Cosmetics in the 20st Century
• During the early years of the 20th century, makeup became fashionable in the United States of America and Europe.
• The movie industry in Hollywood and ballet stars influenced the development of makeup.
Early 1900s and cosmetics
• 1904- Max Factor began selling makeup to movie stars that did not cake or crack in Los Angeles.
• 1907- Eugene Schueller, the founder of L’Orial, invented modern synthetic hair dye.
• 1914- T J Williams founded Maybelline, the specialized mascara company.
• 1915- Lipstick was introduced in cylindrical metal tubes
• 1922- The bobby pin was invented to hold hair back.
• 1932- Revlon, a nail polish company was founded by Charles and Joseph Revson, nail polish distributors, and Charles Lackman, a nail polish supplier.
• 1933- A new method for permanent waving of the hair without using electricity but chemicals was introduced.
• 1936- Schueller also invented sunscreen
• 1952- Roll –on deodorant was launched.
• 1952- Mascara wands introduced
• 1963- Revlon introduced first powder blush-on
• 1965- The first aerosol deodorant.
• After World War I, the flapper look came into fashion for the first time.
• This look was all about dark eyes, red lips, red nail polish and the suntan and it became popular as a fashion statement started by Coco Chanel.
