monte Car-
lo and the Rally Great Britain.
Sébastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala
and Andreas Mikkelsen changed
gears in their Polo R WRCs 73,211
times. Using muscle power alone,
the mechanics lifted a total of 265
tons moving the roughly 1,100
tyres used. The engineers evalu-
ated about 17.9 gigabytes of data
from the year's 249 special stages
– roughly the same as 3.2 million
pages of pure text. The team
members covered a total of
96,845.99 kilometres as the crow
flies between the service parks
and the team HQ in Hannover.
The equipment for the overseas
races travelled a further
46,202.62 kilometres by sea.
All with 100 percent team
work.
Quotes after day three of the
Rally Great Britain
Sébastien Ogier, Volkswagen
Polo R WRC #1
“That is obviously the best way to
end a season: with a win. We
were under no pressure, as the
World Championship was no long-
er at stake, and just wanted to
enjoy the Rally Great Britain. We
really had to go flat-out on Friday
and had a close battle for the lead
with my team-mate Jari-Matti Lat-
vala. That allowed us to open up a
big lead over the rest of our ri-
vals. When Jari-Matti made a mis-
take on Saturday, it obviously
completely changed the character
of the rally for us. I just had to
get the car to the finish line. How-
ever, that is anything but easy
given the typical conditions here
in Wales. All in all, it has been an-
other magnificent season for Ju-
lien and me, with a fantastic team

behind us. We now have a few
tests and official parties before
the Christmas holidays begin. A
quick word on Mikko Hirvonen: I
am delighted for him that he end-
ed his final WRC rally on the podi-
um. He has had a great career,
and we will miss driving against
him.”
Jari-Matti Latvala, Volkswagen
Polo R WRC #2
“I can look back with great satis-
faction on the 2014 season: I
mounted my first serious chal-
lenge for the World Championship
title, and kept the title race alive
for a long time. I also won my
first rally on asphalt, which was
an important milestone for me.
The duel with Sébastien Ogier was
extremely exciting. I will carry on
where I left off next season. The
Rally Great Britain did not pan out
as I had hoped. My goal was defi-
nitely to go for the win here in
Wales. Apart from the slip-up, our
pace was good. As such, I am al-
ready looking forward to next
year.”
Andreas Mikkelsen,
Volkswagen Polo R WRC #9
“Unfortunately that was not the
end to the season I had hoped for.
I would have liked to have given
the team something better than
two offs. However, the conditions
were particularly difficult and mis-
takes happen quicker at the Rally
Great Britain than anywhere else.
I am disappointed, but I believe
we matched the pace of our team-
mates and could have challenged
for the win. Despite this disap-
pointment, we can still be proud
of what we have achieved this
season. With five podiums we
have exceeded our own expecta-
tions. Third place in the Drivers’
Championship is the best result of
my career. I am looking forward
to a bit of a rest over the coming
weeks, but also to the 2015 sea-
son. We are determined to be
challenging for victories and podi-
ums right from the word go. That
is my goal.”
Jost Capito, Volkswagen
Motorsport Director
“Twelve wins in one season – we
really can look back on a success-
ful year. We can be proud of what
we have achieved, and enjoy eve-
ry moment in the World Rally
Championship. The Rally Great
Britain has also been a great suc-
cess, and Sébastien Ogier and Ju-
lien Ingrassia did everything right
en route to their eighth win of the
season. Respect to them. In con-
trast, Jari-Matti Latvala, Miikka
Anttila, Andreas Mikkelsen and
Ola Fløene did not end the season
the way they had hoped. Howev-
er, they can also be proud of what
they have achieved. There is no
chance of us resting on our lau-
rels. The 2015 season gets under-
way with the Rally Monte Carlo in
just 65 days, and we want to be
as well prepared as possible
again. Preparations have already
been in full swing for a while
now.”
