G r e a t e r P h o e n i x O v e r v i e w Located in the northeastern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, the City of Phoenix is the largest city in Arizona and the sixth largest city in the nation. The Phoenix economy is vibrant and strong, attracting many new businesses and people, and making Phoenix the anchor of a
metropolitan area that has grown incredibly in the last fifteen years. Its population is projected to grow at more than twice the national rate for the next couple of decades. The City of Phoenix is served by Interstate 10 which leads into Phoenix from Los Angeles, and continues southeast through the city and on to Tucson and El Paso and Interstate 17 which provides a north/south route through the city and is a key industrial corridor. Phoenix has also developed an extensive urban freeway network that includes approximately 155 miles of roadway that greatly enhances accessibility within the urban area. The major components of the system include Loop 101 that encircles the City of Phoenix, and Loop 202 that provides a route from Downtown around the perimeter of the southeast part of the metro area. Phoenix has a large and diverse economy. Transportation, wholesale trade, high-technology manufacturing, back-office insurance and financial operations, and tourism are all drivers of the economy. Employment has increased over 100 percent in the
Greater Phoenix area over the past 20 years, resulting in a large and diverse labor pool. Phoenix is also projected to be the 2nd largest “job engine” in the U.S. through 2025, according to Newsweek Magazine. Increases in employment are largely due to the area’s exceptional quality of life, which attracts people and companies from around the world. The cost of living index for Phoenix is only 88 (U.S. average is 100), an especially interesting score given that the cost of living tends to increase proportionally with population size. The low cost of housing accounts for most of the lower overall cost of living score. The Phoenix region boasts almost 300 days of sunshine annually, low humidity and very mild winters. In addition to hiking, camping and boating, sports enthusiasts can enjoy one of the most complete lineups of major league teams found in any city, including teams in all four major professional sports leagues. The city also has more than 200 golf courses and over 1,000 tennis courts.
