2017: GRAAD 1S SONDER HEENKOME
Krisis vir
plek in
laerskole
DESIRE RORKE
@dezzierorke
D
ie dreigende tekort aan laerskole in
Brackenfell sedert 2011 het vanjaar
n kommerwekkende werklikheid
nie.
Een so ouer wie se identiteit deur Ty-
gerBurger beskerm word, s haar kind is
nouop tallewaglyste by skole inBracken-
fell en naburige voorstede.
Sy verwysnahaarself en talle ander ou-
ers wat sy ken.
Diemeeste van ons het al ons aansoek-
vorms vir die kinders in Januarie van-
jaar ingegee, maar die Laerskool Brac-
kenfell het my eers verlede Maandag, die
eerste keer in vier maande, gekontak om
my in te lig daar is nie plek vir my dogter
vir volgende jaar nie, s sy.
Terselfdertyd, s di ouer, het baie an-
gaan?
Syhetmet geenanderkeuseniebynege
ander laerskole in Bellville, Kuilsrivier,
praat met my nie. Almal bou huise, maar
niemand bou skole nie.
OokTygerBurger kon nie veel meer be-
duidende antwoorde by die departement
kry nie.
Millicent Merton, woordvoerder by die
V Na bladsy 2.
Zeus, n geliefde herdershond van Bracken-
fell, is die Horskool Brackenfell se eerste
lewende gelukbringer.
n Kompetisie is toe vroer vanjaar begin
Zeus is verlede Saterdag by n rugbywed-
stryd as die skool se nuwe gelukbringer aan
die leerders bekendgestel.
Almal is welkom om by die Horskool
Brackenfell se volgende tuissportdag of by
Be happy, be proud,
be a brakkie!

daarom net n beperkte aantal nuwe
graad R-leerders aanvaar.
WKOD of Laerskool Brackenfell val nie.
Pre-primre onderrig in Suid-Afrika is
n vrywillige aangeleentheid en word nie
tans beskou as verpligte onderwys nie. Die
administrasie van die pre-primre skool se
fooie word goedgunstiglik deur die admini-
stratiewepersoneel vanLaerskoolBracken-
fell behartig, het dr. Guillaume Smit, voor-
sitter van die beheerliggaam, geskryf.
Hy het reageer op n medianavraag nadat
talle kinders di skool verbied is nadat hulle
ouers met betalings agtergeraak het.
DiePre-primre SkoolBrackenfell is vol-
voeg.
Indien ouers bykomende betalingsre-
eers oor sowat drie jaar in Brackenfell ge-
bou sal word. Di skool, wat in Vredekloof
gebou word, sal teen Januarie 2019 gereed
wees vir kinders uit Brackenfell en omlig-
gende gebiede, s sy.
Die skool sal 1 200 leerders in 29 klaska-
mers, waarvan vier graad R-klasse gaan
hoof,MarkMofoking, eerder gekontakmoet
word.

S
ome 291 children were profiled and
fingerprinted in a massive four-hour
missing person operation held at Ca-
peGate ShoppingCentre over theweekend.
The campaignwas hosted byBrackenfell
police in partnership with the mall, the
Brackenfell CPF and Victim Support Unit,
Teahmo and Pink Ladies.
The aim was to create awareness
around the process to follow when having
to report a missing child and the impor-
tance of providing as much as possible in-
formation to the police about the missing
person, says police spokesperson War-
rant Officer Erica Crous.
Parents completed forms providing all
the relevant information about the child as
well as identifiable marks or scars on the
childs body. The child was then weighed,
measured and fingerprinted.
The forms were given to the parents to
take home and safeguard. The ideal would
be to update the information on this form
every three to six months, she says.
If a child goes missing, the parent can
then bring the form, containing the most
important information, to the police sta-
tion.
From experience we know how we
sometimes struggle to get this information.
It has happened in the past that we had to
wait up to aweek to get amost recent photo
of a missing person from the family to dis-
tribute.
In one case the most recent photo that
could be provided was of when the child
was two years old, she says.
This is the third consecutive year that
Brackenfell police hosted this campaign
andCrous says she hopes it becomes an an-
nual institution.
We are extremely thankful to all the rel-
evant role players for the huge role they
played in ensuring the success of this day.
By taking hands we can make a differ-
ence.

