Phare Ponleu Selpak - - -
P hare Ponleu Selpak which means "the brightness of the arts", began li fe in 1986 in the Site 2 refugee camp on the Thai-Cambodian border. A group of 9 children who took part in drawing workshops in the camp had the idea to form a creative association to help other children express the trauma of war. Following repatriation, PPS was founded in Battambang in 1994 by Srey Bandaul, Tor Vutha, Khuon Det, Lon Lor, Chea Yoa, Svay Sareth, Chan Vuttouk, Dy Mala and Rin Nak together with their French drawing teacher, Véronique Decrop.
PPS is an association, which supports community development through providing children, young adults and their families with social, educational, emotional and cultural support.
PPS's work with children is driven by the acknowledgement of each child's individuality and need for specifically tailored support. Artistic practice and development is at the heart of the formai education, life and social skills offered to the young people we work with. Alongside a governmentally run public school for about 900 children, the PPS campus comprises: Arts schools (Visual Arts with Fine Arts and Image and Design Arts School; Performing Arts with Music School, Theatre School, and the internationally renowned Circus School), Social Support (Social Services and a Child Protection Unit) and Education (a library, a child development center, a public school and a future Kindergarten). ....

P hare Ponleu Selpak (PPS), with the support of French co-funding partners AFD and CCFD, is creating a new Applied Arts School in Battambang (Cambodia).
lt will simultaneously develop Phare's existing Visual Arts School (fine arts) and provide students with professional training in graphie design, visual arts and animation, facilitating access to employment opportunities in Cambodia's growing field of visual arts.
The school specifically targets young people from disadvantaged backgrounds who display an aptitude for drawing and participated in leisure or preparatory sections at Phare. Tuition is free of charge, support technical equipment is provided and students have the opportunity to subscribe to collage credit.

D rawing has always been a powerful tool, until now, on my path of lite and the Phare Visual Arts School history. My first experience in the refugee's camps in 1981 was to use a stick of wood on the earth floor for drawing Buddhist images. Later it was scenes from Chinese movies, performed once a month in the camp, before 1 could get my first class with Veronique Descrop, based on a step-by-step observation of our world. "Draw what you see!" as she used to say.

Back to Battambang, the main purpose of Phare Ponleu Selpak was to use drawing as a tool to support children who faced difficult social issues. Alongside my persona! artistic development, we opened the school and since the first class (20 years aga today!) , there have been thousands of children who came to learn drawing, and almost 120 who gained employment in graphie design for companies, NGO or as independent professionals. Today the young people have more choices when it cames to developing a professional career. lt is now important to adapt the curriculum of our school, so as to provide actual applied art job opportunities. We want to provide to the students a complete set of skills with strong fundamental and cultural knowledge about arts, and capabilities to understand, analyze and respond to a problem given, with creativity and adequate answers. We have become a big family, like a drawing artist family, and 1 really hope the future for the next coming generation will be bright!

W hen 1 first attended drawing classes with Veronique Descrop in the refugee camps of site 2 in Thailand, she asked me: "what do you want to do?" 1 answered that 1 wanted to draw. Then, with some basic tools my first drawings were created surrounded by the civil war. When we came back to Battambang, the main purpose of starting a drawing school was to share and talk about trauma with the disadvantaged children. This is social work through culture and education. 1 really started to understand Cambodia at this ti me, and to know thal 1
wanted to develop my artistic skills and knowledge. lt was in 2001 , alter having tried different paths, that 1 got completely involved within teaching at PPS in arder to share my experiences. lt is very hard to be an independent artist today.

What? The workshop is a place of discovery, learning and exploring ways of expression in art, access to the drawing, painting, volume and general culture of the visual arts.
Who? The workshop can accommodate a large variety of audiences, regardless of age or level.
How? The educational structure allows the acquisition of basic, on severa! progressive levels of content and technical requirements, and an opening to the general culture of visual arts. The workshop opens 2 sections for children (7-12 years old & adults 13+) During the year, a collective work is carried out (frescoes) and severa! !hematie workshops are spread to create a dynamic of workflow. The leisure class provides pleasure but also allows detection for potential students who wish to engage in the upper course of the school or who are loo king for space for persona! research and professional advices from the teacher's team. The students will lake part in the public exhibition organized during the opening day.

