PlaNYC
In 2007, then Mayor Bloomberg released PlaNYC—a
comprehensive guide for New York City that covered
everything from brownfields to housing, from water supply
to solid waste. It outlined a cutting edge sustainability
initiative for the quality of life for New Yorkers.
One City Built to Last
In April 2013, Mayor Bill De Blasio released a new plan for
2050. This update encompasses the new developments in
population, technology, and the economy.
Mayor De Blasio created the Office of Recovery and
Resiliency (ORR) in March 2014, the first City agency in
the country dedicated solely to resiliency.
ORR is implementing the strategies laid out in PlaNYC,
which includes 257 initiatives to make the city, its
communities, and its infrastructure more resilient.
One City Built to Last
We are also committed to
reducing the Greenhouse Gas
(GHG) emissions. In line with
the UN target, we have put New
York City on a pathway to
achieve an 80% reduction in
GHG emissions from 2005
levels by 2050.
Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The initial goal of PlaNYC of reducing greenhouse gas
emissions 30% by 2030, was revised under Mayor De Blasio to
80% by 2050. This is in line with goals set by both the State of
New York and President Obama.
Demonstrating the revised GHG reductions, New York City has
already reduced citywide emissions by 19 percent from 2005
levels.
❖ 80% of these reductions came from switching from coal and
oil to natural gas
Buildings
In NYC, buildings produce 75% of the
greenhouse gas emissions.
The largest buildings, over 50,000 square feet,
produce 45% of the GHG. Though only 2% of
our buildings are that large.
Greater Greener Buildings Plan (GGBP)
In 2009, NYC implemented multiple laws under
the GGBP umbrella.
❖ Annual benchmarks for energy and water
usage
❖ Energy audits
❖Retrocommission once per decade for
each large building
Promote Innovative Solutions
❖ New York City Housing Authority
(NYCHA) Housing➢ 400,000 residents spread throughout
2,563 buildings
❖ Low-cost, standardized retrofit
packages for small buildings ➢ retrofitting just half of the City’s
650,000 small homes could save
$255 million per year in energy
costs
❖ Energy conservation training
