GREENWAY PAVILION FALL 07
The Greenway Pavilion is located in downtown Boston along the Greenway; the surface of the Big Dig. The intention of this project was to create a connection between Quincy Market and the North End which are both very popular areas of the city.
An important consideration that needed to be made was the varying orientations of circulation paths directly adjacent to the site. Quincy Market ejects pedestrians horizontally while the entrance into Columbus Park is diagonal.

I allowed these conditions to articulate themselves into the site by creating courtyards that aligned with the adjacent circulation paths.
After the courtyards had been established, the re-mainder of the site was divided into geometric forms to house basic programatic requirements. A cafe, bookstore, bike shop, and information booth are each placed within their own form. Some of the program overlaps according to need such as the bookstore and cafe which share a check-out counter.

THE GRID
The site for the Northend Library is on the corner of Hanover Street and Tileston Street; the Northend of Boston. The intention of this project was to reactivate the end of this block as well as provide a public space for the storage and access of a unique collection of books about the History of this area.
An important consideration that needed to be made was the existing context of this area. The Northend has a very old history and many its buildings have helped to preserve its identity.

In response to the context, I chose a material palette that would not be unfamiliar. I also incorporated some modern elements in order to blend the past with the present.
The programing of this space, however, does not follow the standards of surrounding buildings. I allowed the programtic functions of an “ideal” library to defi ne the layout of the space. As such, this design works very well with the book stacks and circulation on the interior, providing ample reading space around the perimeter.

FACADE TYPES
READING ZONEBeginning at the fl oor, 2’-6” solid wall, 2’-6” window, 5’-0” window, and terminates back into solid wall. By doing this there is ample natural light entering the space which is primarily focused directly on the reading surfaces.
BOOK STACK
ZONEBeginning at the fl oor, 5’-0” solid wall, 5’-0” window, and terminates back into solid wall. By using this strategy light is able to enter the space, but the amound of that can enter is limited.

FACADE CONDITIONS
CONCRETEConcrete is used for areas of the facade that do not touch corners. The subdivisions were determined by the window mullion patterns.
BRICKBrick is used for subdivisions of the facade which extend into corners. This material is intended to function as a secondary material when compared to concrete.

The YMCA is located in downtown New Bedford adja-cent to the town hall. This project is intended to be an adaptive reuse. There is an existing parking garage on the site and no more than 30 percent of the structure can be removed.
New Bedford is an area with a rich history. It used to be the shipping capital of the world before it fell on hard economic times. For this project, I attempted to recon-nect the site with the urban fabric of its past. There are also main roads on either side, both vehicular and pedestrian, that needed to have access to the site.
I allowed these conditions to articulate themselves into the design by creating a public sequence across the site. After all of the appropriate considerations had been made, the result ended up being a 4 sided building with no rear side.
After establishing the context, I broke up the site into quadrants according to sizes that matched large program requirements. The program includes a theatre, cafe, daycare, classrooms, gymnasium, pools, and exercise area. A major and minor axis divided the space, while also defi ning circulation.

The Fire Station is located in the suburbs of Boston in the town of Newton. The intention of this project was to articulate signifi cant programmtic elements into individual forms which are spatially independent from one another but retain asethetic similarities.
The largest programmatic challenge was accomodating the apparatus bay which required specifi c demensions and needed to be easily accessible. I allowed these constraints to divide the remaining program into independent structures. These structures respond to
their context according to the appropriate site condi-tions. Eff ectively continuing a reoccuring theme from my other projects, these structures have no “rear” side.
The result of organzing the program into groups was three geometric forms. These forms are articulated as squares, but have been manipulated in diff erent ways to create unique objects that share a similar material palette. Being adjacent to Rt. 9 means the forms will be experienced mainly from the car and have been oriented in a way that optimizes views of the facades.
