Westfield Spring Fling SetFor Sunday in Downtown
WESTFIELD — The 20th annualGreater Westfield Area Chamber ofCommerce’s Spring Fling will be heldon Sunday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 5p.m. (rain or shine) in downtownWestfield.
A fun filled day for all ages, the eventwill have many diverse food vendorsfrom the surrounding area, includ-ing many Westfield restaurants. Forthe kids, there will be rides and amultitude of fun activities to en-gage them for the entire day.
Be sure to arrive early, as manyvendors have giveaways during thefirst few hours. The event will fea-ture 300 local merchants, 20 foodbooths and the stores of Westfieldwill be open for business as well.Admission is free.
The following streets will beclosed to vehicular traffic on Sun-day morning starting at 6 a.m.: EastBroad Street from North Avenue toCentral Avenue; Quimby Street, ElmStreet from North Avenue to the
Texaco Station and Prospect Streetfrom North Avenue to Ferris Place.
Parking is prohibited on thestreets in the Spring Fling area allday Sunday. Downtown businessesin the area should advise employ-ees to park in the South AvenueTrain Station lot for the day. Down-town residents are reminded to parkin municipal lots, out of the SpringFling area. Pets, skateboarding, androller blading are prohibited in theSpring Fling area. This rule is forthe safety of attendees of all ages,and also for the safety of the ani-mals. Spring Fling attendees areencouraged to park in the SouthAvenue train station parking lot.This will provide the closest park-ing to the activity area, with easyaccess to North Avenue through theconvenient underpass at theWestfield Train Station.

WESTFIELD – The Friends of NewJersey Festival Orchestra, formerly theWestfield Symphony Orchestra, willfeature a new construction shingle-stylehome located in one of the Westfield’sprimary neighborhoods at its “Tour ofNotable Homes” to be held Saturday,May 10, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Jennifer Colamedici, who chairs theevent, states that the home, near thedowntown, is designed for relaxed,congenial, suburban living. It stands onnearly an acre that was once a cherryfarm and provides almost 10,000 squarefeet of remarkable living space.
“Starting at curbside the home isvery picturesque,” Mrs. Colamedicistated. “There is a stately covered porch,supported by columns, that compli-ments the front entrance. Inspired bythe past, to the rear, its owners reviveda two-story barn to serve as a three-cargarage, wood shop and outdoor poolhouse. There is a striking deck, pooland outdoor kitchen.”
Continuing the description of thehome, Alicia Barker, Friends’ presi-dent, said, “A gallery stretches the en-tire depth of the main floor with variousrooms welcoming visitors to the leftand right through arched doorways.
The music room is home to an acousticgrand piano. A spacious dining roomoffers plenty of space for large dinnerparties warmed by a fireplace.” Ac-cording to the committee members ofthe tour will be “entranced” by anadjacent service pantry that includes abarbeque, wet bar and dishwasher. Theysay that cooks will be entranced by themain kitchen that is equipped with astainless steel professional stove. Gran-ite counter tops measure three inchesthick. Adjacent to the kitchen is a sprawl-ing entertainment center where a chest-nut timber serves as the fireplace mantle.
This is a “smart house” with exten-sive technology to operate electronicamenities and provide security surveil-lance. The committee urges membersof the community to participate in thetour to see many more features in thishome which the hostesses term as “fabu-lous.”

WF Community ConcertBand Seeks Members
WESTFIELD — The WestfieldCommunity Concert Band, now inits 102nd concert season, invitesexperienced area musicians onwoodwind, brass and percussion tojoin the band for its upcoming Sum-mer Concert Series in June and July.
Dr. Thomas Connors, now in his10th season as music director, statedthat the band often experiences theaddition of many qualified highschool and college musicians, aswell as music educators during thespring and summer months.
“Student musicians and musiceducators often seek an outlet tomaintain their musicianship andenjoy the company of other musi-cians during those months whenthey are not otherwise in school orteaching”, says Dr. Connors. “TheWestfield Community ConcertBand provides an excellent venuefor student and music educators toperform a wide variety of band lit-erature for an appreciative audi-ence.”
The band will again be partici-pating in the Scotch Plains-Fan-wood Memorial Eve Concert onSunday, May 25, at the FanwoodTrain Station. The band will also befeatured in the Westfield and ScotchPlains Memorial Day Parades.
The band will conclude its spring/summer concert season with itsSummer Concert Series on Thurs-day evenings, June 26, July 3, 10and 17, in Westfield’s MinowaskinPark. The band has been perform-ing its annual summer concerts inMindowaskin Park since 1918 whenthe park opened.
The band rehearses Wednesdayevenings from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. inthe community room located in theWestfield Municipal Building, 425East Broad Street and performsthroughout the year.
