Go out on every fly ball
• If U1 or U3 goes out on a fly ball the opposing wing enters the infield and we are back to two man.
• If you go out…stay out.
4
Fly Ball Jurisdiction
• No runners…. U1 has CF in and back…. he is the QB…this is contrary to TASO manual.
• Partial V when inside, U3 inside, has CF in U1 has CF back.
• No reason why PL ump cannot get eyes on fly balls also.
6
Positioning
• Deep and shallow A, B, C, D and why.
• Runner on first…U1 in shallow A, U3 in deep B.
• Runner on Second with no runner on 1st…U1 in Deep B, U3 in D.
• Anytime there are two outs…. U1 in A.
7
Communication
• PL initiates all signals – be looking for them! U3 then U1.
• Rotation…runner at second tag up…. always point where you are going.
8
Fill in the hole
• PL is the general out there…. be verbal, especially if a hole needs to be filled.
• PL is probably going to be the one filling in.
10
U1
• Basic positioning in A and pickoff (and back pick from catcher).
• Stay outside to view touch on base hits do not pivot (unless slide is on).
• Also check tag ups from outside.• Taking plays at first from B:– Ground ball to F4, first move toward
beginning of 45' line.– Ground ball to F5 or F6, move
toward back edge of infield.
11
U1
• In A with two outs…this is advanced and will be on crew chief.
• U1 is the QB.• Slide... Multiple runners.• Runners on first and second..loaded.• Slide move and responsibilities.• What is your move with runner on
3rd, <2out, and U3 goes out?• Runner on 1st, fly ball to LF, U1 has
tag-up at 1st (U3 is inside, so no need to go in).
12
U3
• You are the guy who needs to pause, read, and react so you can read what U1 does on fly balls in the middle.
• Runner on first only…you are in B.• Runners on 1st & 3rd, you are in C.• Double play ball:– U3 has the force at 2nd and any
interference on continuation.– MAKE SURE YOU DON’T FOLLOW THE
BALL TO FIRST– See the ball into the glove…get to that
side!
13
Plate Umpire
• PL guy has a lot to remember.• Partners stay in…one thing.• Partners go out…another.• Make sure you know where to be when
reverting to 2-man, touches and such.• Runner on first, U1 goes out, PL has tag
up at first.• Runners in scoring position, PL first move
is back.• Runner on 3rd, U3 goes out, line up tag.• Do not get too far from plate when lining
up tag.• Follow your wing if he goes out (in most
cases).

• Someone goes out– Revert to three man.
52
Stay with Basics
• Slide with multiple runners:– Only if a wing goes out!!!• U2 will slide toward wing going out.U3 goes out:
U2 slides to third.U1 slide in to cover 1st and 2nd.
U2 goes out:U2 slides to cover 1st and 2nd.
U3 stays outside and has third.
Don’t over think this.
53
Plate Umpire
• No runners:– Follow wing going out.
• Runner on first– Follow U1 if he goes out.– Follow U3 if he goes out.
54
Plate Umpire
• Runner on Second:– U1 goes out, follow him, don’t over
commit.– U3 goes out, follow him, take
runner to third.• Take plays at third outside.

• Multiple runners:– U1 goes out:
» Slide to him and cover 1st and 2nd.– U3 goes out:
» Slide to him and cover 3rd (only).
57
U3
• Always in D.• Take plays at third from the outside.• U2 inside:
– Fly balls with center fielder moving to you and all the way to the left field line are yours.
• Runner on First and Second:– U1 goes out:
• So what..you have third base (outside).
• Multiple Runners:– Slide when U1 Goes out:
• So what..you have third base (outside).
