The small all-rounder with a wealth of applications
Cold Milling Machine W 35 DC
The ideal candidate for a wide range of applications
The manoeuvrable W 35 DC proves to be an exceed-
ingly helpful ally on the milling site, for its special hall-
mark – its small dimensions – makes it the ideal candidate
for all those minor but important tasks. And that’s not all:
Useful options, such as loading conveyor, all-wheel drive or
50 cm wide milling drum unit, open up an immense range of
applications to the W 35 DC. Milling small areas for partial
repairs, milling passes, supporting the large milling ma-
chines, and a whole lot more into the bargain: The skilful
small milling machine has just the right answer to all these
challenges.
The W 35 DC is second to none in the 35-cm class
2 // 3
Individual options, such as loading conveyor, all-wheel
drive or FCS, greatly extend the machine’s range of
applications.
The compact cold milling machine W 35 DC is perfectly
tailored to smaller construction projects.
The machine’s speedy operation and convenient size
for transport enable it to work on several job sites on a
single day, depending on the distance.

Small milling machine – big performance
Milling surfaces is part of the repertoire
It is really quite astonishing, just how much the innova-
tive cold milling machine W 35 DC can achieve, in
spite – or perhaps because – of its small dimensions. In ad-
dition to the many minor tasks that the industrious machine
pulls off so well, it certainly also has a say in the economical
milling of surfaces. This is down to the 50 cm wide optional
milling drum. The approximate practical area performance
to be expected can be calculated by subtracting an al-
lowance factor from the idealized performance curve. This
takes account of influencing factors that may reduce the
performance, such as hindrances to the work resulting from
traffic, waiting times for trucks, non-contiguous milling areas
or road fixtures.
4 // 5
The final area performance can be calculated using
an allowance factor that takes account of the job site
conditions.
The allowance factor is between 0.7 for free sections of
road and 0.3 for heavy urban traffic.
The modern engine and powerful mechanical milling
drum drive guarantee full performance up to a milling
depth of 110 mm.

A central item in the requirement specifications of
Wirtgen’s design engineers – and a standard feature in
all Wirtgen cold milling machines – is a state-of-the-art,
high-tech milling drum unit. The W 35 DC is no exception to
this rule, because the advantages offered by such a unit are
obvious: The hydraulically pressurized scraper ensures a clean
milled track and secure intake of the granulated material,
and the edge protectors reliably seal off the drum housing.
It is really not surprising, therefore, that with these features
successful milling is as good as guaranteed.

Cutting technology is our core competence
The success of the W 35 DC is greatly due to its ma-
ture cutting technology which has proven its worth
time and again in everyday use. Milling drums are replaced
quickly and easily, which enables different working widths
and tool spacings to be used for different milling contours.
All jobs are completed at the optimum milling performance,
and a high-quality milling result is achieved. Converting the
milling drum is simple and can be completed in the shortest
time. Replacing the cutting tools is just as easy. Once the
drum door has been opened, the cutting tools are quickly
replaced on the easily accessible milling drum.

The loading conveyor – an exceptionally useful option
Direct loading boosts performance
Anyone who knows what a strenuous and time-con-
suming job it is to remove the milled material from the
milled track by hand will soon come to appreciate the op-
tional loading conveyor of the W 35 DC. It conveys the granu-
lated material effectively and safely to, for instance, the
bucket of a wheel loader. This dispenses with the uneco-
nomical manual loading of the milled material, immediately
producing a clean milled track that serves as an excellent
base for the machine to travel on when milling the next cut.
The loading conveyor can, of course, be slewed to the left or
right, as it is sometimes ideal to deposit the milled material
in a windrow along the side.
Retrofitting the loading conveyorconverts the W 35 DC into a multi-functional rear loader

The loading conveyor can be mounted or removed by a
single person in next to no time.
The loading conveyor can be retrofitted, provided that
the machine is equipped with the optional hydraulic and
mechanical fittings.
The hydraulic power take-off can alternatively be used
for ancillary devices, such as the high-pressure cleaner
or hydraulic hammer.
The loading conveyor is completely covered, thus
effectively preventing the formation of dust.

The W 35 DC offers a wealth of features which make it
the ideal choice for tricky tasks in cramped job sites or
passageways. In addition to its compact, space-saving
dimensions and smooth steering, the machine also features
a front wheel with an extremely large steering angle. In this
way, the vivacious three-wheeled machine achieves mini-
mum milling radii, virtually performing pirouettes on the
spot. A prime example of this application is milling around
manhole covers. Another ace up the small machine’s sleeve
when working on loose or slippery ground is its powerful
optional all-wheel drive with hydraulic traction control.
It ensures optimum traction and an uninterrupted milling
operation.

Relaxed working boosts performance
Relaxed working is a prerequisite for achieving top
performance. That is why everything on the spacious
operator’s platform is arranged according to ergonomically
efficient principles. The operating elements offer convenient
control and are located within easy reach and in the driver’s
immediate field of vision. All displays are facing towards
him. In addition to that, the operator’s platform offers an ex-
cellent view of the milled edge, the area in front of the milling
drum, and the entire machine – irrespective of the driver’s
height. The optional folding stand-up seat and adjustable
steering wheel offer plenty of space for the machine opera-
tor’s individual requirements.

Special operation in buildings withlimited bearing capacities
Shedding the ballast
The rehabilitation of building floors frequently poses
problems when they possess only limited bearing ca-
pacities. However, the W 35 DC quite literally makes light
work of such an application. Weight slabs mounted in sev-
eral “drawers” inside the machine can simply be removed
individually, thus reducing the machine weight by up to
1,340 kg. Narrow building entrances are also no problem at
all, thanks to the W 35 DC’s slender width.
The supplementary weights can easily be removed
Workshop floors or park decks usually have limitedpermissible loads
Instantaneous weight reduction

The W 35 DC is particularly well equipped for the many
minor milling operations
A small milling machine performs important tasks in
many different areas of the milling job site. And it is in-
dispensable too, as it operates significantly more economi-
cally than a large milling machine. Our W 35 DC makes short
work of countless important jobs: Milling tie-ins, milling
around manhole covers or hydrants, cutting slots, rehabili-
tating screed or concrete floors in indoor application, re-
moving road markings, removing pavements at full depth,
transverse milling – the list could be continued indefinitely,
as the machine has a nearly limitless range of applications.
22 // 23
Thanks to its small size and turning radii, the machine is
eminently suitable for all milling operations in extremely
confined conditions.
Slot cutting rings are available for special applications
like, for instance, cutting butt joints or milling along rails.
Other special applications include the production of so-
called “rumble strips” – safety depressions in the pave-
ment shoulder that help to prevent cars from driving off
the road.
