1) Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business reward’s one or
more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate's own marketing efforts. The
industry has four core players: the merchant (also known as 'retailer' or 'brand'), the network (that
contains offers for the affiliate to choose from and also takes care of the payments), the publisher
(also known as 'the affiliate'), and the customer. The market has grown in complexity, resulting in the
emergence of a secondary tier of players, including affiliate management agencies, super-affiliates
and specialized third party vendors.
Affiliate marketing overlaps with other Internet marketing methods to some degree, because
affiliates often use regular advertising methods. Those methods include organic search engine
optimization (SEO), paid search engine marketing (PPC - Pay Per Click), e-mail marketing, content
marketing and in some sense display advertising. On the other hand, affiliates sometimes use less
orthodox techniques, such as publishing reviews of products or services offered by a partner.

Smart Affiliate Marketing Strategies
Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other
people’s (or company’s) products.
You find a product you like, promote it to others, and earn a piece of the profit for each
sale that you make.
You’re happy because you earned a commission…
The company is happy because they have a new sale from a customer that they might
not have normally been able to reach…
And the customer is happy because they learned about a product from you that will
hopefully fulfill a need or desire.
The beauty of Affiliate Marketing is that you don’t have to invest the time and effort to
create a product to sell. You can begin selling something as an affiliate as soon as you
have a platform to sell it on.
Affiliate marketing is something I’ve been doing ever since I started my first business
online on my LEED Exam website – promoting a third party company’s practice exam
software along with my own published eBooks and audio guides.

I also do Affiliate Marketing here on the Smart Passive Income blog, sharing many of
the tools and services that I use to run my online businesses, and if you or anyone else
purchases through my Affiliate links I earn a commission. If you’ve purchased from my
links before, thank you so much! I greatly appreciate your support!
THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT RULES I HAVE FOR
AFFILIATE MARKETING
Before I share the strategies that I’ve used to generate over $20,000 in affiliate
commission’s per month, there are extremely important rules I use when promoting
products that are not my own. You don’t have to use these rules in order to become an
affiliate or be successful at it, but it’s what has helped me grow my affiliate income
tremendously over the last couple of years:
I only recommend products as an affiliate that I’m extremely very familiar with –
preferably products that I’ve used before and have helped me achieve something. If
I’m not confident in the product and I don’t feel it will positively help people, I will not
promote it.
I never directly tell anyone to buy a product. I always recommend products based on
my experience and in the context of what I’ve done or what I’m doing.
Honest Affiliate Marketing has always worked best for me, so I encourage you to do
the same.

Big Mistakes New Affiliate Marketers Make
When I first started in Affiliate Marketing, all I wanted was to just make money. Off I ran
in every direction, trying everything, with no real idea of the mistakes I was making that
could very well affect my chances at long term success.
Through my years of experience with both Affiliate Marketing and teaching other
Affiliate Marketers, I have come to the conclusion that there are 7 big mistakes new
Affiliate Marketers make.
Let’s talk about these mistakes in more detail.
1) Selling Rather Than Helping
Yes, the word “marketing” is part of the phrase affiliate marketing, but for the most part,
our job as an affiliate is not to sell — that is the job of the sales page our affiliate links
lead the reader to.
When I first started, my overwhelming (and totally naive) impulse was to fill my pages
with words and links that screamed “BUY THIS NOW!” I didn’t help the reader learn
why they should have this product. I only wanted them to click a link which would
hopefully lead to a commission for me.
People want to hear from other people when making a decision to buy a product or not
— that’s why the reviews on Amazon products are so powerful. Those reviews are
genuine feedback from people who (usually) have absolutely nothing to gain if
Get the latest updates Here 8
someone buys that product or not.
When we talk more like an unbiased reviewer rather than a high-pressure salesperson,
we will find we make more sales and people will come back for advice on other
products in the future.
2) Too Many!
This is another big mistake I made when starting out — joining any and every affiliate
program I came across. While I absolutely do believe in cultivating multiple streams of
income when working online, there is a point where you have too much to deal with
and it becomes unmanageable.
Choose your affiliate programs wisely and don’t overload yourself.
3) Not Testing
Whenever I choose to promote a Clickbank offer (for example), I put myself in the
shoes of a potential customer and opt in to test the vendors’ follow up sequence.
I learned this the hard way.
Nothing breaks a reader’s trust more than being led to a promotion that will blow up
their inbox. Put yourself in the shoes of a potential customer and see what will happen
if they follow your Advice.

