Ridgeons Forest Products
Ridgeons Timber and Builders Merchants first started trading with the sale and distribution of timber back in 1911. A century on, timber remains a fundamental part of the business. Continual investment keeps Ridgeons at the very forefront of the industry. This included a new modern timber mill and increased warehousing at Ridgeons Forest Products, Herringswell.
With a dedicated Forest Products team, working
in partnership with selected suppliers we are able
to maintain a very high standard of quality and
consistency. Stockholding and in-house timber
processing takes place at the purpose built 12 acre
Ridgeons Forest Products site at Herringswell.
Ridgeons offer over 200 planed and moulded
sections including skirtings, architraves, matchings
and floorings, precision machined by our own
highly trained staff. Also stocked is a range of
MDF mouldings, sawn joinery, garden landscaping,
decking and fencing timbers. Carcassing ex-stock
range includes Ridgeons structural joists and studs,
dry strength graded, machine regularised with
corners eased.
Ridgeons structural joists and general constructional
carcassing sizes are also available preservative
treated ‘off the shelf’ for collection or delivery.

In many instances using certified timber is now a legal requirement.New Homes
Using Chain of Custody (CoC) certified timber products
helps you earn material points under the Code for
Sustainable Homes Scheme and Ecohomes/BREEAM
Environmental rating systems.
Public Sector Work
Contractors or subcontractors carrying out new build or
maintenance work to public buildings, government
projects, NHS, National Trust, etc. must ensure they
comply with the procurement requirements relating to
the use of timber products.
DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT
Check if certified timber products are required
IF YES
Contact your local branch to check that the timber products you require are available CoC certified.
IF YES
Clearly state on your order and/or quote that CoC certified timber is required. This will not only ensure that CoC certified timber products are supplied, but will also ensure that resultant delivery notes, invoices and any accompanying paperwork clearly identify the products as certified. It is not possible to achieve CoC retrospectively.

What is Chain of Custody and what does it mean to our Customers?
Chain of Custody tracks and records the journey of the tree from the forest where it grew, through its processing procedures and then onwards to our depots and ultimately to our customers.

To be sure you are obtaining chain of custody product from us it is essential that you state this at the time of order. This will ensure the correct paperwork is generated and that your invoice conforms to chain of custody requirements.
Please be aware that if you are then supplying on chain of custody product you will require your own chain of custody certification to enable you to do so.

This range of products is machined from original imported
“Unsorted” joinery quality SIDEBOARDS (refer to diagram
on page 12) also known in the trade as “Best” joinery.
SIDEBOARDS are characteristically more stable than similar
size sections cut from the middle of the log. In addition,
knots, where present will generally be sound and small
in size.
Stability is further improved since products machined (for
example) from 25mm thick SIDEBOARDS finish 1.5mm
thicker at 20.5mm whereas one produced by sawing 2ex
50mm after machining would finish at 19mm.
• Machined products produced from SIDEBOARDS are
less prone to movement such as shake, splitting or
cupping, therefore preparation time is reduced prior to
applying decorative finish
• Appearance is more pleasing to the eye
• Particularly suitable for clear or stain finish

Still trying to match up your moulding without success? Do not despair. Make Ridgeons your first choice for all your machined Timber Special needs.
With continued investment at our 12 acre Forest Products Division we are able to offer machining to virtually any customer specific pattern/profile, in Scandinavian softwoods, other specialist softwoods, or even in hardwood. Our highly skilled machinists and experienced Tool Room Technicians ensure that a high quality product is achieved using state of the art milling machines that produce an extremely accurate and consistent range of products with a superb finish. This includes our standard range of products (pages 16 - 22).
Other bespoke/special services are available via our Forest Products Division these include the following:-• Preservative Treatment (Celcure {Green} or Protim {Clear}) of our Stock Softwood PAR and Mouldings. (see page 12-22)
• Cross-cutting to length.
• Trenching of Doorset Heads.
• Fire Retardant Treatments. (see page 65)
• White Priming.
• Black Base Coating.
• Picking of Sawn Joinery.
1) The customer supplies, via their local branch, a drawing or sample of the product they are looking for. If it is a sample that has been supplied consideration needs to be taken to whether this has shrunk due to age/weathering etc.
2) Our Tool Room Technicians produce a detailed drawing from the original drawing/sample, this then needs to be approved by the customer before production commences, ensuring that our interpretation of the drawing/sample is correct.
4) Finally the profile that has been produced is sent to the customer via their local branch.
A. Straight Knife Grinder.
B. Profile Grinder.
C. Cutter Block.
D. Cutter.
E. Template.
F. Machined Profile.
The process for producing specials usually follows the following path:-
3) From the approved drawing the Tool Room Technicians produce templates out of laminated plastic using a specialised machine. These templates are used in a profile grinder (a larger version of the one used by key cutters when making duplicates) to turn blank cutter steel in to profiled cutters to produce the product. There is also a straight knife grinder to sharpen cutters that are predominately used for Planed All Round products (PAR).

