This lovely old cemetery is located on New Harmony Read in the extremewestern section of the Township, behind the church building. Only the rearsection (older stones) are published in this volume. Copied a very coldday in March, 1966.
The following was taken from "The History of Brown County, Ohio" pub.by W. H. Beers, Inc. (1883), page 563 captioned Pike Township:
"In 1827, services were held at the residence of Isaiah Wells, nearNew Harmony. Hector Sanford was the first preacher in that locality, anda Methodist Protestant in belief. David Hannah and Sanford Evans wereamong the pioneer preachers in the northwestern part of the township, andthe first church built in that section was on the land now belonging toCaroline Long. It was known as the Providence Meeting House, and was builtby the Methodist Episcopal Church organization in 1841. In 1846, a framechurch was built in the graveyard by the Methodist Protestant society.Jonathan Flood preached the dedicatory sermon. The members of the originalsociety were Isaiah Hells, Joseph Brower, James vIe11s, Elias Newberry,Daniel l.Jells,John Philipps, vli11iam Taylor, Smith J. Cowdrey and the wifeof each.
The Methodist Episcopal society built a frame church in town in 1853 butit has ceased to be used, and the house and lot have been sold.
In 1856, the Methodist Protestant society erected the present churchbuilding in New Harmony."