Community sweeps own porch
DESIRE RORKE
A
s part of their Broken Windows
project, residents from Welgele on
Saturday literally and figuratively
swept up their front porch.
During a clean-up operation, two bakkie
loads of rubbish were gathered from green-
belt areas in and around Welgele.
Thirty community members, young and
old, helped with this neighbourhood watch
project assisted by local security companies
and Sector 4 police commanderWarrant Of-
ficer Henry Waterson, says Elle Muller.
It took three groups about two hours to
clean the area, whereafter everyone en-
joyed some coffee and rusks together. The
day was a massive success and we hope to
continue this initiative once every two
months to maintain cleanliness and order
in our little community, she says.
The broken windows theory was first
coined in the 1990s as a criminological theo-
ry referring to the effect of urban disorder
on crime trends and social behaviour.
It states that by maintaining, cleaning
and monitoring urban environments an at-
mosphere of order and lawfulness is estab-
lished that prevents more serious crimes
from happening.
In other words dont allow small disor-
ders to lead to larger ones.
During the late 1990s, then mayor of New
York City, Rudolph Giuliani, became the
firstmayorworldwide to successfully apply
this theory in the streets of the mega city,
causing crime rates to drop dramatically.
Obviously murder and graffiti are two
vastly different crimes. But they are part of
the same continuum, and a climate that tol-
erates one is more likely to tolerate the oth-
er, he told the press in 1998.
Over the last decade the theory was also
accepted and applied in the City of Cape
Town by several city improvement districts
ona large scale andneighbourhoodwatches
on a smaller scale.
Muller says this makes perfect sense.
When litter accumulates on pavements,
people start leaving bags of refuse outside.
As the area becomes dirty, petty crimes be-
comes prevalent and respectable residents
start moving out of an area, something that
is not going to happen here, she says.
Residents before they hit the streets.
The Brackenfell Athletics Club and the Bar
Flies Motorcycle Club are holding a doggie
walk and fun run on Saturday 4 June to
raisemoney for animal shelters in the area.
All funds will be used to buy dog food
which is always in shortage for shelters
in our area, says a spokesperson of the ath-
letics club.
The fun run will start at the Bottelary
TennisClubnext toCafMamboat 10:00, fol-
lowed by the doggie walk at 10:15. Food and
beverages will be on sale. Later the evening
the Bar Flieswill host a party and bring and
braai at the club house starting at 19:00.
Entry to all events will be R30 per person
and donations of dog foodwill be welcomed.

andalism of fire hydrants in informal
housing areas poses an immediate
safety risk to those who live there.
Much damagewas caused in aWallacede-
ne shack fire last week Tuesday afternoon,
when fire services battled to find aworking
fire hydrant.
The cause of the fire is not certain, but
according to proportional city councillor,
Roxanne Hoorn, the small fire that broke
out in one shack very quickly spread to de-
stroy about five or six other shacks, displac-
ing many families.
At a subcouncil meeting held the follow-
ing day subcouncil chairman Grant Twigg
peppered officials from fire and rescue ser-
vices with questions relating to the prob-
lem. According to an official representing
the department, fire hydrants in the in-
formal areas often represent problems.
If it is not the brass fittings that are sto-
len to be sold for cash, hydrants simply dis-
appear as new shacks are built around
them or even over them, he said.
For the same reason repair teams often
cant find fire hydrants for maintenance
purposes.
And the oneswe domaintain get vandal-
ised on an ongoing basis. At one point we
replaced the brass fittings with plastic, but
found that this was not a durable option.
Due to this we always call for extra wa-
ter tankers to accompany the fire trucks to
fires in areas such as Wallacedene, but on
this occasion the water tankers arrived
late, causing a delay, he said.
Twigg was adamant that new creative so-
lutions had to be found to address the prob-
lem.
The City has to come up with ways to
secure water infrastructure in the same
way it secures electrical infrastructure.
Moreover, we have to identify all the prob-
lems we face in this regard in order to ad-
dress it.
. In the early hours of Sunday morning
another shack fire broke out, this time in
the neighbouring Bloekombos, where four
people died.
Nowater for fires
The Rent-A-Cop programme in Kraaifon-
tein is paying off, thanks to ward allocation
funding towards the appointment of dedi-
cated law enforcement officers in the area.
There are currently two rent-a-cops who
operate in ward 7 and two who operate in
ward 8.
During themonth ofApril alone, the rent-
a-cops in these two wards received and at-
tended to 28 complaints, issued 28 fines, and
conducted 43 operational interventions and
102 hot-spot patrols.
The rent-a-cops are doing an amazing
job and this is money well spent to ensure
that Kraaifontein is a safer place to live. I
am currently assisting with morning pa-
trols in Northpine at 05:00 every morning
as part of my contribution to safeguarding
the Northpine neighbourhood, said the
Citys Bergdal subcouncil chairperson,
Grant Twigg.
Rent-a-cops work with the existing law
enforcement officers and meet with ward
councillors bi-weekly to discuss operation-
al matters and crime intelligence for the ar-
ea. Hotspot areas have been identified and
are patrolled on a daily basis.
Their duties include issuing notices with
regard to dog complaints, warning notices,
attending to general complaints, removing
loiterers, making arrests and dealing with
unlicensed motor vehicles, parking on red
lines, parking on sidewalks, and parking in
disabled bays, among others.

