A NOTE FROM FR. GREG MILLER, O.S.B.
Changing Roles of the Councils Next Monday, August 14 at 6:00 PM, the Parish and Finance councils, of both parishes, will come together in Avon for a workshop where we will explore the proper role for each council and how they are to work together. Since the II Vatican Council, parishes have established councils but their roles were not clear-ly established. Over fifty years, since Vatican II, the role of councils has changed. Each parish must have a Finance Council. Their membership is made up of people who have a certain gift in finance. They are appointed by the pastor to serve. Their role is one of being good stewards of the material assets of the par-ish. They prepare the budget and monitor it throughout the year. They also over-see parish investments, rental of the facilities and good maintenance of the build-ings and grounds. Also they look at ways to increase the financial income by fund raisers, Sunday giving and extra fund raisers. The Church Canon Law does not require that a parish have a parish coun-cil, however most parishes do have one. The role of the Parish Council is one of setting the vision and priorities for the parish. They are to survey the needs of the parish, and make plans to meet those needs. Parish Councils role is to pray, study and plan for a parish that is life giving now and for the future. They are a vehicle of communication from the various committees to the whole parish. An example of what could happen is that after their prayer and study of the needs of the parish, they may propose that we that we need to hire a parish nurse. They communicate with the Finance Council this need and together to come up with a plan to meet that need over a two year period. My experience with the lay leadership in both parishes has been very positive. We have some very good and dedicated people sharing their talents and time for the good of our parishes. My hope is that this workshop will help the councils to know better their role and how they can work together.
Together we go to God, Fr. Greg