With timber being increasingly specified as the material of choice for exterior and interior cladding, we would like to show you some of the great range that Ridgeonscan offer.
Appearance
Not only does it look good, enhancing the external appearance of any building, it makes it more interesting and pleasing to the eye. The versatility of timber means it can be produced to almost any requirement. With ageing and weathering, timber gradually changes colour to an attractive silver-grey. Alternatively it can be treated or stained to individual taste.
Durability
Some hardwoods and softwoods such as Western Red Cedar, Larch and Douglas Fir are naturally resistant to decay. Less durable species such as European Redwood can be preservative treated to prolong life in service.
Performance
Along with durability and a long service life, timber cladding’s natural properties offer improved acoustic and thermal conductivity performance.
Ridgeons offers a range of timber cladding providing an attractive, versatile and durable external finish. With its excellent environmental credentials timber is increasingly becoming first choice for cladding.

The company continues to work with all suppliers with the aim of expanding this portfolio, and is fully committed to the Responsible Purchasing Policy.
Timber cladding is attractive, versatile, environmentally friendly, allows for great creativity, flexible in design and can be used for any scale of project.

Western Red Cedar Cladding(Thuja plicata)
Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to moisture,
decay and insect damage. Along with its workability,
versatility and resistance to warping, this makes it an
ideal timber for outdoor applications without the need
for preservative treatments.
Western Red Cedar’s rich warm colour and
texture gives any building, inside or out, a touch
of individuality that blends naturally with the
environment.
With ageing and weathering Cedar gradually changes
colour to an attractive silver-grey. Alternatively it can
be treated or stained to individual taste.
A Guide to Western Red CedarOne of the prominent features of western red cedar is
its colour variability ranging from cream through salmon
pink to dark chocolate brown and all shades inbetween,
which will be present to greater or lesser extent in all
batches.
Western Red Cedar is Available in Two GradesThe first is known as No.2 Clear & Better which describes
the top grade exported from Canada and excludes
sapwood, large loose and soft knots, shakes
and wane.
The second is known as No.2 Clear & Better with 15% No.4
of which 15% can contain a higher knot content with larger
softer and dead knots, you may also have larger surface
checks (face splits), wane and sapwood.
Other defects eg. Worm holes are allowed to some degree.
Specifying the Correct GradeAs a general rule of thumb the following criteria should be
observed.
No.2 Clear & Better
Specify this grade if you intend to use specific lengths
without joints and you do not wish to do any significant
defecting. Eg 100/3.0m lengths used in 3.0m lengths.
No.2 Clear & Better (Allowing Max 15% No.4)
Specify this grade if you intend to use random lengths with
random joints in the length and are prepared to defect on
site to achieve a clear or nearly clear appearance. Eg 1000
linier metres supplied in random lengths 1.82-4.2 metres
long. These guidelines include extracts from BS1186-3 now
being quoted as a benchmark quality for cladding in the UK.
Moisture ContentWestern Red Cedar is imported either:
• Kiln Dried (16% Ave with wet spots is suppliers spec)
• Green (no specific moisture content)
• Warning: You may also be offered Air Dried this will
have been imported Green and termed Air Dried because
it has been held in stock for a while. If the term Air Dried
is specified be sure to ask for a defined moisture content.
Otherwise you may as well specify Green.
FinishingThis product will last for many years without applying
surface treatment. The natural effect of exposure to
moisture and ultraviolet light can however cause the natural
colour of timber to fade to a grey colour, surface cracking
and the potential for algae growth.
To prevent ultraviolet degradation it is necessary to include
a pigment into the surface finish which may be translucent
or opaque, although an opaque finish will provide the best
protection.
Cedar ShinglesAnother popular stock item is Cedar Shingles. With their
extremely light weight and low thermal conductivity they
make and ideal roofing and cladding material.

Siberian Larch(Larix sibirica)
Siberian Larch visually is golden yellow in colour and
because it is naturally slow grown, has tight growth rings
combined with a strong figure pattern. Unlike British Larch
(Larix European) that is much faster grown, any knots as
they occur in Siberian Larch tends to be light grey in colour
and are much less likely to fall out after drying and machining.
Siberian Larch is very resinous and extremely hard, making
it one of the toughest and most durable softwoods in the
world. Therefore there is no need for further treatment.
Ideal for use as cladding on extremely exposed elevations
or where impact damage may occur, eg. schools, public
buildings, shopping areas, etc.
GradingSiberian Larch is available in three quality grades with the
two most common being:
• Unsorted (1st – 3rd grades) – used where a very
clean contemporary appearance is required, does
have a few relatively small tight knots.
• Sawfalling (1st – 4th grades) – because of the
inclusion of 4th grades the frequency of knots
and other defects may increase, as a result this
could lead to some selection and defect cutting to
take place on site.
FinishingThis product will last for years without applying surface
treatments. The natural effect of exposure to moisture and
ultraviolet light can, however, cause the natural colour of
the timber to fade to a grey colour, surface cracking and the
potential for algae growth.
To prevent ultraviolet degradation it is necessary to include
a pigment into the surface finish which may be translucent
or opaque, although an opaque finish will provide the best
protection.