ith the advent of the new Munici-
pal Planning Tribunal (MPT), the
developmental landscape of Cape
Town will be changing fast and furious.
The MPT, consisting of a panel of town
planners only, will give effect to new legis-
lation to bring town planning into align-
ment with the transformation that has tak-
en place in other facets of local govern-
ment.
The determination of all land use appli-
cations and future developments will thus
be taken out of the hands of local ward
councillors, who traditionally represent-
ed the interests of their constituents at
council level.
Executive mayor Patricia de Lille said
that the new process was designed to pro-
vide fairness and equality and to readdress
previous wrongs brought about by Apart-
heid planning.
Therefore it will bring about a more in-
tegrated, high density city, where all peo-
ple will be living closer to their places of
work, she said.
One of the objectives is to reduce travel
times and congestion on Cape Town
roads.
De Lille was speaking at the recent con-
ference of the of theWesternCapeDevelop-
ment Forum (WCDF) held in Century City.
MPTs were made mandatory in all prov-
inces by the Spatial Planning andLandUse
Management Act (SPLUMA) in 2013.
In Cape Town, sittings of the MPT com-
menced in October last year, whence 180
applications have been determined. Of
these less than 2% were refused.
Not a new concept
David Daniels, chairperson of Cape
Towns first MPT, explained the concept of
municipal planning tribunals.
It is not a new concept being introduced
in the Development Facilitation Act (DFA)
in Gauteng in 1995, but found to be uncon-
stitutional, he said.
The idea was again pursued in the 2001
White Paper on Spatial Planning with the
core notion that decision making on town
planning matters are technical in nature
and should therefore be done by practition-
ers with the relevant technical proficien-
cy.
Even though new local government leg-
islation was introduced to govern munici-
palities, local governments proceeded to
develop their own Spatial Development
Frameworks with limited policy or politi-
cal guidance. Land use decisionswere thus
still being decided in terms of the old order
Land use Planning Ordinance (LUPO).
The new order legislation was intro-
duced in the Western Cape in 2014 by the
Western Cape Land Use Planning Act (LU-
PA), whereafter the MPT was established
at the end of 2015.
The above legislation flowed from thena-
tional Spatial Planning and LandUseMan-
agement Act (SPLUMA) of 2013.
In Cape Town, 21 town planners were ap-
pointed to the tribunal, whose decisions
will be guided by SPLUMAprinciples such
as spatial justice and sustainability. It will
also have to comply with environmental
legislation.
Daniels stressed the fact that the impact
of future developments on property values
will not be the sole factor to be taken into
account with decision making. Several
factors such as social and economic im-
pact, impact on heritage, capital invest-
ment and traffic impacts are to be taken in-
to account as well as how negative impacts
can be mitigated.
It is hard to say
how much
weight will be
given to property
values alone.
Each case will be
determined on
its own merit,
he said.
All of these
criteria are open
to interpretation
and require exer-
cise of judge-
ment. In decid-
ing on a matter, the MPT may impose rea-
sonable conditions to ensure there are
positive outcomes from its decisions.
Council also adopted a set of rules of pro-
cedure for meetings of the MPT, which in-
cludes guidelines for oral hearings.
Objections
Residents objecting against newdevelop-
ments can apply to address the MPT at
such oral hearings. Tribunalmeetings will
take place once a month in each region of
the City, where ward councillors and the
public can attend and participate in oral
hearings.
It is disappointing though that very few
ward councillors or members of the public
have up until now attended such meet-
ings, he said. Ward councillors can use
this opportunity to bring justified con-
cerns of their constituents to the fore.
Ward councillor Marian Nieuwoudt,
who attended the MPT meetings, told Tyg-
erBurger residents of Cape Town will have
to educate themselves with the functions
and procedures
of theMPT in or-
der to have their
voices heard in
future develop-
ments in their
areas.
If not, they
will be excluded
from decisions
that may affect
their immediate
area, she said.
As ward
councillor I can
advise them on
planning issues but I cant formulate their
arguments for them.
In the Northwest the MPT panel meets
in the Goodwood Council Chamber on the
first Tuesday of each month and considers
applications from the Blaauwberg and Ta-
ble Bay planning districts.
The Northeast panel meets in the Bell-
ville Council Chamber on the third Tues-
day of eachmonth to consider applications
from the Tygerberg and northern planning
districts.
In the City of Cape Town, the Executive
Mayor is the appeal authority and theMay-
or has set up a panel to advise her on ap-
peals against decision taken by the autho-
rised official(s) or the MPT, says Daniels.
He concluded by saying that the intro-
duction of MPTs is an important step for-
ward in the transformation of local govern-
ment in South Africa.
Cape Town to change fast, furious
Daniels stressed the
fact that the impact of
future developments on
property valueswill not
be the sole factor to be
taken into accountwith
decisionmaking

