Time to Get Smarter The Second Annual India Energy Efficiency Forum, organised by TERI-BCSD (Business Council for Sustainable Development), India, Johnson Controls , The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and the World Environment Centre (WEC) and Media partner Everything About Green Buildings (EAGB), is poised to address energy efficiency trends that are changing the way we use our energy resources. Building on the first Forum in 2010, where we helped move efficiency to the top of corporate agenda, this year we intend to capitalise on the momentum behind energy efficiency and to help ensure that the policies, business models, technologies, manufacturing processes and communications drive energy efficiency in an intelligent way. Experts agree: efficiency is the way forward. The question is how to make efficiency accessible and interesting to a growing number of stakeholders, so that substantial energy, cost and carbon savings can be made available to markets and society.
Across the globe, energy efficiency is moving up the political agenda as legislators and the stakeholder community begins to realise the
potential of energy efficiency to reduce carbon emissions, increase energy security, and
create jobs. Energy markets, meanwhile, are transforming and integrating energy efficiency
as a valuable resource alongside traditional energy sources.
About the Forum Energy is the key driver of economic growth and with accelerated industrialization and urbanization, India has experienced an increase in the overall energy demand. With a population of more than one million, the country ranks sixth in the world in terms of total energy consumption. In order to meet its growth aspirations, long-term availability of energy, from sources that are affordable, accessible and environmentally-friendly, is highly crucial to the country.
In India, energy efficiency is increasingly seen as a viable option that is cost competitive, supplemental and environmentally sound. However, an integrated and coordinated approach for technological improvements, policy measures and institutional development is essential to improve energy efficiency in various sectors of the economy. The first step towards building this approach is to understand the concept, identify the issues and challenges involved and thereafter arrive at solutions.
India has already embarked upon its journey towards a sustainable future. Efforts are being made and mechanisms are being developed towards establishing institutional and legal structures to implement energy efficiency programs in the country. Mandatory energy audits in energy intensive industries, labeling and standardization of appliances and energy conservation in buildings, are all bringing energy efficiency to the national agenda.
TERI-BCSD acknowledging the need to institutionalize reforms has been supporting its member companies reaffirm their commitment by organizing “India Energy Efficiency Forum” (IEEF) in association with BEE, World Environment Centre (WEC) and Johnson Controls. The forum brings together leaders of government, business and Civil Society to discuss and identify barriers to energy efficient practices and to highlight opportunities for energy efficiency in India.
Encouraged by the response from government and industry, IEEF has now become an annual event. This year, in the light of recent developments i.e. PAT (Perform Achieve Trade) scheme under NMEEE (National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency) and the well established ECBC (Energy Conservation Building Code) and Star Labeling.
In an attempt to promote energy efficiency in the residential and commercial areas the IEEF would encourage discussions and deliberations on issues related to corporate practices on energy management, performance contracting, energy efficiency indicators, standards and labeling, Sustainable Habitats - trends in commercial buildings potential for energy efficiency. Further, tackling the agenda of energy efficiency in energy intensive large industries the Forum will approach issues emerging out of PAT, innovative financing bridges energy efficiency barriers, technology options to achieve ‘Reduction Targets’, Eco Innovation, promoting Energy Efficiency.
The Forum is a high-profile gathering of high profile through leaders, change leaders and corporate heads to share their vision and innovation.
Working Session I: Key Enablers of Energy EfficiencyThe session will address large industries in India identified by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) introduced by the Government of India under the NMEEE (National Mission on Enhancing Energy Efficiency) of NAPCC (National Action Plan on Climate Change) as “Designated consumers”. The identified companies need to report on their annual energy consumption and their efforts on energy conservation through an on-line reporting system called e-filing. Corporate India has increasingly recognized the role played by energy efficiency and sustainability in reducing operating costs, enhancing reputation, motivating employees, attracting customers and stimulating investments. With India focused on growing its economy in a sustainable manner and also poised to play a key leadership role in driving global efforts to combat climate change, India Energy Efficiency Indicator (EEI) study conducted since 2009 by Johnson Controls assumes great significance The survey is conducted by the Johnson Controls Institute for Building Efficiency, initiative of Johnson Controls that provides information and analysis of technologies, policies, and practices for efficient, high performance buildings and smart energy systems around the world. Panel Discussion:Innovative Financing Bridges for Energy
Efficient TomorrowThere is a huge potential for energy efficiency markets, supported strongly by the Indian government. However, the markets have failed to materialize due to many barriers - finance being one of them. The session will delve into the reasons, for these failures together with highlighting the innovative financing mechanisms, which have the potential to unlock the energy efficiency opportunities in India. The panel will also discuss alternative financing mechanism designed to accelerate investment in cost effective energy conservation measures and performance contracting.
