Thoughts of springhave tantalized many of our imaginations since the descent of winterʼs first snowflake. Within these mental musings, weʼre transported to the verdure that characterizes the outdoor classrooms our students learn within and
the fields our athletes compete upon. These scenestypify the refreshment that the coming season willbring to Shore Regional.
Such pacific settings starkly contrast the upheaval and chaos that can envelop a school district during the spring months. Shore Regional,however, remains enormously fortunate to continu-ally count upon dedicated community members, adynamic faculty and tireless staff to upkeep excep-tional levels of thoroughness and efficiency.
The plaudits earned by Shore Regional stu-dents locally and nationally attest to the districtʼssuccess. Whether it be from national recognitiongarnered by scholar-athletes or receiving a letter ofthanks acknowledging the efforts of student volun-teers, the outstanding achievements of the studentbody swell the district with immense pride. In an eraof ever-increasing distractions and educational dis-cord, our students are proving every day that aShore Regional education remains a bedrock for fu-ture success.
Lastly, I encourage all community membersto exercise the elective franchise this April and votein their local school elections. Taking part in thisfoundational element of our democracy can be botha reassuring and reaffirming experience. On behalfof Shore Regional, please accept the districtʼs bestwishes for health and success during this excitingtime of year.

With articles regarding school finance continuing to remain in the headlines, Shore Regional High School Districtʼs stakeholders can take heart in knowing that the Office of Business Administration has remained attached to its modus operandi of prudent fiscal conservatism. Neither political gamesmanship nor partisanship will derail the districtʼs mission to ensure all students receive an excellent education.
Even with a prospective 1% increase in state aid for the district, the 2011-2012 budget has been stringently formulated within the capped 2% property tax increase.
Despite the cost-savings gained from the recent referendumʼs improvements, the Of-fice of Business Administration has produced a budget that nonetheless reflects theneed to make cuts “across the board” in order to retain the high-levels of efficiency thathave long characterized Shore Regional. Stakeholder inquiries regarding the budgetare always welcomed by this office, however information pertaining to the 2011-2012budget can be immediately accessed on the web at the following address:http://www.shoreregional.org/VOTE.
Winter 2011 saw the commencement of the audito-riumʼs refurbishment; the capstone project of 2008ʼs refer-endum. The auditoriumʼs revitalization included makingthe facility climate-controlled, installing new seats, newacoustic paneling, and a new stage-curtain. These im-provements augur well for Shore Regionalʼs aspirations toincrease revenue as outside production companies havealready begun inquiring of the possibility to rent this beau-tifully renovated performance setting.
Just as in years past, I encourage all community members to vote in their localschool elections (Wednesday, April 27). Absentee ballot information, polling places andmore can be accessed online via the above mentioned website.

The Board of Education is immensely pleased to acknowledge The National Soccer Coaches As-sociation of Americaʼs recent bestowing of a 2010 “Team Academic Award” upon the 2009 Varsity Girlssoccer team. In order to be eligible for the award, the teamʼs GPA average had to be 3.25 or above forthe entire academic year (weighted on a 4.0 scale). Shoreʼs girls came in 1st place among New Jerseypublic high schools with a 3.70 team GPA. Out of 7,000 teams, only 239 schools qualified, and Shoreranked 76th nationally. The Board of Education was honored to receive the framed NSCAA award cer-tificate from coach George Moutis at the February 24th public meeting.