ie Kuilsrivier-polisie ondersoek tans
altesaam 20 klagte van bedrog wat by
die polisiekantoor aangemeld is se-
dert Januarie vanjaar.
Die sake hou glo verbandmet aanlyn-ver-
kopewaarin diemisdadigers verskeie soort
loop, s Van Niekerk. Hy s tot dusver is
daar n reeks sulke gevalle in die Kuilsri-
vier-polisie-gebied aangemeld.
Die betrokkemisdadigers sit egter in Jo-
hannesburg,vertel hy.Hysdiebankreke-
ning wat geskep word en waarin slagoffers
geld inbetaal, word geopen, maar weer ge-
sluit sodra betaling ontvang is.
dit by banke in Johannesburg geopen.
Verskeie soortgelyke aanlyn-transaksies
nier as te huur of verkoop geadverteer.
Die huurder of koper wat belangstel in
die eiendomsal geld by die bedrier se reke-
ning inbetaal, maar agterna uitvind dat hy
of sy ingeloop is, sVanNiekerk.

Now open in Aurora, Durbanville!
A
neglected border collie in the middle
of nowhere was the inspiration for a
fundraising cycling challenge over
480 km in less than 30 hours to raise
money for the sterilisation of animals.
A total of R30 000 was raised by the group
of 13 cyclists and four support drivers, all
from the northern suburbs, with the chal-
lenge of riding non-stop from Oudtshoorn
to Durbanville in under 30 hours all in aid
of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW).
The ride was organised by Durbanville
residents Neil and Belinda van Tonder, also
the organisers of the popular Durbie Dash
cycling event, as part of FAWs tenth anni-
versary year.
Neil was inspired to organise the chal-
lenge by an experience he hadwhile partici-
pating in the 7-day Cape Pioneer.
In the middle of nowhere, we came
across a neglected border collie. I logged the
GPS co-ordinates and contacted Border Col-
lie Rescue, who rescued him. I have never
forgotten this dog, he said.
VanTonder, also a regular volunteerwith
FAW for over two years, explained that the
sterilisation of dogs and cats in townships
is FAWsmain area of focus as it is the best
way to combat animal neglect and abuse in
the long-term.
She said: We, at FAW, would like to
thank each and every sponsor and donor,
the support drivers and especially the rid-
ers for their hard work. The difference this

