“I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit La Biennale de Montréal in 2014 - I had not visited the city or the Biennale before, and it was an extremely rewarding and stimulating visit. The Biennale itself was a strong presentation of international and Québécois artists, some familiar, some new to me. I also enjoyed the opportunity to encounter Ighby and Lemmens, a collaborative Québécois practice whose work I had not encountered before. Beyond the Biennale itself, Montreal has a vibrant contemporary art scene, and we were delighted to collaborate with Battat Contemporary to bring Julie Favreau’s new work to the festival in 2015.”

“Visiting Les Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois was an ideal way of getting to know the Québécois film scene first hand, and to screen both finished films and works-in-progress. From the perspective of CPH PIX, the festival showcase was great for spotting new talent, both films and other audiovisual art forms that Montreal has to offer.”

Bonjour,
Welcome to the autumn edition of Québec Culture.
With all the excitement of the Edinburgh festivals behind us, we now turn our attention to an array of festivals taking place in Québec over the coming months, which we hope many of you will be able to attend.

abroad. It offers an invaluable opportunity to spot the best of Québec talent across the performing arts over the course of one week.
Other dates to look out for in Montreal this autumn include:
Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (Film) : 5 – 16 October 2016
Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montréal (Documentaries) : 10 – 20 November 2016
La Biennale de Montréal (Visual arts) : 19 October 2016 – 15 January 2017
Les Coups de Théâtre (Young audiences) : 13 – 20 November 2016
Mundial Montreal (World music) : 15 – 18 November 2016
M for Montreal (Indie Rock showcase) : 16 – 19 November 2016
Salon du Livre de Montréal (Literature) : 16 – 21 November 2016

ISPA is a global network of more than 450 leaders in the performing arts with representation from more than 185 cities and all regions of the globe. (ispa.org)
If you would like to find out more about these, or any other, Québec festivals, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our cultural team. We look forward to welcoming you to performances by Québec artists taking place near you and in Québec this autumn.

BARBU
Cirque AlfonseUntil 25 SeptemberLondon Wonderground Spiegeltent, SouthbankLondon, UK
To critical acclaim and audience delight, BARBU continues its 15-week run at Underbelly’s London
Wonderground. Packed with astonishing acrobatics and perfectly-groomed beards, this is cabaret but not as you know it. Performed by one of the world’s most iconoclastic circus companies, Québec’s Cirque Alfonse (the troupe behind 2013’s madcap lumberjack circus Timber!), this is a spectacularly raucous and sexy circus that takes edge-of-your-seat, off-the-wall entertainment to a whole other level. Set to a heart-thumping score, circus and mayhem collide to wow you in this adventure of almighty skills and muscly torsos. cirquealfonse.com | londonwonderground.co.uk

Thérèse and Pierrette at Holy Angels
Michel Tremblay
27 SeptemberTraverse TheatreEdinburgh, UK
Stellar Quines Theatre Company presents a new work-in-progress: Molly Innes’ translation into Scots of Serge Denoncourt’s adaptation of Thérèse and Pierrette at Holy Angels, a story by renowned Québec writer Michel Tremblay. The performance will take place in the 27th Rehearsal Room, a space where new scripts and writers are presented to a live audience for the first time.
Thérèse and Pierrette at Holy Angels is a play about friendship and truth, set in a Québec convent school in the 1940s. The three girls, Thérèse, Pierrette and Simone remind us of the utter hilarity and intense jealousies of being eleven and the creeping understanding of sex.
