HIGH STREET - BRIDGE END TRAFFIC CALMING SCHEMESSUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION - SURVEY
Site 1High Street south end Back Lane junctionThis proposal was put forward by Lincolnshire County Council Highways in response toconcerns about the visibility of vehicles approaching from the north on the High Street byvehicles emerging from Back Lane There will no kerbing on south side The drains willhave to be repositioned
Cost - pound3000
Site 2High Street Manor FarmSpeed was judged to be a problem at this site The Road Traffic Group (RTG) first suggesteda raised platform but because buses object to these and would even discontinue its servicean alternative of Speed Cushions was proposed The same objections could be applied as tospeed humps as they cause traffic to slow down and then speed away
Cost - pound3500
Site 343 High Street the narrowest point on the High StreetLCC Highways originally proposed a build-out only on the east side of the road The RTGsuggested that there should be build-outs from both sides of the road with priority beingnorth to south Noise of vehicles stopping and starting could cause a nuisance to adjacentproperties
Cost - pound9000
Site 4Adjacent to 33 High StreetA completely new low pavement on the east side was suggested by the RTG The Highwaysengineer stated that it would need a very low kerb so as to give vehicles an escape route anda way of passing each other This lsquoChokersquo point may become a problem in the event of the A1being closed and traffic diverted on to the High Street
Cost - pound12000
Site 6High Street Alms HousesBuild-out was proposed after a raised platform was rejected by LCC Highways The sameproblems caused by traffic stopping and starting will occur
Cost - pound7000
Site 7Bridge EndThis proposal of a build-out was intended to slow traffic entering Colsterworth from the northIt was suggested that the 30 mph signs be moved further to the north The same problemscaused by traffic stopping and starting will occur
Cost - pound7500
Site 5High Street School LaneLCC proposed moving the road markings to give vehicles emerging from School Lane a betterview of traffic on the High Street

It all came flooding back when our guest speaker Sue Stephen-
son reminisced on her time in the Swinging Sixties The music the weather (especially 1963 with frosts week after week) dancing round handbags flower power miniskirts hot pants wiping off the make-up before going home Yes wersquod done it all and I thanked her for bringing back all those memories
Rosemary Bolongaro chairing the meeting welcomed mem-bers and three visitors before Bett Pope gave the update on Mary Cowleyrsquos progress
Womenrsquos Institute report
Twenty-eight members and friends enjoyed a wonderful
Christmas Lunch at the White Lion on Sunday 13th December and we thank Madeline and David for looking after us so well The meeting on the 14th was the AGM where we also had a good attend-ance The Chair Secretary and Treasurer all gave their reports for the year and the committee were re-elected for next year The constitution was adopted with no objections
A full programme of events was handed to members for 2010 and as we know what the outgoings will be it was decided that the membership fee should remain at pound7 per person plus pound150 per meeting and pound3 per visitor As things stand we will be making a slight loss by doing this but the club will subsidise it in the hope that we will get more people to join as members
A questionnaire was handed out which produced some good responses for the committee to work on and there was much discussion about fundraising One proposition is that we buy compost fertilisers and canes etc directly from the wholesalers and sell from a designated dis-tribution point to members We used to do this many years ago so it will be raised at the February meeting
After all this members were ready for sherry and mince pies while they had a go at the Guess the Baby competition the 15 lovely photographs caused much amusement the winner was Gil-
lian Burgoin who had seven an-swers correct The Flower of the Month competition results were announced and after Mary Cop-ley won on the night with a gor-geous lsquoFrecklesrsquo Clematis flower this meant we had a tie for first place so Mary took the Chairmanrsquos Trophy and Gillian Burgoin the Millington Cup Members each bought a raffle prize wrapped in Christmas paper in exchange for a free ticket so everybody went home with a surprise gift
On behalf of the committee I would like to thank you for your support over the past year and wish everybody a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Please let David have any Sutton Seed orders as soon as possible because there is no meeting in January Look forward to see-ing you all on 8th February when Geoff Espin will tell us about Wild Orchids of Europe Hopefully we wonrsquot be snowed in this time and subs will be due
Joanna Smith
Voting on the AGM resolutions had been completed and sent off to headquarters and newsletter orders were taken
The winner of the Waterways and Whereabouts quiz was an-nounced There were no all correct entries three tied with 78 points and the winner drawn from the three was Mrs R Blake-sley of Hanthorpe Many thanks to everyone who supported the Institute We would have liked to have seen more being returned even if they werenrsquot complete From nearly 100 sold only 11 were received for marking
We are to join Harlaxton WI on their coach when we attend the Spring Council Meeting at Spald-ing in March Pippa Greenwood is the main guest speaker Other events which County have lined up for us include a fabric box workshop a quiz evening Easter Larks (an evening of fun and games) and an Irish evening We heard that Anne Walters entry for the notelets competition hadnrsquot won - hard luck Anne but thanks for trying We have the Lincs Show schedule for any member to have a go at the competitions see me if you are interested
We are due to send a delegate to the 2010 AGM at Cardiff and were pleased when Jane volun-teered
The competition for a sleeved LP was won by yours truly with Bett Pope the runner-up Bett was on a winning streak winning the raffle and Dora was back this month to manning the sales ta-ble Thank you Dora for your help every month Festive nibbles prepared by the committee were served by Barbara Moore and her merry band of helpers
Our next meeting is on 21st
Colsterworth amp District Gardeners and Allotment Holders Association
dead together with the remains of a badger on the verge east of Twyford Wood entrance This is a danger spot for traffic Well-worn deer tracks can be seen coming from the wood and crossing the road and ditches into fields to the north
Birds which have been feast-ing in trees and bushes heavy with fruit are returning to our gardens as the cold weather closes in Several gardens have a visiting great spotted wood-pecker One was noted hang-ing from a nut feeder A grey wagtail provided entertain-ment as it walked on lily pads in a garden pond Fieldfare and redwing are both about along the lanes and disused railway lines We have almost come to take buzzard sightings for granted but eight of them circling on the thermals are an exceptional recordTo look for in January
Thank you for records from the Stamford Road There will be more of the bank vole seen there next month when there will be a good opportunity to add to mammal records from tracks trails and signs The dog fox screaming as it calls for a mate is something to lis-ten for in January It would be interesting also to record what is sheltering in ivy - and that would include insects spiders snails and woodlice Please continue to send your records as we piece together a better idea of the natural history of our parishes