A well-known photographer from Durban-
ville is hosting a free photo shoot event this
Sunday (29 May) at Altydgedacht in aid of
theDaniel and Friends Fund and theYarden
Childrens Enrichment Centre.
While the fund supports special needs
children and their parents, Yarden offers
daycare to these children. In his endeavours
as a photographer, Neels has seen all sides
of life: the good, the bad and the ugly. Its
when he takes photographs of children, es-
pecially those who are sick, have been ne-
glected or have special needs that he counts
his blessings.
I believe in order to succeed in life, you
should also give back. Thats the reason I
started my #GivingBack campaigns, says
Neels Kleynhans of NK Photography.
Toqualify for a free photo shoot onSunday
between 09:30 and 13:30, bring along one of
the following: a pack of Huggies nappies
(size 3 to 5); Pampers (size 3 to 6); Molicare

Kritiese tekort aan pleegouers in
Suid-Afrika het die hulporganisa-
sie Solidariteit Helpende Hand ge-
noodsaak om n bewusmakingsveldtog
aangaande die kwessie van stapel te stuur.
Die hoeksteen van die veldtog bied n
spesiale digitale platform om die proses
vir potensile pleegouers makliker te
maak.
Afgevaardigdes van die organisasie se
hoofkantoor in Pretoria het Brackenfell
verledeDonderdag besoek omdiewebblad
in die Wes-Kaap bekend te stel.
Riaan de Plooy, adjunk- uitvoerende
hoof vanHelpendeHand, en Isabel Faurie,
maatskaplike werker, het met plaaslike
maatskaplikehulporganisasies ontmoet
omdie probleme rondomdie kwessie te be-
spreek.
Volgens Faurie het die getal pleegouers
in die land drasties afgeneem oor die afge-
lope drie jaar. Van meer as 570 000 pleeg-
ouers aan die einde van 2013, het hierdie
getal wat toelaes ontvang, gedaal geduren-
de 2016 tot 450 000, s Faurie. Omdat po-
tensile pleegouers worstel met heelwat
vrae oor pleegsorg, verhinder dit hulle om
hulself as pleegouers beskikbaar te stel,
meen sy.
Dis een van die redes waarom Helpen-
deHand diewebblad geskep hetwaar hier-
die vrae beantwoord kan word.
Voornemendepleegouers of personewat
hul woning as plek van veiligheid wil be-
skikbaar stel, kan op hierdiewebblad regi-
streer om hulself sodoende beskikbaar te
stel vir pleegsorg.
Hul gegewens word voorts aan die on-
derskeie geregistreerde kinderbesker-
wonings as plek van veiligheid in n krisis
kan aanbied. Daar is tans slegs 29 330
pleegouers geregistreer in di provinsie
waar middelmisbruik hoogty vier.
kenheid by armoede onder wit mense be-
kind. Pleegsorg behels dat n kind by ge-
keurde pleegouers geplaas word nadat hy
of sydeurdiekinderhof, ingevolgedieKin-
derwet, as sorgbehoewend bevind is, ver-
duidelik Faurie.
V Vir inligting, gaan na www.pleegsorg.co.za of
SMS pleegsorg na 38969 om R10 vir Helpende
Hand se pleegsorgfonds te skenk.

LEWENSKIEKIE
Nou kan ek s
ek voel dit
saammet jou
So het my ma altyd haar kinders
vermaan. Let op die waarskuwingstekens
voordat jy iets aanpak.
As koerantmens moet ons gedurig
waarsku: Moenie oor daardie brug stap
nie. Wees versigtig as jy by daardie
kruising stilhou.
Weens n sameloop van omstandighede
moes ek vandeesweek oor n brug stap
in my rugsak en my beursie in my
gatsak.
Minute later is ek sonder my geld,
selfoon, trouring en die werk se kamera
nadat twee jongens my beroof het.
Het ek my ma se vuur-waarskuwing
verontagsaam? Het ek my verhewe
gehou bo die mense
wat elke dag
sonder keuse oor
di brug mt stap?
Of was dit n
geval van dit
gebeur net met
ander mense?
Ek het een keer
di aanhaling
gehoor: Dit sal
my verslaggewing daardie gevoel van
magteloosheid, weerloosheid en vrees
wanneer wildvreemde mense beslag l op
jou eiendom.
loop? Ja. Moes ek, by nabetragting,
eerder n ander roete gekies het? Jip.
Is my gevoel van veiligheid onder my
voete uitgeruk deur skermunkels wat net
op soek is na hul volgende fix?
In hierdie stadium sien ek almal as
verdagtes.
Maar ek hoop hierdie ervaring sal my
gevoel. Brenden Ruiter

