Travel Tips for Seniors Travel can be physically and emotionally stressful for seniors and those who travel with them, but there
is a lot you can do to reduce these challenges.
Have your loved one visit a doctor before the trip to ensure she is healthy enough for travel
and all her travel needs are met.
While traveling, keep all of your loved one’s medications with you at all times; do not pack
them in a checked bag.
Your loved one should wear loose clothing for the best comfort and circulation.
On long flights, encourage your loved one to get up and walk the aisle every few hours to
reduce the risk of circulation, joint and muscle problems.
If traveling internationally, consider travel health insurance for your loved one. Seniors are at
higher risk for health complications while traveling. Many insurance plans, including
Medicare, do not cover out-of-country medical care.
Work with your airline ahead of time and take advantage of any resources it offers, such as
wheelchairs and airport escorts. Ask if your airline offers a senior discount on tickets.
Include your aging loved one in planning for your trip from the beginning so she feels involved
and knows what to expect on the trip.
If you do not feel you will be able to meet all of your loved one’s needs, consider hiring a
caregiver for the trip. In-home care companies like Right at Home offer these services.
With appropriate planning and consideration for your loved one’s needs, you all can reach
your destination safely and without incident.