4) Not Tracking
This was a BIG mistake I made when I first started out. I began my affiliate marketing
career using free-to-make web pages on a site called Squidoo (and I still do this to this
day).
I am fond of promoting Amazon products on these pages, but would forget to use
unique tracking affiliate links on each page.
Why this is a mistake? Very simple — when you make a sale, you want to know
WHERE the sale came from. This enables you to know which pages are converting
well so you can grow and scale that campaign.
Creating a unique tracking ID for an Amazon link is easy. Simply log in to your Amazon
affiliate dashboard, click “Account Settings” at the very top on the right, then click
“Manage Tracking IDs”. From there you can make a new tracking ID so you can track
which web page/campaign sold what. You can learn more about using Amazon’s
Tracking IDs here.
Yes, making any commission is cool, but knowing where and how you made that
commission is what makes you a better marketer. It lets you grow and scale your
campaigns — as opposed to working blindly.

5) Not Comparing
One of the best converting tactics I use to sell affiliate products online (especially
physical products from Amazon) is to compare the “main” product with two other similar
products.
When people are in buying mode for a physical product, they tend to have their options
narrowed down to 2 or 3 and need help making the choice that is best for them.
By comparing the “3 Best Widgets For _______”, I not only help my readers make a
choice, but I also have my affiliate links there for THREE products instead on only one.
Over time, when I track that web page, I will be able to see which product is most
interesting to readers and move the best converting product to the top of the page for
better CTR.
Comparison web pages are not only very popular and helpful for readers. They are
also very profitable for you.
6) Make Money Online Products
Perhaps you’ve seen this before. You’re in a “learn online marketing” type forum. A
person publishes a post complaining that they can’t make a dime online. But in their
signature line they have something along the lines of “I Made 50 Million Dollars with
This” followed by their affiliate link.
Get the latest updates Here 11
It happens all the time. Please, don’t be that person.
If you’re new and you want to promote products in the Make Money Online arena, don’t
make false claims that it made you money. In fact, don’t make false claims at all!
Sure, talk about the benefits of the product/training — maybe even why it sounds
awesome to you — but don’t try to trick people. You will ruin your credibility.
7) “Oh Look! A Butterfly”
This is the biggest downfall for any new affiliate marketer. In fact, it can cause really
big issues for seasoned affiliate marketers as well.
It is all too common to be working on one thing when all of a sudden something “shiny”
comes through your inbox or is mentioned in a forum you frequent. Then off you go
chasing some new idea to make money online.
Ignore the “butterflies” that are sure to fly by on a constant basis. They will just distract
you from your project/campaign at hand. One completed and profitable campaign is
worth so much more than 50 almost half-finished campaigns or projects.
Affiliate marketing is a business that requires self-motivation and focus. For many of
us, these are learned skills. Once you are aware of the mistakes that can cause a lack
of profits and productivity, you will be better able to grow your business and be
profitable long-term.

2) Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing is the process of gaining website traffic or attention through
social media sites.
Social media marketing programs usually center on efforts to create content that
attracts attention and encourages readers to share it across their social networks. The
resulting electronic word of mouth refers to any statement consumers share via the
Internet (e.g., web sites, social networks, instant messages, news feeds) about an
event, product, service, brand or company. When the underlying message spreads
from user to user and presumably resonates because it appears to come from a
trusted, third-party source, as opposed to the brand or company itself, this form of
marketing results in earned media rather than paid media.

