Page 1: Thermosetting Plastics & Thermoplastic Polymer

Thermosetting PlasticsThermosetting plastics can only be

set once. They are moulded into shape and cannot be recycled

easily.

ExamplesPolyester fibreglass systems, sheet moulding compounds and bulk moulding compounds

Duroplast, light but strong material, similar to Bakelite used for making car parts .

Bakelite, a phenol-formaldehyde resin used in

electrical insulators and plastic wares.

Methods of Moulding Include:Reactive injection molding (used for objects

such as milk bottle crates)

Extrusion molding (used for making pipes, threads

of fabric and insulation for electrical cables) Compression molding (used to shape most

thermosetting plastics) Spin casting (used for producing fishing lures

and jigs, gaming miniatures, figurines, emblems as

well as production and replacement parts)

ThermoplasticsA Thermoplastic material is a plastic material which can be repeatedly moulded by heating.

Another name for Thermoplastics is Thermoplastic Polymer. Thermoplastics become soft and mouldable

on heating. They can then be recast in different shapes and

cooled.

ExamplesPolyethylene, mainly used for packaging.

Methods of Moulding:One method of moulding Thermoplastics is using

a mould made from a material such as MDF, heating the Thermoplastic Polymer then using

Press Forming to create the shape needed.
