Multi-vendor Architecture
Historically, the topsides subsea controls component has been the responsibility of the subsea equipment vendor. In developments
containing subsea equipment from multiple vendors, operators ended up with multiple topsides subsea controls components. Recognizing the need for an integrated solution, a major global oil company set out to standardize subsea control technology in 2008. ENGlobal’s Universal Master Control Station (UMCS) is the result of a collaborative development effort with this operator. The original parameters required by the operator have helped make the UMCS the ideal solution for many subsea projects.

How the UMCS is Standardizing Subsea ControlsHow the UMCS is Standardizing Subsea Controls
In the first phase of a subsea development, an object blueprint is created for all components of the control system. Each object has multiple object instances. Each instance has its identifying parameters input into the form from the project P&IDs. This form-based structure is used to create a Data Exchange Table to populate the UMCS (HMI, PLC and Communication Server) and the Subsea Gateway, DCS, EPU and HPU.
This database management tool dramatically increases efficiency in the implementation and execution of a project. User configurable tools are utilized to create the interlocks and sequencing from the cause-and-effect document. Since this is a standardized approach, a majority of the first phase development engineering can be used for any subsequent tieback on a project, or on an entirely new project, further reducing cost, time and integration problems.

UMCS Object-Based Interface
The UMCS Standardized Interface utilizes a set of definitions or rules of engagement developed and agreed upon by all subsea and topside vendors. These rules of engagement govern implementation of the interface. An example of the mapping pro-cess is shown above. This process is completely reproducible from one project to another. Each subsea vendor provides their own Subsea Gateway, thus preserving the proprietary design and safeguards inherent in each system. This arrangement makes any modifications between the Subsea Gateway and SCM transparent to the UMCS. Communication with the DCS is less complicated because it is not proprietary, and it uses commercially available protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet IP, OPC DA or OPC UA.

The UMCS interface is comprised of three main layers: HMI, logic/control and Subsea Gateway to control pods on the ocean floor. Two complete and segregated channel networks, incorporating high availability redundant PLCs, simultaneously monitor data functions to and from each other, as well as between surface and subsea equipment. In the event of a channel network failure, the other processor will seamlessly operate the UMCS. Dual redundancy allows the UMCS to survive multiple points of failure by implementing communi-cation “cross strapping” and bump-less transfer for each of the redundant components.