10 Laws of Social Media Marketing
Leveraging the power of content and social media marketing can help elevate your
audience and customer base in a dramatic way. But getting started without any
previous experience or insight could be challenging.
It's vital that you understand social media marketing fundamentals. From maximizing
quality to increasing your online entry points, abiding by these 10 laws will help build a
foundation that will serve your customers, your brand and -- perhaps most importantly -
- your bottom line.
1. The Law of Listening
Success with social media and content marketing requires more listening and less
talking. Read your target audience’s online content and join discussions to learn what’s
important to them. Only then can you create content and spark conversations that add
value rather than clutter to their lives.
Get the latest updates Here 14
2. The Law of Focus
It’s better to specialize than to be a jack-of-all-trades. A highly-focused social media
and content marketing strategy intended to build a strong brand has a better chance
for success than a broad strategy that attempts to be all things to all people.
3. The Law of Quality
Quality trumps quantity. It’s better to have 1,000 online connections who read, share
and talk about your content with their own audiences than 10,000 connections who
disappear after connecting with you the first time.
4. The Law of Patience
Social media and content marketing success doesn’t happen overnight. While it’s
possible to catch lightning in a bottle, it’s far more likely that you’ll need to commit to
the long haul to achieve results.
Get the latest updates Here 15
5. The Law of Compounding
If you publish amazing, quality content and work to build your online audience of
quality followers, they’ll share it with their own audiences on Twitter, Facebook,
LinkedIn, their own blogs and more.
This sharing and discussing of your content opens new entry points for search engines
like Google to find it in keyword searches. Those entry points could grow to hundreds
or thousands of more potential ways for people to find you online.
6. The Law of Influence
Spend time finding the online influencers in your market who have quality audiences
and are likely to be interested in your products, services and business. Connect with
those people and work to build relationships with them.
If you get on their radar as an authoritative, interesting source of useful information,
they might share your content with their own followers, which could put you and your
business in front of a huge new audience.
Get the latest updates Here 16
7. The Law of Value
If you spend all your time on the social Web directly promoting your products and
services, people will stop listening. You must add value to the conversation. Focus less
on conversions and more on creating amazing content and developing relationships
with online influencers. In time, those people will become a powerful catalyst for word-
of-mouth marketing for your business.
8. The Law of Acknowledgment
You wouldn’t ignore someone who reaches out to you in person so don’t ignore them
online. Building relationships is one of the most important parts of social media
marketing success, so always acknowledge every person who reaches out to you.
9. The Law of Accessibility
Don’t publish your content and then disappear. Be available to your audience. That
means you need to consistently publish content and participate in conversations.
Followers online can be fickle and they won’t hesitate to replace you if you disappear
for weeks or months.
Get the latest updates Here 17
10. The Law of Reciprocity
You can’t expect others to share your content and talk about you if you don’t do the
same for them. So, a portion of the time you spend on social media should be focused
on sharing and talking about content published by others.
Social Media Mistakes
Social media has great potential for businesses looking to increase their reach, traffic
and leads. But when it’s not used properly, it can actually damage your brand’s
reputation.
This article will walk you through eight social media marketing mistakes you should
avoid at all costs.
1. Not properly vetting and supervising your social
media managers
Your social media managers are the face of your company online. With social media
now driving almost a third of all referral traffic, it’s absolutely critical that those
responsible for driving these referrals are up to the task.
Get the latest updates Here 18
While mistakes can’t always be avoided, we’ve seen too many examples of
inexperienced, untrained or poorly supervised employees getting free reign of the
company’s social media accounts.
Take the American Apparel debacle, for example. In celebration of the Fourth of July,
the company posted a photo of the Challenger space shuttle exploding in midair.
Apparently the social media manager was born after the 1986 disaster and mistook the
explosion for clouds or fireworks. This could easily have been avoided had there even
been one extra level of redundancy in place.
2. Not responding appropriately to negative feedback
Negative feedback is going to happen. You can choose to ignore it, fight back or take it
in stride. How you respond says a lot about your brand.
Some brands operate under the assumption that they can simply delete negative
comments without repercussions. Others believe that ignoring negative or
inflammatory comments is the way to go.
Rather than avoiding, why not use these situations as opportunities to shine? Respond
thoughtfully and promptly to negative comments, and use them as opportunities to
showcase your commitment to customer service.

3. Buying likes or followers
Buying fans or followers is risky business. Some brands still believe that padding their
numbers by paying for fictitious fans is a harmless endeavor. But did you know that
buying Facebook fans can actually hurt your brand by decreasing your overall reach?
Fake fans will never interact or engage with your page, signaling to Facebook that your
content isn’t interesting or valuable to your audience. This leads to an overall
algorithmic decrease in your post reach and visibility. You could also find your account
being closed, banned or deleted should Facebook find out about your schemes.
It’s far better to focus on attracting real, interested fans who will engage with your
posts.
4. Being a one-trick pony
Posting the same types of content again and again can convey the impression that
your brand is boring, uncreative or just not in tune with your audience. Instead of
posting link after link or quote after quote, change things up by posting a wide variety
of content.
When you get hung up on posting the same types of content again and again, your
followers will become less engaged and are more apt to think you simply don’t care
about posting engaging content.