I read the article Laat ge-
stremdes se parkeerplekke
oop, TB, 18 May, with great
interest, and agree wholeheart-
edly that the fraudulent use of
disabled parking bays must be
punished and the drivers fined
heavily.
I am a healthy, able-bodied
59-year-old. My husband and I
moved to Durbanville about a
year ago, with my 87-year-old
mother who suffers from
severe osteoporosis, and can
only walk if she wears a back
brace, uses her walking stick
and uses a shop basket trolley
for support.
She does not need to go out
often, as we provide all her
needs, but every now and then,
its just nice to see the world
outside her room, and this is
never for long, as she tires
quickly.
On recommendation of our
doctor, we applied for a
disabled parking disc when we
still lived on the Atlantic
Seaboard, and were granted it
twice. Her last licence expired
in March of this year, and we
have stopped using it, for fear
of getting a fine. A new
application was made at the
Durbanville Traffic Depart-
ment. We complied with all
requested documents, but our
application was denied. The
reason given that old age is
not a disability, and, since the
doctor stated that she can get
in and out of the car unaided,
was reason enough not to
grant this disc.
I was shocked and disap-
pointed. My mother gave up
driving her own car some five
years ago, due to failing
eyesight and troubles with her
back: she battles to reverse
park and very sensibly feels
that she should no longer
drive. Thanks to the Traffic
Department, she will now see
even less of our new and
beautiful surroundings. We are
all so very happy on this side
of the boerewors-gordyn but
this left us all bitterly disap-

Re. Plastic not the enemy we
are, TB, 18 May. Machines are
now commercially available
which will convert waste plastic
into fuel (usually diesel fuel).
In order to publicise this, a
light aircraft is to fly from San
Francisco to Alaska, using
plastic derived fuel.
The fact that the fuel is to be
used in an aircraft should
dispel any fears concerning the
quality of the fuel.
It has been suggested that it
will be economic to pay for
scrap plastic.

(VRCID) advertised a vacant
post in TygerBurger. Via this
letter I would like to give some
sound advice to potential job
seekers on how to apply for a
job and make an impression on
the potential employer.
First of all, read the require-
ment of the post. For example,
if it says that you must not
submit more than five pages, do
not submit six pages. By doing
this it means you are not
following the set requirements.
Secondly, do not attach
certificates, copy of ID or any
other documentation if the
advert clearly says you should
not. Thirdly, if you are asked to
send a motivation letter as to
why you should be considered,
do research on the employer
and the specific needs they are

Bellville directorUgaCarliniwill be in the
spotlight next week when she premiers
her new film Alison the Movie at the En-
counters International Film Festival.
Based on the book I have life: Alisons
Journey as told to Marianne Thamm, the
film tells the true-life story ofAlisonBotha
who was raped, stabbed and disembow-
elled, but survived to rebuild her life as an
inspirational speaker.
Themovie is alsoUgas debuthybrid fea-
ture film/documentary which sees her
telling Alisons story using a mixture of
fairy tale idiomandunflinching frankness
and putting real-life heroes from that
night alongside actors like another Bell-
ville local, Christia Visser who plays a
young Alison, Zak Hendrikz, De Klerk Oe-
lofse and Francois Maree.
Uga, from Towerkop Creations, special-
ises in female driven heroine stories so
there could be no higher honour for her
than to make her debut feature film about
one of South Africas most loved heroines.
This is the first time Ali-
son has ever allowed camer-
as into her home, and Uga
not only tells the story of her
brutal experience, but also
shows theaudiencewhat she
has done and become since.
With this in mind, Pen-
guin, the publishers behind
the top selling I have Life,
have partneredwith the film
team to release a film tie-in
edition of the book with a
new chapter that looks at
Alisons life since the books
first publication in 1998.
Alison has already been dubbed a story
of monsters, miracles and hope. While
the movie will enjoy its cinema release in
August, it will be screened for the first
time at the Encounters International Doc-
umentary FilmFestival at theV&AWater-
fronts Cinema Noveau
and The Labia Theatre
from Thursday 2 to Sun-
day 12 June. Uga, Alison
and actress Christia will
launch the new edition
of I have life at Cinema
Noveau from 18:45 on
Friday 3 June before
hosting a Q&A session
where theyll be joined
by Marianne Thamm at
The Labia on Tuesday 7
June.

