ThebasicsafetynormIEC61508differentiatesbetweenmeasurestoeliminateerrorsandmeasurestocontrolerrors.Themeasurestoeliminateerrorsembracetheentiredesignanddeve-lopmentprocess.Thesearerequiredforthedevelopmentofindividualcomponentsandtheyservetoavoidsystematicerrors.Importantforerrorcontrolarequantifiablecharacteristicsoftheconsideredcomponentsandofthecompletesystem.Priorityhastheprobabilityofadangerousfailureofthesafetyfunction.Thecalculationresultsoftheratedfailureprobabilityofallindividualcomponentsfortheentiresafetychain.

Theactualvaluesforpositionandspeedaretransferredintwoslots:
Forsafetransmissiontheactualpositionvaluesofbothrotaryencodersystemsarecompared.Ifthedifferenceissmallerthantheadjustedcontrolwindow,therotaryencodervaluedoescountassafe.ThesafeactualpositionvalueandthehencecalculatedsafespeedvaluewillbetransferredoverthePROFIsafetelegram.Thepartofthecontroltakingonthesafetyrelatedtaskscanprocessthesevalues.

Themeasurementvaluesofsafespeedandsafemultiturnpositionaredeterminedwithinthecertifiedrotaryencoder.Theyaretransmittedoverasafebussystemtoanequallycertifiedsafetymodule.Therefore,thesafesensorvaluesareavailableforeachcontrolleroftheentiremachineorplant.Thisenablesintelligentsafetyconceptswherehumansandmachinessharetheworkenvironmentwithoutmechanicalsafetydevices.Workareascanbedividedintodifferentzoneswithadjustedsafetyrequire-ments.Positionandspeedvaluesareavailableforeithersafetyapplicationsoverasecuredchannelaswellasfornormalautomationfunctionsoveranotsecuredchannel(seepage11).Therefore,arotaryencoderforpositionfeedbackisunnecessary.DuetotheintegrationofthePLCasafeoperationwithalargerangeoffunctionscanbeguaranteed.