5. Promoting your products … constantly
There’s a time and place for promoting your business or products, even on social
media. However, too many brands are still using social media as a channel for pushing
their marketing message.
Social selling is all about building relationships and trust that will ultimately lead to
sales. Don’t abuse the platform by using it as billboard or commercial. The 80/20
principle is a good rule of thumb: post engaging, high-value content 80 percent of the
time and promote your products no more than 20 percent of the time. Better yet, think
about how you can move your social media fans and followers into your online
marketing funnel -- then you never have to directly promote on social media.
6. Being inconsistent in use and messaging
Do you have a schedule for when and how often you post? Do you have a consistent
voice that you use across all your social media profiles? Do your profile and cover
photos convey what are you brand is about? How do you respond to negative
feedback or criticism?
The best way to be consistent in your social media marketing is to have a strategy in
place. This will include, among other elements, guidance about how and when you’ll
use social media:
Get the latest updates Here 21
Guidelines for how to respond to negative comments
A frequently asked questions document that various team members can refer to this
will help ensure consistency in messaging.
A repository of brand-related images staff can use for profile photos, cover photos, etc.
A posting schedule for each social media channel
7. Offering canned responses
Having a social media plan in place will help you to respond to questions and
comments in a consistent manner. But the "cut and paste" method of responding to
comments -- particularly to criticisms -- can lead to some pretty significant backlash.
In 2014, Kmart was heavily criticized for using this strategy to respond to criticisms
about their holiday hours and staffing policies. Using a handful of generic responses
didn’t go over well.
While having prepared responses in place for commonly asked questions can certainly
save you some time, use them with caution. Keep in mind that criticisms, negative
feedback and specific questions should generally be met with thoughtful, personalized
responses.

8. Spreading yourself too thin
Just because a social networking site exists doesn’t mean you have to use it.
Spreading yourself thin by committing to too many networks can mean you’re not using
any of them effectively.
Instead of spreading your valuable time and resources between eight sites, consider
choosing the top five, three or even two sites that are the best match for your target
market. It’s better to fully commit to a regular posting schedule on a few networks than
letting many lie dormant.
Final thoughts
Avoiding these mistakes all comes down to ensuring your team is properly trained,
using your resources wisely and responding to your fans and followers in a
professional manner. When it comes down to it, treating your social media followers
the same way you’d treat in-store customers or clients will help you avoid the worst of
these mistakes.

3) CPA Marketing
Cost Per Action or CPA (sometimes known as Pay Per Action or PPA; also Cost Per Conversion)
is an online advertising pricing model, where the advertiser pays for each specified action - for
example, an impression, click, form submit (e.g., contact request, newsletter sign up, registration
etc.), double opt-in or sale.
Direct response advertisers consider CPA the optimal way to buy online advertising, as an advertiser
only pays for the ad when the desired action has occurred. The desired action to be performed is
determined by the advertiser. Radio and TV stations also sometimes offer unsold inventory on a cost
per action basis, but this form of advertising is most often referred to as "per inquiry". Although less
common, print media will also sometimes be sold on a CPA basis.

4) Sale
A sale is the exchange of a commodity for money or service in return for money or the
action of selling something.
The seller or the provider of the goods or services completes a sale in response to
an acquisition, an appropriation or a request. There is a passing of title (property or
ownership) of the item, and the settlement of a price. A seller agrees upon a price
which he willingly gives ownership of the item. The seller, not the purchaser generally
executes the sale and it is completed prior to the obligation of payment.
Selling a product isn't as complicated as it's made out to be. At its most basic, a sales
program is defined principally by what you sell, who you sell to, and how you sell.
Beyond that, it all boils down to staying focused on the details outlined next, suitable
for both sales representative and for owners of small businesses.

How to Sell a Product
We are creatures of habit. American families, on average, buy the same 150 products
over and over again, which make up 85 percent of their household needs, according to
research out of Harvard Business School. So how can you get people to take a chance
on your new business and become loyal customers?
The trick is helping customers overcome their initial hesitation and making your new
item speak to customers in a relatable way.
Here are five ways to help your product sell itself in a crowded marketplace:
1. Broadcast your advantage. What makes you better than everyone else in the
industry? Be clear with customers from the start. Perceived advantage is built on
factors like greater prestige, more convenience, superior effectiveness or better value
for the money.
Even cleaning products, the most mundane of all consumer necessities, can win using
this theory. For example, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers solved the problems that previous
spray-on liquid cleaners claimed to, with the added advantage of not damaging the
paint on walls as competitors' products did. The brand made this ability to remove
touch marks without damaging walls clear through a TV ad campaign that
demonstrated the product at work. This provided positive reinforcement to consumers
before they made their purchase.