The Board of Education commended thehard work of Student Council advisor Ms. AllisonCronk and senior Samantha Campbell in transform-ing the Russell T. Olivadotti Media Center into thestaging ground for the State Student Council Exec-utive Transition Meeting. Ms. Campbell, the out-going state Vice-President, conducted tours ofShore along with other dedicated members of theSRHS student council. Connecting with Shore’s FutureShore Regional High School’s Office of Student Personnel Services visited each
district middle school in January to facilitate the high school transition.
During the final weeks of January 2011,Shore Regionalʼs guidance counselors and StudentPersonnel Services staff entered the halls of districtmiddle schools to meet with eighth-grade students.In preparation for the fallʼs incoming freshmen,counselors moved from school to school, personallymeeting with students and parents to answer ques-tions and provide insight regarding Shore Re-gionalʼs rigorous program of studies and numerousextracurricular opportunities.
“Getting into the middle schools really allowsour counselors to connect with future Shore stu-dents,” remarks Jon Warner, Director of StudentPersonnel Services. He adds, “This initiative allowsthe guidance department to form meaningful rela-tionships with students and parents well before ʻdayoneʼ of Freshman year.”
Throughout each day of onsite visits, Shoreguidance counselors and staff offered in-depthknowledge concerning required coursework, Ad-vance Placement offerings, the International Bac-calaureate program and other unique aspects of theShore Regional Program of Studies. In addition toscholastic programs, counselors gave soon-to-bestudents a versing of Shoreʼs myriad extracurricularopportunities and activities such as the InteractCommunity Service Club, Student Council and TheBeacon Student Newspaper.

January saw several members ofShore Regional High School's NationalHonor Society devote their weekends tovolunteering at local care facilities. Early onin the month a group of NHS seniors spentthe day at Liberty Royal Rehabilitation andHealthcare Center in Tinton Falls. LibertyRoyal offers a complete range of therapies,including physical, occupational, respiratory,and speech therapies, providing care for afull spectrum of rehabilitative needs. Al-though an excellent center for treatment, itlacked one crucial element needed forspeedy recovery: Shore spirit!
Throughout the days, Shore studentsplayed cards, dominoes and even their owninstruments to entertain Liberty Royal resi-dents. "In many cases, some of our resi-dents do not have family and they werethrilled to have students take time andspend it with them," recounts Liberty RoyalActivity Director Stephen Hubeny. AddedMary Cannon, Executive Administrator,"The residents had a blast; they were ask-ing when the students could come backeven before day one was over!"
Senior Zach Hess recollects, "Theresidents were really responsive to our ef-forts. It made me definitely want to go backand spend more time at Liberty Royal."Likewise, senior Olivia Bacyzk remarks,"Many of the residents were real cardsharks! They loved playing 'Blackjack,' and'Poker' with us and we all had a great time."

Camp Oakhurst, located in Oakhurst,NJ, serves individuals with disabilities thateffect movement, coordination, and stam-ina. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Shorestudents worked with many of CampOakhurst's year round residents afflictedwith Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy,Post Polio, Osteogenesis Imperfecta andsimilar conditions. Along with lots of smiles,Shore's "crafty" Blue Devils brought theircraft-making skills with them. Constructingall kinds of unique “jewelry” and artwork,Shore NHS students spent the day string-ing, weaving and gluing their way throughan array of colorful and fun projects.
"Working with the residents at CampOakhurst not only reminded me of how for-tunate I am but it made me realize just howimportant it is to volunteer in the commu-nity," remarks senior Jenni Juliano. Ju-liano's fellow senior Chelsea Amorosoadds, "Working with the children at CampOakhurst helps reaffirm one's purpose as avolunteer. You instantly know that you'remaking a difference. When you see thesmiles on so many faces you know they areenjoying the opportunity to interact and crafttogether."

