Wealth alone is no guarantee of a secure retirement. It’stime to start thinking about what you'll need.
Even if you are doing well, plentiful assets and a goodincome are probably not enough to get rid of your worriesabout retirement—at least not according to new studies ofhigh net worth investors. Thousands of affluent boomers andGen Xers studied by Wharton and State Street GlobalAdvisors expressed fears about outlasting their money. Youmay be worried about preserving your standard of living in theface of market downturns, inflation and health care costs dur-ing a retirement that may last 30 years. In fact, 57% of thosesurveyed cited rising health care costs as their number-oneconcern. And if you’re in the younger half of those surveyed,a lack of traditional pensions and Social Security andMedicare safety nets is probably also on your mind.
Experts agree that wealth alone is no guarantee of retire-ment security; saving too little "runs up and down the incomescale and wealth scale," says Olivia S. Mitchell, an insuranceand risk-management professor at Wharton. Comfortable liv-ing inevitably translates to spending. Though the wealthysave, Mitchell explained in the Wharton study, “people withhigh earnings also spend a lot” to keep the lifestyle they enjoygoing.
Reasons for concernYour retirement isn't likely to be the same as it would have
been 50 years ago. The old adage was that you needed 80% ofyour current income when you retire—but nearly half of the1,800 millionaires surveyed by the 2007 Phoenix WealthSurvey said they will need more than 100%. You may even bethinking of working indefinitely, at least part-time, in order to
stay engaged and support a comfortable lifestyle. Also, yourlife expectancy has increased, even from just a generation ago.Determining your retirement goals is a complex process—onethat means taking the time to figure out what it is you reallywant now and down the road.
The planWorried as you may be, you may not have begun planning.
59% of high net worth investors have no formal written planfor their retirement goals—but a retirement analysis can help.Your Financial Advisor can run this analysis to assess yourfinancial situation, your potential annual retirement income, your savings and investments and your tax situation.
Then, it's time to analyze your retirement goals. Once youknow what you want, your Financial Advisor can determineways to help you get there, whether that involves altering yourinvestment strategy, changing the amounts you contribute orsomething else entirely. The retirement analysis will provideyou with a full report, including savings recommendationsand sources for retirement income.
Talk to your Financial Advisor about how a retirementanalysis might benefit you.

Oklahoma Club Calf Association - October ‘08Cool, fall nights, the last half of football is here. County fairs, State Fair
of Oklahoma and the Tulsa State Fair of 2008 are in the history books. Forsome, it is the last time, for others it is the first time, but all you exhibitorsand parents need to take it from me and my parents to cherish all of thesememories, make them last a lifetime. These good times you have andfriends you gain at the stock shows will last forever. Stock show people area special group that binds as a family like no other group and as your lifegoes on, you will see more and more of what I mean.
Scott Mullinx ,in the grand drive at the fat steer show, commented howjudges everywhere talk of the quality at Tulsa, not only in the steers, but alsowith the young people at the halter, how courteous and polite they are to thejudge and their fellow exhibitors, all the while, competing and displayingsome of the best showmanship anywhere. Jeff Sargent, who evaluated ourprospects at the Golden Driller show, stated as always, he was totally in aweby the quality of baby calves and our showman. He said anytime you cometo Oklahoma, you expected to see the best of both, but he truly thought thismight be the best of both he has seen. Joel Judge and John Rayfield eachworked two long days, sorting through what they called as good a SupremeDrive as they had ever had the pleasure of working, making a special pointthat every breed was represented by a superb female of their breed, and asthey slapped the Supreme and Reserve Supreme Heifer, it brought to a closeanother Tulsa State Fair. All you junior exhibitors don’t forget to thank yourparents, grandparents, teachers and 4-H leaders that helped you get there. Also, don’t forget your buyers at the premium auctions. Remember, theyare supporting you out of the generosity of their hearts. We need to let themknow we appreciate them.
As we put those baby steers on feed and start a new set of heifers, we areall looking forward to the NOC Fall Classic, Landrun Beef Expo,Oklahoma National Heifer Show, EOSC Breakout Show, WichitaMountain Classic, Frontier, Poorboy Classic and AGR show coming up thisfall. The point races are going strong, but there is still plenty of time beforethe Awards Banquet next spring.
Above all, we want to keep our organization admired and envied byexhibitors all over the country. We are looked upon as a top, top group andwe want it to continue that way.
Looking forward to seeing you at the jackpots or the American Royal,Phoenix, Louisville or Denver, so until next time, may all your calves bechampions and your experiences be memorable.