The word December trans-lates as the tenth month be-
cause in the Roman calendar the year began with the vernal equinox in March Yule the old English name celebrated not the Christian Christmas period but the pagan winter solstice
After a mild autumn with the first snowdrops out in Colsterworth churchyard by 22nd November the first frosts were rapidly followed in mid-December by snow
The value of ivy was noted With f lowers l i n g e r i n g o n and berries rip-ening it pro-vided shelter for birds and lsquo m i n i b e a s t s rsquo alike
People have mixed feelings about ivy It is not true that it is a parasite nor does it stran-gle trees but as it scrambles
up it may cover its supporter rsquos leaves and break branches It can be good weath-er-proofing for damp walls but i t w i l l b l o c k drains and lift tiles It is part of the Christmas decorations but
old superstitions allowed it only in the hall Pagans be-lieved Bacchus the god of wine was hidden in its branches as a baby to protect him from Juno Garlands of ivy were hung on doors to show that good drink could be found there leading to the old saying ldquoa good wine needs no bushrdquo
In folk medicine ivy was a cure for drunkenness and an infusion was used for sore eyes Crushed leaves were applied to bruises while extracts were used to ease the pain of corns swollen joints and toothache More reliably other mammals treat ivy as a medicine This is why as a song from the 1940s says ldquoLittle lambs eat ivyrdquo
In addition to deer seen regu-larly in Tortoiseshell Wood there have been a number of reports on muntjak Six were seen north of the village and west of the Al and an-o t h e r o n e was found
January as late as it can be when we entertain ourselves with a social afternoon So if you fancy a nice relaxing af-ternoon why not join us in the Village Hall at 2 orsquoclock Visitors are always welcome
A reminder from the Treas-urer - subscriptions are due and newsletters that were ordered to be paid for
Oh nearly forgot there was no queue for tickets to see The Full Monty One member was heard to say ldquoSeen it all before I see it every nightrdquo Some folk have all the luck
Happy New Year to everyone see you on the 21st

The Village Hall Prize Draw
Our Prize Draw has been running successfully for a many years now and we recently put it on hold to give it a face-lift
The concept has now been re-designed while retaining the twin aims of giving funds to the hall and cash prizes to villagers
What we now need is someone to run the draw Ideally the volunteer would be involved in the setting up process
so that it can be tailored to suit them and incorporate any ideas they may have
Running it will involve organising the collecting of money and ticket sales supervising the draws and looking after the distribution of prize money
If you are interested please contact me on 01476 862039Mark Wesson
ChairmanVillage Hall Committee

Right thatrsquos another year done so it must be just the moment to fire off
ThankYous and HappyNewYears across our villages
They go out wrapped in kind thoughts to everyone who has helped with In Touch
First off therersquos the advertisers whose support pays our way
And then the contributors who de-spite my ability to mangle their words get dates wrong and even lose every-thing continue to keep my letterbox and inbox full
Irsquom grateful too for the flexible at-titude our printer has to the word ldquodeadlinerdquo because there are occasions when I take appalling liberties with his schedules
The splendid Liz and Eileen remain valiant in getting the finished product to the distributors in time
And then the distributors footslog to every front door in every village - thatrsquos over 750 letterboxes to trap their fingers in each month
The Parish Clerk and the Council must be included too because their underwriting of In Touch guarantees its continuation
Lastly you the readers remain in my sights ndash everyone elsersquos efforts are of little value without you all allowing us to take up your valuable time by read-ing the stuff and supporting the local businessesHappy New Year

Our next meeting is on 21st

dead together with the remains of a badger on the verge east of Twyford Wood entrance This is a danger spot for traffic Well-worn deer tracks can be seen coming from the wood and crossing the road and ditches into fields to the north

From the editor

Cost - pound250

Our next meeting is on 21st

dead together with the remains of a badger on the verge east of Twyford Wood entrance This is a danger spot for traffic Well-worn deer tracks can be seen coming from the wood and crossing the road and ditches into fields to the north

Our next meeting is on 21st

dead together with the remains of a badger on the verge east of Twyford Wood entrance This is a danger spot for traffic Well-worn deer tracks can be seen coming from the wood and crossing the road and ditches into fields to the north

The splendid Liz and Eileen remain valiant in getting the finished product to the distributors in time

The Parish Clerk and the Council must be included too because their underwriting of In Touch guarantees its continuation

dead together with the remains of a badger on the verge east of Twyford Wood entrance This is a danger spot for traffic Well-worn deer tracks can be seen coming from the wood and crossing the road and ditches into fields to the north
