Program Requirements:
Designed for a young couple with four children, this contemporary residence is located in east Sarasota County. The design reflects the influence of the environmental design principles practiced by architects associated with the Sarasota School of Architecture movement in the 1950s and 60s. The Owner, a mechanical engineer and contractor, requested a home designed to meet his family’s growing needs, at the same time, planned to be highly sensitive and attuned to the native landscape. To achieve these aims, the plan employs an L-shaped configuration to allow the primary rooms to visually and physically connect with the landscape, while preserving all existing 238 trees on the site. A humble palate of materials consists of ground face masonry exposed on the exterior and interior, aluminum storefront glazing, and natural concrete floors.