ThermowoodThermoWood® is an exciting product that has not just
been heat treated but ‘themally modified’ by being
put through a total integrated process which enables
Scandinavian softwoods such as Redwood (Pinus
sylvestris) to be used in areas requiring a service life of
at least 30 years.
Changes that occur during the heat treatment progress
include:
• Moisture content reduced by up to 50%
• Timber becomes darker
• Improved resistance to rot
• Resin removed
• Improved weather resistance
• Stability and durability improves
ThermoWood® is sourced from well managed and
sustainable forests and the heat treatment requires no
chemical additives.

We import and stock large volumes of sawn joinery softwoods, principally from Scandinavia. These high quality, slow grown timbers are ideal for planing and machining for a vast number of end uses.We source from mills that are able to provide us with
material that is consistently graded in order to maintain
our reputation for quality. This is important when
supplying joinery in its sawn state. A number of our
branches carry a representative stock to satisfy the
needs of our customers. Our main group stockholding
is stored undercover at our Forest Products operation,
from where it is order picked and distributed through
our branch network.
Call us with your requirements for split or full pack
quantities for:-
• Unsorted Redwood• Fifths Redwood• Specialist Redwood Grades o Heartfree o Greensplit/Centre free o Sawfalling• Unsorted Whitewood• Sawfalling Whitewood
We stock most sizes from 19 x 100mm unsorted
sideboards up to 100 x 225mm. Please refer to the table
on the next page for the full range of sizes available.
UPM+ Special Sawn Joinery Solutions - UPM+ P
From the family of UPM+ products a range of speciality
sawn and kilned sections produced from top grade
unsorted quality redwood ‘A’ logs. Special cutting
techniques are used to produce component size
sections which are kiln dried at the final dimension
(green splitting). This provides a more stable end
product, hence minimising bow, shake and twist. By
removing the centre of the log (Centre Free), heart and
pith are greatly reduced.
Main advantages are:
• Reduced wastage
• Cost savings
• Improved cash flow
• Environmental
All this adds up to a product that is cost effective
and the perfect solution to interest manufacturers
of windows and door frames, doors, stairs, gates,
furniture, etc.
Green Split/Centre Free timber is available from
Ridgeons in the following sizes:

Sawn HardwoodsAt Ridgeons we have access to a vast selection of hardwoods from around the world. Whether it’s Oak for skirting, Balau for decking or Keruing for a wagon base, we can offer sawn material or product machined to profile.
Oak Beams & PostsAvailable as Constructional Grade, D30/D40 Graded,
and Ungraded, in sizes up to 350 x 350mm for Air Dried
Oak or 500 x 500mm for Fresh Sawn (Green) Oak, both
in lengths up to 12.0 metres. It is generally supplied
rough sawn, however, it may also be available as ‘Fine
Sawn’ or Planed All Round. Please contact your local
branch with your requirements.
Fresh Sawn OakSimply put this is oak that has been freshly cut from a
tree that has been felled in the last 3-6 months. It will
have a high moisture content and as such there will be
a high probability that it will be subject to movement/
splits/shakes/distortion during its drying out process.
These can be exacerbated by rapid drying, for example
by the oak being put into a room that has the central
heating turned on. Oak has been historically used in
the traditional construction of stately homes, period
dwellings and barns. Fresh Sawn Oak can be utilised
in a variety of ways ranging from being a part of the
construction of the building, or to create pergolas and
other garden/landscaping projects, or as posts/sleepers.
Air Dried OakThis is Fresh Sawn Oak that has been sticked (spaced
every layer to permit airflow) and allowed to dry
relatively slowly (at an approximate rate of 25-40mm
in depth all the way round per year), this is dependant
upon where the oak, that is being dried, has been
stored and the prevailing conditions (especially if stored
exposed to the elements). It must be noted that oak
will dry to about 75mm in depth all the way round,
this means that larger sectional sizes may still be ‘Fresh
Sawn’ at the centre. The advantage of Air Dried over
Fresh Sawn is they will be more stable and less likely
to be subject to movement/splits/shakes/distortion,
especially if used internally. So in conclusion Air Dried
oak tends to lend itself better to being used in internal
situations compared to Fresh Sawn oak and provides
a more stable product, and Air Dried Oak can also be
used externally.

