• Sometimes the Dream is identified with success in sports or how working class immigrants seek to join the American way of life

• Has a different meaning to every U.S. citizen

Trends in Responses

Page 21: Two Sides of the American Dream

The idea that a family’s material well-being will only get better over time is simply not sustainable

U.S. is not nearly as economically mobileDecrease in the ability of people to

move up the ladder within a lifetime or from one generation to the next

Decrease in the level of income inequalityDiminishes the size of the middle class

(Gregory Rodriquez, 2010)

Reasons in Decline

Page 22: Two Sides of the American Dream

As college educated students, what reasons would you provide for supporting the American dream?

Why do you think non-whites believe in the American dream over whites?

Where have you seen an increase in difficulty to move up the economic ladder?

Without competition in the workplace, would there be an incentive to strive? Why or why not?

Aside from economic mobility, what reasons could you provide for the decline in the American Dream?

(Gregory Rodriguez, 2010)
