Definition of True North Board
1True North and
Communications
Goal: Leaders use True North boards to check and adjust progress on major
goals
Minimum requirements for True North board:
1. Displays major goals/initiatives for unit and which FAS True
North pillar and scorecard measure they support
2. Progress/results are visually shown and it is clear whether or not
results are on-track (physical board makes visible from 5 feet
away and in 5 seconds)
3. Action plans are shown for those not on-track
4. Unit team uses board at least monthly to check and adjust their
major goals/initiatives
True North Goal Alignment Step by Step
1. What: Start with listing out the top goals, initiatives or work for your area or team
2. Align: Take each goal (one by one) and identify a) FAS True North pillar that will be most impacted with the
achievement of this goalb) FAS measure that will be most impacted
3. How: List out “how” the goal in step 2 will be achieved – activities already underway or planned; who will own this
When doing True North work, involve as many staff unit as possible (particularly when problem solving).
