Consensus Building
A process by which the parties seek unanimous agreement. It involves a good-faith effort by each stakeholder to meet the interests of each other. In today’s legislative environment, politics often trumps policy and public policy dispute resolution can assist lawmakers and regulators in reaching consensus and bring closure to a number of issues that have long been unresolved, while avoiding outside political pressure.
“Finding consensus through controversy.”

“My background reflects a time when folks would get together to resolve an issue or agree on something by dropping by the
house, leaning on the hood of a pickup truck for a chat, or going inside for coffee and a visit around the kitchen table. Typically, when we agreed on a course of action, a
handshake or a simple nod sealed the deal. Issues were resolved and commitments were
made around the kitchen table.”