GOING the Math “Extra Help” and ELL Programs
“All Hours” Math Department Heightening Student Achievement
Having reasserted America's need to focus on math education in his February 19th weekly address,President Obama would be pleased to observe the Shore Regional High School Mathematics Departmentin action. The President stated, "Over the next ten years, nearly half of all new jobs will require educationbeyond high school, many requiring proficiency in math." Despite this growing trend, the United States has"fallen behind in math, science, and graduation rates. As a result, companies struggle to hire Americanworkers with the skills that fit their needs."
Such daunting situations are exactly whyShore's math faculty have invested countlesshours outside "normal" class periods to ensureevery student has an opportunity to heightentheir computative skills. Math teachers (Mrs.Cocco, Mrs. Mazza, Mrs. Miano, Mr. Nicol, Mrs.Partenfelder and Ms. Schmid) along with theirspecial education counterparts have endeavoredto make sure Shore students know that chancesto learn mathematic skills can come before, dur-ing or even after the school day.
Mr. Remedios, for example, convenes anearly AM session each day before the bell rings for first period. "Sometimes it's one student, some-times it's a dozen. It doesn't matter to me howmany show up as long as they all know I'm hereto help," says Remedios. A Shore graduate him-self, Remedios finds that early AM sessions offerneeded guidance to students that "might need tocatch a bus home or get onto the field right afterschool" and otherwise couldn't come after thelast period of the day.
Similarly, Mrs. Cocco has developed awell-received invitation for any student to come to her classroom for skill refinement. "It's totallyvoluntary, but when the students know that you'rethere for them, many will show up because theysense you care about their success," reflects Cocco.
A self-described "Type A" personality, Cocco's calculatingly organized methodology has mixed wellwith students from varied mathematical backgrounds: "This year I saw the highest midterm grades I've seenin seven years. It's really encouraging for students to see their extra hard work pay off!" When reflecting onwhy her department sacrifices so much time outside the confines of the "traditional" teaching day, Coccostates, "You have to make time when the kids have time. Whether that means getting here before the daystarts or staying long after the day has ended, it all comes down to meeting each student's individualneeds."

Members of the junior and sen-ior IB classes traveled to the LibertyScience Center on December 21,2010, to view a presentation on thescience of Van Goghʼs art. While theywere waiting for the presentation tobegin, the students were able to visitseveral of the centerʼs exhibits, allow-ing them to meld further the two disci-plines of art and science.
Plans are underway for twomajor student-led events: a Bowl-a-Thon to benefit Monmouth CountyʼsBig Brothers/Big Sisters organizationand a dinner to raise communityawareness of hunger issues at homeand abroad. Exams for the IB Class of 2011begin May 3, 2011, and end May 24,2011. Most exams last at least ninetyminutes each, and the IB students willsit for more than ten exams each. Additionally, all IB diploma candidateswill “defend” their visual arts projectsbefore a visiting examiner from Co-lumbia University on March 28, 2011.The International Baccalaureate Or-ganization will release results of thetesting and other assessment cycleson July 5; at that time the IB students,their teachers, and the staff of ShoreRegional High School will learn whichof the ten diploma candidates re-ceived the IB Diploma.

Shore IB Students and Knitting Club Knit for the Troops
Throughout January, Shoreʼs IBstudents teamed-up with members ofthe “Madame DeFarge Knitting Club”and prepared a large shipment ofscarves and blankets for soldiers cur-rently serving in Afghanistan. Togetherthe group knitted and sent a dozenscarves, several blankets, toiletry items,and snacks to soldiers stationed inAfghanistan. Currently, members areworking on more knitted and crocheteditems for forthcoming shipments in thespring. "Coach Mac" is in his 7th year as a Math/Business Teacher and Strengthand Conditioning Coach at New Egypt High School. Holding an MS in ExerciseScience with a concentration in Performance Enhancement and Injury Preven-tion from California University of Pennsylvania, Coach Mac recently authored thescholarly article “Periodization and Complex Training in a High School SummerProgram,” published in the December 2010 issue of Strength and ConditioningJournal. He is currently highlighted as the “Spotlight On” feature of the “milkdeliv-ers.org” web site for his belief and encouragement of drinking chocolate milk asa recovery drink after workouts.

In January 2011, the Atlanticville newspaper featured "longtime friendsand Shore Regional alumni Holly Migliaccio and Shawn Kingsleyʼs recentlylaunched business “Rook Coffee Roasters.” An independent coffee shop featur-ing an in-house roaster along with fair-trade and organic coffees, the piece cap-tured how these Shore alums perfectly craft their product from bean to cup.

