DOZENS OF PROJECTS AND RESEARCH LINES ABOUT THE IMPROVEMENT OF ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS
According with other countries experience, these technologies improve the conditions for sustainability and quality of buildings sensitively :.- The weight of the construction is reduced by up to 80%, with which savings are assumed.- The new materials necessary are reduced by 43% Greater sustainability..- The amount of water used in the construction is negligible..- The waste generated is a tenth that of traditional construction..- The energy involved in the materials is reduced by 33%.- The recycling of the materials is multiplied by nine.- The energy necessary for the construction is reduced by 32%.- The energy necessary for the transport of the materials is reduced by 70%.- 70% of the cost of the work comes from the factory, with qualified operators, whichassumes quality and safety..- The labor costs of the “in situ” assembly are reduced by 75%.- The construction period is reduced by 60%, with the consequent reduction in costs estimated at more than 9%..- The material cost of the work currently exceeds between 10 and 15% of the costs of traditional construction.

As part of the UPM Commitment, and highly supported by the Spanish government , UPM has participated in three editions of the SOLAR DECATHLON COMPETITION.
UPM Magic Box, 2005 UPM Casa Solar, 2007 UPM Casa Black&White
As a result from the 2007 UPM participation, the Spanish Minister of Housing and the Department of Energy of the United States of America signed off a Memorandum of Understanding, to create and develop the SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE COMPETITION, to be held in madrid in the years 2010 and 2012.

SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE PROJECTVALUES
OBJECTIVES OF THE SOLAR DECATHLON EUROPE
1. TO GENERATE knowledge on the industrialization and sustainability of the houses, bringing about suitable scientific benefits as well as the dissemination of the knowledge.
2. TO MAKE both students and the general public aware of environmental and sustainability issues, especially in the responsible use of energy and natural resources, promoting the use of the renewable energies, taking advantage of the high media impact.