Sincerely,Lyle Blakley, OCCA President www.oklahomaclubcalfassociation.com

(50% moisture). Treating cornstalks with A.A. saved $1.12:din feed costs using current commodity prices. This $1.12 infeed savings allows producers to value cornstalks based on costof harvest, transport and storage.
a$1.12 difference; stalks value = 3.3¢:pound or $33:1000 lb. round bale
Another feedstuff that has been around for a number ofyears is Mix 30 sold by Timberlake Sales, Springfield, IL.Historically, sales of Mix 30 have been limited to volumeorders (semi-trailer loads) and Mix 30 has been promoted as afeedstuff for feedlot cattle. More recently, local distributorsfor Mix 30 have been contracted and Mix 30 may now beavailable in smaller quantities at a location (feed dealer) nearyour operation. Mix 30 is considered a protein- energy sup-plement ((16% crude protein, 10% fat) that has 130% thedigestible energy (DE) value of shelled corn. It contains con-densed distillers soluble (CDS), vegetable fat and a productreferred to as ProtaFerm. Currently Mix 30 costs $123:ton ifpurchased in quantities of 6000 gallons or more (F.B.Springfield, Illinois) and $175:ton if purchased in smallerquantities. Recommendations for feeding Mix 30 in cow dietsis forage plus 15 – 20% Mix 30 or feed 2 – 5 lbs. of Mix30:day and free choice forage. General recommendations forincluding Mix 30 into feedlot diets is 5 – 12% of the total dieton an as fed (moisture included) basis. Mix 30 and othercommercial supplements composed of alternative feedstuffsmay help larger and smaller size operations lower feed costs.
My next article will contain more sample diets we have fed atIllinois State University that contain higher inclusion rates ofalternative feedstuffs. So, keep reading.
Wrestling with input costs! What are my choices? Article #3
byDr. PaulWalker,
Professorof Animal
Science, Illinois State
University
When discussing alternative feedstuff choices the questionwhen defining or choosing an alternative feedstuff is, alterna-tive to what? I guess alternative can be defined “as opposed toshelled corn, corn silage, local hays or soybean meal” i.e. feedsconsidered as traditional feedstuffs.Three alternative feedstuff choices that have been around for2 or 3 decades but that receive variable interest are urea, anhy-drous ammonia and a product called Mix 30.
Urea has been added to feedlot diets for over 40 years. However, many smaller Midwest feedlots have not consideredurea as a protein equivalency source because its use necessi-tates a TMR approach. Major feed companies frequently addurea to protein supplements as a lower cost mechanism toincrease the percent protein in the supplement. Even whenpriced at $800:ton (Article One, August, 2008 issue) the costper pound of crude protein equivalency for urea is only0.14¢:lb compared to soybean meal at 44.44¢:lb., DDGS at40.0¢:lb or wet DGS at 27.65¢:lb of protein. Adding urea tofinishing diets should be considered by more Midwest feed-lots, but be sure to adhere to the rules-of-thumb presented inArticle Two, September, 2008 issue.
As hay supplies become more limited and/or more expen-sive due to increased hay acres converted to corn and soybeanproduction, many cow-calf producers should reconsider treat-ing low quality forages (corn stalks, soybean stubble, wheat oroat straws, etc.) with anhydrous ammonia (AA) to increase theroughages crude protein and TDN composition. At $830:ton(July 2008 article) AA has a cost of only 0.08¢:lb of crude pro-tein equivalency. Ron Lemenager (Purdue University) as didothers, conducted a considerable amount of research treatinglow-quality forages with AA during the 1980’s. Adding 3.0%AA to the dry matter weight of the forage can increase theTDN content by 10% and can double the crude protein con-centration. For example, adding 3.0% AA to big round balesof corn stalks or to corn stalks harvested with a stacker canraise the crude protein value from 3 - 4% up to 6 - 8% andthe TDN value from 45% to 55%. Treating low qualityroughages with AA may allow the forage to fully meet a drycows crude protein and TDN requirements with little or nosupplemental protein or energy. Treating roughages with AArequires an accurate estimate of forage dry matter, a plasticcover sufficiently large to cover the bales/stacks of forage anda replaceable 100 gallon tank to capture the AA as it volatilizesunder the plastic cover. It takes 3 – 4 weeks for the AA to sta-bilize within the forage prior to uncovering and feeding.Treatment with AA should be accomplished while daytimetemperatures still reach at leaset 40°F.
The following table compares two diets fed at ISU to beefcows in past years. The difference in feed cost between thetwo diets allowed for a value of up to $33:1000lb round baleof corn stalks. The DGS in the diet was wet distillers grains