2. Fit into your customer's routine. How much effort is required for customers
to make the transition from a current product to yours? If the cost is more than its
relative advantage, most people won't try the new product. Febreze seems like one of
those success stories -- and it is -- but even P&G can make mistakes with their
branding, as was the case with Febreze Scent stories. In 2004, the company launched
a $5.99 scent "player" that was reminiscent of a CD player with five scent discs that
changed every half hour. Consumers were confused. They couldn't tell if the product
played music, freshened air or did both. Not knowing how or why they would use it,
they didn't.
3. Work right out of the box. When building new products, don't add work for the
buyer. Make your product work as intended the first time out and every time thereafter.
A kink-free garden hose, for example, should be kink free the first time and the
hundredth time; a children's toy should be easy to assemble; and you should never
expect a busy mom to spend more than five minutes figuring out how to use a new
slow-cooker.
4. Make benefits easy to spot. The more evident the perceived advantages, the
more your product will market itself. For example, the clear plastic packaging of 3M's
Get the latest updates Here 32
Command line of removable hooks allows you to see and understand how the product
enables you to hang and remove a hook without leaving a hole in the wall.
5. Let customers try it out. Tea bags were first used as giveaways so that people
could sample tea without buying large tins, vastly improving the "trial-ability" of brewed
tea, and eventually tea bags. Samples, giveaways and store demonstrations are tried-
and-true techniques for risk-free experimentation. If you can't afford to give your
product away, offer a tempting discount or "buy one get one" deal Depending on your
product and core customer, you can use sites like Gilt.com or Travel Zoo to make
enticing offers.
Local products or services benefit from actual social interaction: an informal gathering
in a home where guests can "play" with the product or try the service, a farmer's or
open-air market where consumers can touch and taste what you're selling and meet
you. The easier something is to try, the faster customers will want to buy it.

5) Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a
website or a web page in a search engine's "natural" or un-paid ("organic") search
results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more
frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from
the search engine's users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image
search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-
specific vertical search engines.
As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work, what
people search for, the actual search terms or keywords typed into search engines and
which search engines are preferred by their targeted audience. Optimizing a website
may involve editing its content, HTML and associated coding to both increase its

relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of
search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of backlinks, or inbound links,
is another SEO tactic.
What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
SEO is the practice of improving and promoting a website to increase the number of
visitors the site receives from search engines. There are many aspects to SEO, from
the words on your page to the way other sites link to you on the web. Sometimes SEO
is simply a matter of making sure your site is structured in a way that search engines
understand.
SEO isn't just about building search engine-friendly websites. It's about making your
site better for people too.
This guide is designed to describe all areas of SEO—from finding the terms and
phrases (keywords) that generate traffic to your website, to making your site friendly to
search engines, to building links and marketing the unique value of your site. If you are

Why does my website need SEO?
The majority of web traffic is driven by the major commercial search engines, Google,
Bing, and Yahoo! Although social media and other types of traffic can generate visits to
your website, search engines are the primary method of navigation for most Internet
users. This is true whether your site provides content, services, products, information,
or just about anything else.
Search engines are unique in that they provide targeted traffic—people looking for
what you offer. Search engines are the roadways that make this happen. If search
engines cannot find your site, or add your content to their databases, you miss out on
incredible opportunities to drive traffic to your site.
Search queries—the words that users type into the search box—carry extraordinary
value. Experience has shown that search engine traffic can make (or break) an
organization's success. Targeted traffic to a website can provide publicity, revenue,
and exposure like no other channel of marketing. Investing in SEO can have an
exceptional rate of return compared to other types of marketing and promotion.

Why can't the search engines figure out my site without
SEO?
Search engines are smart, but they still need help. The major engines are always
working to improve their technology to crawl the web more deeply and return better
results to users. However, there is a limit to how search engines can operate. Whereas
the right SEO can net you thousands of visitors and increased attention, the wrong
moves can hide or bury your site deep in the search results where visibility is minimal.
In addition to making content available to search engines, SEO also helps boost
rankings so that content will be placed where searchers will more readily find it. The
Internet is becoming increasingly competitive, and those companies who perform SEO
will have a decided advantage in visitors and customers.
Can I do SEO for myself?

a small amount of knowledge can make a big difference. Free SEO education is widely
available on the web, including in guides like this. Combine this with a little practice
and you are well on your way to becoming a guru.

Web traffic is the amount of data sent and received by visitors to a web site. Since the
mid-1990s, web traffic has been the largest portion of Internet traffic. This is
determined by the number of visitors and the number of pages they visit. Sites monitor
the incoming and outgoing traffic to see which parts or pages of their site are popular
and if there are any apparent trends, such as one specific page being viewed mostly
by people in a particular country. There are many ways to monitor this traffic and the
gathered data is used to help structure sites, highlight security problems or indicate a
potential lack of bandwidth not all web traffic is welcome.
Some companies offer advertising schemes that, in return for increased web traffic
(visitors), pay for screen space on the site. Sites also often aim to increase their web
traffic through inclusion on search engines and through search engine optimization.