A
s the popularity of social media sites
and chat groups continues to grow, ex-
perts havewarned parents to be aware
of a growing trend in cyberbullying.
Speaking to parents during a recent public
meeting in Table View, Evan Booyens of Da
Vinci Forensics explains cyberbullying is
when someone uses the internet, cellphones
and other technological devices to send or
post text or images intended to hurt, embar-
rass, threaten, torment, humiliate or intimi-
date their victim.
He sayswhile cyberbullying is rampant in
countries like America, leading to various
emotional problems in teens and in some
cases suicide, South African teens were
slowly starting to feel the impact. Similar to
the old fashioned form of bullying, Booyens
explains various tactics such as gossip,
threats and trickery are used among chil-
dren. Howeverwhen online these tactics are
amplified as the bullies can now torment
others anonymously.
In the online space, he says, new tactics
are used andmost disturbing is the creation
of fake social media profiles. Here the bully
creates a Facebook page or any other form
of social media account and poses as their
victim, placing embarrassing or false posts.
In South Africa the most commonly used
social media site is Facebook and Booyens
says inmost cases girls are the perpetrators.
There are various reasons children do
this. They include revenge, power, enter-
tainment, stupidity or problems at home.
Booyens says the effects on the victim
range from sadness and anxiety to depres-
sion, anger and in some cases, suicide.
So why is cyberbullying so hurtful? Be-
cause in a digital age, bullying is not fleet-
ing. Booyens explains at the top of the list
is the permanence of a hurtful post on social
media. Here the insults, comments or imag-
es can be preserved by the person who was
bullied or others can read or view it again
and the harm is reinflicted each time.
Anotherdownfall is thatwith socialmedia
sites, the bully now has a bigger audience
than just a school hallway or locker room.
This, Booyens says, the amount of people
able to view the damaging material increas-
es the victims humiliation.
According to international studies, 92.6%
of teens say cruel behaviour takes place on
Facebook. Booyens says those same studies
indicate that 65.8% of teens responded to
their bullies of which 35% where personal
confrontations.
Booyens says while South African teens
were not as hard hit by cyberbullying, its
important for parents to be aware of the po-
tential dangers.
It wont take that long for our children
tobehit hardby this and its alreadyhappen-
ing on Facebook. There are some simple
ways to help prevent it.
First on the list is for parents to have their
childrens social media passwords. He says
while teens will complain about their priva-
cy being violated, it is important for parents
to have access tomonitor their interactions.
He says parents should encourage their
children to speak up if they are being bullied
and should be taught how to block their bul-
lies from their social media accounts.

Every year Heidi Ansley, owner of the
Piet-my-Vrou mosaic studio in the Rust-
en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville and her
students do a special mosaic project in
aid of charity. This year the proceedswill
go to the Cape KidneyAssociation, a non-
profit organisation that helps destitute
renal and dialysis patients with support
ranging from monthly food parcels to
travel allowances to get to the hospital.
The choice of charity was sparked by
Cindy de Beer from Bellville, who has
been living on dialysis for 36 years.
Cindy is a private patient, but serving
on our committee, and knowing the
plight of renal failure and the dialysis,
she feels the need to assist patients that
are not as fortunate as her to have amedi-
cal aid, says Molly Fab, executive di-
rector of the Cape Kidney Association.
On average a hemodialysis treatment
lasts about four hours and is done three
times per week.
The project was launched at the open-
ing of the studios yearly exhibition on
Tuesday 10 May and to date has raised
R13 000.
The students have set up amosaicwork
station in the gallery area. Guests can
sponsor a glass tile for R20, or five for
R100, and become part of creating a beau-
tiful artwork. All it takes is applying a
thin layer of glue to the back of the glass
tile and placing it securely next to one al-
ready stuck down.
The completed mosaics are up for sale
and all of the proceedswill go towards the
Cape Kidney Association.
The project runs until the end of the ex-
hibition on Wednesday 8 June. The Rust-
en-Vrede Gallery is openMondays to Fri-
days from 09:00 to 17:00 (until 16:00 from
1 June) and Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00.
