The 20th Annual Tobyhanna Millpond
#1 Ice Harvest will take place on Saturday,
January 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Millpond
#1 in Tobyhanna. The annual event celebrates
the historic practice of ice harvesting through
reenactments and working demonstrations.
Organizer Bill Leonard Jr., whose father
worked in the industry and conceived the idea
for the modern day hauls, explains that ice
harvesting was once an important trade in the
Poconos. “Millpond #1 has been used for ice
harvesting since the late 1800s,” he says.
In the days before electric refrigerators,
natural ice was used to preserve food in
household iceboxes. Much of the ice distributed
along the east coast was harvested from ponds
and lakes in the Poconos.
In 1907, Leonard explains, the Pocono
Mountain Ice Company built a 60,000 ton capacity ice house on Millpond #1. Each winter, when the ice on the
water grew to 12 inches thick, the fi rst of the season’s two or three “crops” were harvested. Workers used saws,
plows, hooks, and conveyors to move blocks from the water to the insulated ice house. The massive “ice cakes”
were then covered with straw and stored or shipped out by railcar for domestic use.
The Annual Ice Harvest at Millpond #1 honors this historic practice. Each year, dozens of volunteers assemble
to recreate the harvests and hundreds turn out to observe the action. Antique equipment is used to cut and extract
the ice and horses are used to pull the
blocks up restored wooden ramps and into
the ice house.
Says Leonard of the event, “It is a
chance for people to see some local history
and see the hard work folks used to endure
back a century ago.”
All are welcome at this celebrated
event. The Coolbaugh Township Historical
Association, headquartered nearby, will
offer complimentary museum tours and
refreshments from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Should conditions be unfavorable on
January 19, the event will be rescheduled
for Saturday, February 16. For updates and
additional information, call the Tobyhanna
Millpond Ice Harvest Hotline at (570) 894-
8205. Tobyhanna Millpond #1 is located
at 2071 (formerly 646) Lakeside Drive in
beautiful Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania.

Know the Skiers’ Responsibility Code The National Ski Areas Association suggests that all skiers consider the following:
THE SKIERS’ RESPONSIBILITY CODE
❆ Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
❆ People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
❆ You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.
❆ Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
❆ Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
❆ Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