Glulam BeamsToday glulam is used in many varied types of construction, particularly in leisure buildings and schools, and is now becoming a popular material used in churches, play grounds, bridge building, multi storey car parks and electricity masts.
Wood has well known qualities which are a characterisic of glulam and makes it just as real, warm and inviting as the wood it is manufactured from.
In construction glulam is used for its strength and character building versatility, it can be produced in individual shapes; straight, curved, cranked pre-chambered and portal frames, large or small.
Cross Laminated Timber (CLT)Cross laminated timber is a two-way spanning timber panel that is manufactured similar to Glulam Beams. However, it can be used to produce walls, roof and floor panels. The layers of timber (generally Spruce/European Whitewood) used to produce the panels are alternately laid at 90° over each other, creating panels up to 24m in length, 340mm thick and 2950mm in width. Due to this manufacturing process it is a stable product having little shrinkage or movement after manufacture.
This product offers an entirely new way to look at load transfer and has a proven history of multi-storey building capability, currently up to 9 storeys in the UK. It also has the ability to produce long spans for floors. This product helps to reduce construction time, thus saving money and maximising efficiency on site. Please contact your nearest branch with your requirements.

Ridgeons operates its own timberpreservation plants under licence at itsForest Products operation at Herringswell.
This enables us to maintain our commitment to providing timber preservative treated off the shelf from our comprehensive carcassing ex stock range. In addition we have the flexibility to treat non-stock
items to order and match the correct treatment system to end-use.
Celcurised TimberIs the name given to timber that has been preserved with a Celcure product from Koppers which contain copper and an organic co-biocide. This high-pressure preservative treatment system has been commercially used for more than a decade in locations throughout Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. It can be used to treat timber from Use Class 1 to 4.
• Effective protection against the threat of wood-boring insects and fungal decay.• Naturewood products are durable and designed for outdoor construction. Suitable for external applications both in-ground contact and out of ground contact (subject to Use Class).• Ideal for structural timber, garden furniture, fencing, decking, playground equipment and landscaping structures such as pergolas. • Can be painted or stained by following manufacturers recommendations.• Complies with European standards.
Celcurised Timber will initially have an even green appearance, this will weather to a natural honey brown colour before finally fading to a driftwood grey after long term exposure to the sun.
Protim Clearchoiceis the brand name for wood treated under low pressure with a water based preservative.
Can be used to treat timber from Use Class 1 to 3,
• Effective protection against the threat of wood-boring insects and fungal decay.• Can be painted or stained by following manufacturers recommendations.• Suitable for use in internal and external construction projects that are above DPC/ground level. When using Protim Clearchoice in external applications it will need to be coated with a suitable external coating.• Ideal for internal and external joinery, claddings, roof timbers and timber framing.• Will not change the colour or appearance of wood.
In addition to the treatment systemsavailable from our Forest Products operation.Ridgeons also has access to a state of theart treatment plant that is close to our ownterminal operation at Ipswich.
Remember, any surface exposed by drilling, cutting and working timber in any way mustbe retreated with a cut end preservative.

The timber when subjected to fire causes the chemicals in the treatment to create a layer of char on the surface of the timber this in turn slows down the rate of combustion reducing the likelihood of ignition, the rate of the surface spread of flames and the amount of heat released. This should then provide an increased time for escape from a burning building and for the fire brigade to arrive.

Ridgeons has been supplying an extensive range of panel products for many years. We hold comprehensive stocks including plywoods, MDF, chipboards, OSB, hardboards, and decorative veneered boards. Many other types and grades of boards are available to order.
Plywood Specifications
Fortunately, there are only two material components in
plywood: wood & glue. How these components interact
will ultimately define how the plywood performs. These
two standards provide a relatively straightforward way of
classifying the outcome.
EN 314-2:1993 Plywood - Bonding QualityClassifies plywood by bonding quality only and gives rise
to 3 bond classes dependent upon the intended end use.
Bonding quality is determined by the adhesive type and
core veneer quality (physical defects such as
knot holes and splits):
(Bond) Class I: suitable for dry interior use only.
(Bond) Class II: suitable for use in humid areas or
exposure to occasional wetting.
(Bond) Class III: suitable for unprotected exterior
use or exposure to frequent wetting.
EN 636: 2003, Plywood - Specifications
Classifies plywood by taking into account the bond
quality and the biological durability of the wood species
used in the plywood:
(Specification) Class I: suitable for dry interior use only.
(Specification) Class II: suitable for use in humid areas
or exposure to occasional wetting.
(Specification) Class III: suitable for unprotected exterior
use or exposure to wetting.
Our knowledgeable staff can offer you expert advice
when selecting the ideal panel product for your requirements.