What? The preparatory class "prepare" the students for the profesional teaching of 3 years in visual and applied arts. The common core teaching allows students to acquire ali the necessary fundamentals in observation drawing, analysis, perspective drawing, color theory, literature review, illustration, artistic expression, visual arts culture and english basis knowledge. The student will get ali the tools necessary for the entrance to the superior classes (limited places).
Who? The preparatory class is available from the age of 17 years old; persona! interview (orientation).
How? The schedule presents a part-time class {13 hours per week, available both during the morning and the afternoon), and provides an opportunity for those who complete their secondary education (certificate/bac) or must complete a job transition. The preparation can be completed in two years.

What? The year 1 is a gateway to specialisation (year 2 and year 3). This is a real lime processing of the students who will confirm and explore their potential to orient themselves for the rest of their education and professional future . During this year they may acquire the methodology and practice of applied arts and develop their original personalities.

Who? This will be primarily for students from Battambang who have followed the preparatory classes:

The entrance examination consists of : • Drawing test • Artistic expression (subject given) • Redaction writing (image analysis)
How? The courses are organized on the basis of a common core, which occupies half of the total hourly volume. The second half is dedicated to the discovery and teaching of applied art disciplines (graphies and animation) and artistic expression. The remaining time slots are free for students, dedicated to research , study and practical work. Regular workshops are organized and conducted by external professionals artists & technicians. The evaluation work will be continuous, and class council will be held quarterly. At the end of the year ali the work will be presented during the opening days to the public and a special jury (leachers + gues! artists). The student must justify his choice of specialty for higher education in year 2 and year 3.

ProfessionnaJ.
Year2 The year 2 focuses on the technical and methodological professionalization of the chosen specialty in Graphies, Animation or Visual arts. Parallel to the common core, !hematie and optional workshops are offered (Masterclass and free subject workshop).
Internship Between year 2 & 3, the student must complete a professional internship of 2 months with one of the partnerships to the school ( 1 OOhands animation studio, Sonleukthmey graphie studio, Romeet galery, Armada studio, Xi/am animation ... )
Year3 The year 3 sees the volume of common core reduced to get more specialized and to locus on the persona! project, which will be submitted to a jury of professionals. A portfolio is created and published online on the public website of the school, and individual interviews proceed to prepare the employment after graduation.

Main activities
• Graphie arts. The mass balance, black and white, and the importance of colored plastic and stains. Practice symbiosis typography 1 image. Design and implementation.
· Design entries. Manage the principles of the construction of a write. (proportions, rhythms and tensions of a system of signs and abstract shapes.)
· Typography and layout. The letter and its design (script, calligraphy, typography) concept of semiotics, word, phrase, the message composition.

Objectives l!c main activities
Visual arts produce artistic abjects essentially seen by the eye of the beholder. The VAAS program offers specialized classes exploring different aspects of the medium:
· Image: Drawing, painting, photography, video. · Object: Volume, sculpture, abject design. · Space: Scenography, installation, events.
The program explores ali the dimensions of the image and interviews a visual culture in perspective with ils more contemporary manifestations. Sources of production, circulation and creating images are becoming more complex and diverse, giving them an increasing role across multiple networks, writings and meanings, in whichever way they are used for artistic, communication or economie purpose.
ln order to better follow the many adventures of the images, from the ir conceptualisation to their production & their dissemination, it is appropriate to address the visual arts in a non-segmented way. Thus the visual art program offers a complete panel of technical skills, a solid cultural knowledge and helps to develop the critical & creative point of view of the student, linked with the professional expectations.
ln the coming years, VAAS expects to develop further ils classes tully linked with the performing arts school of PPS.
· Scenography (circus and theatre/ performing arts productions). · Design object (art and craft, recycled design product, furniture design ... ).

