The ‘WAFFLE’ Issue 4: 14th May 2018
Our vision: We aim to improve the world, one Booyal student at a time, by challenging and
supporting every student to reach their absolute potential in learning and behaviour whilst
encouraging them to demonstrate an enthusiastic ‘can do’ attitude, care for each other,
contribute positively to the wider world, dream big, think ‘outside the box and have a healthy
dose of fun along the way!
Hello everyone,
Phew, what a term this one is rolling out to be. It seems that something out of the
ordinary has happened every week so far. Thankfully, other than this being a NAPLAN
week, it looks like things will be back on track for the rest of the term. Fingers crossed.
Remember, Term 2 is a week longer than ususal; 11 weeks in total.
At the end of this term we will farewell Mrs Hollier who is looking forward to retirement
after over 40 years teaching. She’s well and truly on the home straight now!
What has been happening?
Students respectfully participated in an ANZAC service at school. Several families
also marched and laid a wreath during the ceremony in Childers. Particular thanks to
Mrs Warren for taking the banner/hats and supervising the children since Mrs
Hollier and I could not attend this year. We were very proud of everyone.
Attachment(s): none this time!
Our 2018 focus is writing, fluency and problem solving.
Cross Country: Thanks to Givelda State School staff for organising this year’s Small Schools’
Cross Country Carnival. We had nearly full attendance and great support
from parents and friends, which was lovely to see. As always, everyone,
without fail…(even the little girl who commented that “I am just not
built for running!” ) tried their Booyal Best. It was heart-warming to
see great determination, sportsmanship and pride. Top stuff!
Our 2018 focus is writing, fluency and problem solving.
Clinton, Jayden, Leeroy, Mason and Mary were selected to compete in the next level of the
competition so ran in the Gin Gin District trials where they also did an admirable job. Clinton and
Jamie were nominated to race in the Bundaberg trials the following week. They put in a mighty
effort. Well done, lads.
School Review: Our four yearly school review was an intense, yet very worthwhile
and positive experience. The two reviewers spent a couple of days at school,
talking to a large number of people, reviewing documentation and generally getting
a feel for how we do things around here, particularly how student learning occurs.
The reveiwerws were very impressed with the learning that occurs at Booyal, the
relationships that exists in the school community and the innovative approach we
take to things. Should you wish to have a read, an executive summary of the review findings is on
the website. Their suggestions will be considered as we formulate the next quadrennial school
review; the plan that directs the school operations for the next 4 years.
Following the school review I was lucky enough to spend 2 informative days at reviewer training in
Brisbane.
Our 2018 focus is writing, fluency and problem solving.
Vision Testing: An optometrist visited and provided free sight testing to the
Preps. Hopefully this will be an annual occurrence which will benefit future
students.
Gymnastics: Thanks to Mrs Pelusi’s grant application, the students have enjoyed a series of
gymnastics lessons from a trained instructor. They have had lots of fun and found muscles they
never knew existed! Later in the year we will either invite Mr Hogan (the coach) back for
another day or, perhaps, visit his Gymfinity centre in Bundaberg.
New Sports Equipment: Big, new soccer goals have
been placed on the oval and two exercise bikes have
been purchased from money donated by the Grand
Hotel. The bikes are now ready for use; bolted, side by
side, on the veranda outside the big classroom.
Technology: Mr Leeson returned
this term (and will come back every
three weeks for a day) so
Technology lessons are well under
way again. This year, lessons will
involve computer skills, coding, robotics and 3D
printing.
Guidance Officer: We are fortunate to have access to Ms Wilde, a very experienced guidance
officer. She visited last week and will return in a few weeks’ time to assess and support students
with particular needs. Michelle is also available to speak with parents/carers who would appreciate
advice regarding their children’s academic and emotional wellbeing. Please let me know it you would
like further information.
Our 2018 focus is writing, fluency and problem solving.
Daily Rapid Reading: Thanks to Mrs Bendell, Ms Claire and Mrs Kovacs
for continuing to support the students in Daily Rapid Reading. They give
your child/ren 15 minutes of individualised practice and teaching two or
three times a week. This has made a proven difference to their
performance.
Homework: Homework is back in full swing and is generally being done well.
Students who have homework that is not handed in, incomplete or done in a
careless manner know that they have to do it in their own playtime. Thank you
for your support.
Mother’s Day: Happy Mother’s Day to all our Booyal mums (and other special ladies in
the students’ lives). Enjoy your special day and know that you are loved more than
words can say. We hope that you enjoyed your special cards and gifts.
