Industrial WasteNote: Industries have waste which is also an output.
Three of the many types of waste are:
1. Green house gasses - ex. Carbon dioxide or methane, which
causes global warming & associated problems.
2. Acid Rain - ex. Sulphur & nitrogen, which decreases soil fertility, kills fish, or corrodes buildings.
3. CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) - ex. Refrigerants & sprays, which breaks down the ozone that filters harmful UV rays causing cancer.

The Role of Government & Interest Groups
Business & Industry
• One goal = Profit!!• Save money, do it
cheaply as possible.• Little or No concern
over the environment!
![Page 7: Unit 5 Manufacturing & Environmental Issues Environmental Threats from Industries Pg. 237](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e445503460f94b37f20/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The Role of Government & Interest Groups
Interest groups• The “extremist”. • They raise valid
concerns • Argue them with
force & conviction.
• Ie. Greenpeace!!
![Page 8: Unit 5 Manufacturing & Environmental Issues Environmental Threats from Industries Pg. 237](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e445503460f94b37f20/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The Role of Government & Interest Groups
Government:•Balancing Act!!•Environmental concerns VS. encouraging economic development.
![Page 9: Unit 5 Manufacturing & Environmental Issues Environmental Threats from Industries Pg. 237](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e445503460f94b37f20/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Averting an environmental threat posed by an industry.
• Something to think about!!!! The volcanic ash from Iceland illustrates….
• Prevailing winds. The winds transport acid rain from industrialized areas and deposit it in elsewhere…
• Industrialization, hence, affects everyone..even the countries which are NOT industrialized.
• SOLUTIONS need cooperation and consultation between different nations, interest groups, business and governments.
EXAMPLE:
The recent Kyoto summit and the summit held in Rio de Janeiro several years ago attempted to get countries to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions.

The Acid Rain Problem: Solutions
![Page 11: Unit 5 Manufacturing & Environmental Issues Environmental Threats from Industries Pg. 237](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e445503460f94b37f20/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
• Government regulation to reduce sulphur & nitrogen emission & clean up damaged environment.
• Development of sulphur filtering equipment. (Smoke stacks)
• Tax breaks for companies if they reduce pollution output or use ALTERNATIVE energy sources
• Consultation between business, environmentalists and government to decide on a plan of action. (work together!)

Moral Issues and IndustryPg. 233
![Page 14: Unit 5 Manufacturing & Environmental Issues Environmental Threats from Industries Pg. 237](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e445503460f94b37f20/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
SOCIAL/MORAL ISSUES & MANUFACTURING
A Company’s responsibility:
• Child labour (Exploitation, Age, wages, safety, education & training )
• Safety of workers (safety gear, education/training, insurances and regulations)
• Environmentally friendly. (Pollution, contamination and protection of the environment).
![Page 15: Unit 5 Manufacturing & Environmental Issues Environmental Threats from Industries Pg. 237](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e445503460f94b37f20/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Social/moral issues associated with manufacturing
• In Canada and most well developed nations there are strict regulations about safety, waste emissions, age of workers, and corporate responsibility.
• In some developing nations the regulations might
NOT be in place or they may be decreased in hope of stimulating business instead of preventing it.
![Page 16: Unit 5 Manufacturing & Environmental Issues Environmental Threats from Industries Pg. 237](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e445503460f94b37f20/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
For EXAMPLE: Canadian Tire….
• Recognized as environmentally responsible.
• Corporate sponsor of Pollution Probe, Earth Week, and Healthy and Safety months.
• Provides a helping hand to families in crisis by ensuring their basic needs are met.
• Supports lunch programs for schools, soup kitchens, hostels for the homeless.

EXAMPLE: Canadian Tire JumpStart
• This program provides financially disadvantaged children in Canada, 5-18 years of age…
• with the opportunity to participate in sports and active recreational activities.