• The team is responsible for the professional delivery of the technical trainings and participates in the development of the training curricula under the direction of the pedagogie head management.
• Ali the teachers benefit from the technical , pedagogie support of the short-lerm experts (Graphie design, animation, history of arts, foreign languages).
• Young professionals from 1 OOOhands and Sonleuk Thmey studios are actually being trained at Pivaut School and MJM in France and will join the project later in 2014 and 2015.

1 know PPS through my neighbortlood. 1 started to leam how to draw on my first day at PPS. 1 joined Sonleuk Th mey in 2009. We are now in a new project invoMng the graphie design school and animation studio. 1 hope that 1 have the capacity to share ali my experiences and knowledge with the students of the next generation to improve their skills, to build their self-confidence and to give them the opportunity to find good jobs.

1 started taking drawing lessons at PPS in 2005 and finished in 201 O. 1 continued my studies in graphie design at BIT school. 1 returned to PPS and worked and trained at Sonleuk Thmey. 1 am becoming a teacher and 1 want to pass on ali my knowledge gained from my teachers to my students.

1 started at PPS in 2003 and became a part of the animation studio in 2007. We are becoming leachers of the new Visual and Applied Arts School. We would like to leach and pass on our knowledge to students of the next generation, to improve their skills, to enrich and expand the graphie design and animation field towards international standards.

1 know PPS since 2004. 1 started working in animat ion as an animator assistant alter my 4 years of drawing classes. Now, 1 am a studio employee working as a flash animator and 1 am involved in teaching ali my knowledge to the students.

1 know PPS since 2004 through my sister. At first 1 only wanted to learn a simple thing, but later on 1 became really interested in it. 1 work for the animation studio and 1 specialize on flash animation. 1 wou ld like to share my experience and technics knowledge with students.

1 learnt drawing for 4 years, and then started working at 1 OOOhands animation studio for Iwo years. 1 would like to share my experience working on the different projects of animation movies within the studio.

1 know PPS since 2001. Studying at a private school was loo expansive and PPS was the only structure to provide drawing & painting trainings for free. Alter 3 years of learning 1 became a volunteer teacher. Our aim is to schedule and prepare !essons in arder to bring students further in their professional lives.
Sou Sophy Khmer art 1 Co!or Since 1 was a child, 1 have always been sensitive to artistic things, and my father encouraged me to attend the class at PPS in 2004. 6 years later, 1 had the opportunity to star! and later complete my skills by teaching traditional painting. The new curriculum will make il easier to follow the progress of our students and bring them to where we expect them to be for the ir future as professionals.

1 started learning at PPS in 1996 and became an active and independant artist in 2005. 1 try to pass the best of my skills on to the students. With the new curriculum we will locus more on pedagogie techniques, research and preparing lessons. This is more challenging but also more exciting for the future of our students.

Sonleuk Thmey, which means "new page", is PPS's graphie design, ülustration studio and publishing house. Created in January 2009, Sonleuk Thmey is a professional depart· ment. The young graphie artists are former students from the fines arts sdlool work on commissions and eam their IMng this way. Specialist staff and foreign volunteers at Phare Ponleu Selpak supervise and support their work, guaranteeing consistently high quality work for clients.

"1 000 Hands" was founded in 2007 und er the aegis of Phare Ponleu Selpak ation (PPS), with Poy Chunly & Koeurm Kolap as a vocational training center for students graduating from PPS Visual Arts School. ln 2007, "1 000 Hands" was granted an award by Cambofest (an international i pendent film festival in Cambodia) for ils first animated cartoon entitled "A little boy drinking bad water''. This award recognized it as the best animation film produced in Cambodia. Nowadays, "1 OOOHands" is known for its work and is considered one of the major developers and producers of animation content in Cambodia.