Several mums and a very special aunty visited our class on Friday morning to hear their Year 3 – 6
child/ren talk about how extra-special they were. They were each also presented with a highly
prized ‘World’s Best Mum’ gold medal. It was a lovely morning where we all certainly ‘felt the love.’
Well done everyone, your writing was a credit to you.
Read To Me Day: The students thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Mrs Robertshaw and Mrs
Webb on Friday morning. They heard some wonderful stories, completed craft activities and learnt
about the upcoming ‘Read To Me Day’ and literacy activities that will be taking place in Childers
(which we will take part in). It was a lot of fun and highlighted the important message that reading
is vitally important.
Our 2018 focus is writing, fluency and problem solving.
Congratulations: Danita performed admirably at the recent Bundaberg Eisteddfod.
She played both the piano and cello, placing well in both instruments. Danita was
invited to perform at the gala concert on Friday where she was also awarded the
'Most Promising Strings' competitor of the eisteddfod. Well done. Wonderful Community Support: Thanks to a very generous donation by
the St Vincent De Paul Society we have
four school uniforms to donate. This will
be done by a special raffle this Friday.
Each family will have the same number of
tickets in the draw as they do children.
Should you not wish to be included in this
activity please let me know.
St Vincent De Paul can offer confidential support to those experiencing financial and
emotional stress. I encourage you to contact them in Childers; there is a lot of
assistance available.
What is coming up?
NAPLAN: Students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in NAPLAN testing this
Tuesday – Thursday. We take a low key approach to this and most respects the
children think that this is just a normal English or Maths lesson. No stress. We
encourage students to tackle NAPLAN just as they would any lesson; try their best and ‘go with
the flow.’
School Photos: Our regular school photographers, Country School Photos, are due to
visit on Friday 8th June.
The Childers Show is on Saturday 26th May. As part of the schools’
competition our P- 2 and 3 – 6 students will be creating two Childers themed
mascots, as well as contributing to the regular pavilion competitions and displays. P&C will operate
the canteen.
Booyal Bunyip Entrepreneurs: The Booyal Bunyip Entrepreneurs will spring
into action properly from next week. The whole group project will focus on
raising funds for koala conservation – two groups Years 3-4 and 5-6 will
work on different activities. As in previous years, all students in Years 4 – 6
will also have the opportunity to run their own businesses, if they wish to.
Times Tables: Starting last week students will be receiving extra practice with
their times tables. This will be individualised and focused on automaticity.
Our 2018 focus is writing, fluency and problem solving.
Athletics: There has been change of date for the Small Schools’ Athletics
Carnival. It is now be held on Friday 20th July, the first Friday of term 3.
School Play: Mr Horner has kindly offered to work with the
children to produce a short, 30 minute play of the Jungle Book,
which they will present at the end of the year.
Other ‘stuff’
Theft: It disturbs me to mention that there have been a few instances of theft at
school this term; not major things but it has happened more than once and is something
that we will NOT tolerate in any shape or form at Booyal Central. Staff have spoken
about this with the children and would appreciate if you could reinforce the message at
home, along with instructions about the importance of looking after one’s own belongings and
letting a staff member know if something goes missing (or if anything else untoward happens that
we should know about).
In light of the above comments and in line with school policy please ensure that students do not
bring toys or other valuables to school. Jewellery and fancy hair decorations are also not part of
our school uniform and should be left at home. All items (including pencils, rubbers etc.) should be
clearly named. Thank you for your help.
Staffing Next Semester: There will be some staffing changes next semester.
Mrs Ilett will replace Mrs Hollier on Monday – Wednesdays, except for the last
4 weeks of Term 3. We have not yet found a replacement for that time. Mr
Monks will replace Mrs Hollier on Fridays and also be acting principal when I am
away for 3 weeks.
Camp 2018: Exciting news! This year our camp will be held on Wednesday 28th – Friday 30th
November in Hervey Bay. We will be based at Campiabla
( https://www.campialba.com.au ) and activities will be organised
nearby. This will be a camp for all students, Prep – Year 6. As
always, in order to attend, students need to have behaved in a
safe and responsible manner throughout the year. We cannot risk
the safety and wellbeing of them or other students.
Volunteers: Thank you to those parents who continue to volunteer at
school and those who have offered to this term. We very much
appreciate your help.
Our 2018 focus is writing, fluency and problem solving.

P&C NEWS
The P&C will be operating the canteen at the Childers Show on Saturday 26th May. This is
the major fundraiser for the year and help keep the cost you pay for school camp down.
Volunteers are needed. Can you spare an hour or two to help? If so please see Desrae,
Kerry or Nancy. Thank you.
Next meeting Wednesday 13th June, after school. All welcome.