Economist Elizabeth Elmore, a professor of economics at Richard Stock-ton College of New Jersey, has lately been a featured contributor to the StateEmployment and Training Commissionʼs “Career Fuel Newsletter” and “Advice101” column. Elmore began laying the groundwork for her economics careerback in high school when she took a calculus course. Since graduating fromNotre Dame, she has employed her skills at Stockton, where she urges studentsto study economics because of its liberal arts grounding. Her recent contribu-tions can be seen on the stateʼs career website, http://www.njnextstop.org.

In September 2010, Shore Regional launched an alumni armed-forces section on the district website. The Alumni Veterans section cata-logues the service records of alumni that entered military service upongraduation and apprises stakeholders of their personal accomplishments.The spotlight below is but one story of the large body of alumni who haveserved the nation honorably since their days at Shore Regional.
Robert S. Ferrell - CLASS of 1977
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) hosted its second annual C4ISR Senior Leaders Conference February 2-4, 2011 at Caserma Ederle, headquarters of U.S. Army Africa, in Vicenza, Italy. The communications and intelligence community event, hosted by Brigadier General Robert Ferrell ('77), AFRICOM C4 director, drew approximately 80 senior leaders from diverse U.S. military and government branches and agencies, as well as representatives of African nations and the African Union.
“The conference is a combination of our U.S. AFRICOM C4 systems and intel directorate," saidFerrell. "We come together annually to bring the team together to work on common goals to work onthroughout the year. The team consists of our coalition partners as well as our inter-agency partners, as well as our components and U.S. AFRICOM staff. With the stand-up of U.S. Cyber Command, it brings a lot of unique challenges that we as a team need to talk through to ensure that our information is protected at all times," Ferrell said.
In a ceremony held on 10 July 2009 at the Pentagon, General Peter Chiarelli,Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, promoted Colonel Robert Ferrell to the rank ofBrigadier General in front of a standing room only audience. BG Ferrell graduatedfrom Shore Regional High School and enlisted in the Army in July 1977. He attainedthe rank of Sergeant before leaving active duty in 1981. He completed his undergrad-uate degree at Hampton University, Virginia and was commissioned on August 15,1983 as a Regular Army Officer in the Signal Corps. He received a Master of Sciencein Administration from Central Michigan University and a Master of Science in Strat-egy from the United States Army War College.
BG Ferrellʼs distinguished career has spanned over 30 years. He has servedin Army units in the United States, Korea, and Europe, and has deployed to Bosniaand Iraq. He has commanded at every level from company to brigade and has servedin units such as the 2nd Infantry Division 82nd Airborne Division, 1st Cavalry Division,Special Operations Command, and 5th Signal Command. BG Ferrell has also servedas the Signal Branch Captains Assignment Officer; Aide-de-Camp to the Secretary ofthe Army; Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General, V Corps, United States ArmyEurope and Seventh Army; Military Assistant to the Executive Secretary, Office of theSecretary of Defense; Military Assistant to the Director, Program Management.
BG Ferrell is married to the former Monique Douteʼ of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Monique is a career Federal CivilServant employee who has worked for the U. S. Army Audit Agency for over 23 years, where she currently serves as the Directorof the Contract Audits Division. BG and Mrs. Ferrell have two children, Robert II, a graphic designer, and Michael, a Private FirstClass in the United States Army, assigned to a special operations unit at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Michael represents the thirdgeneration of his family to serve the United States Army Signal Corps.

This past February, the New Jersey De-partment of Education released the annual “re-port cards” for each district within the state.Shore Regionalʼs 2009-2010 report card displaysdata that once again evidences another year ofexceptional educational efforts. Well above stateaverages in terms of student performance indica-tors, the district remains fully committed to maxi-mizing proficiency amongst the entirety of thestudent body.
Over the past decade, ShoreRegional High School has main-tained a rigorous academic program.Encompassed in the program ofstudies is deep student engagementwith the New Jersey Core Curricu-lum Content Standards. Beyond this,there is strong encouragement andsupport for students to extend theirlearning beyond these mandates.Most recently is the addition of a fourth year ofSocial Studies as a graduation requirement.
One of the greatest indicators of ShoreRegionalʼs commitment to academic excellenceis the designation it received as an InternationalBaccalaureate World School. With the imple-mentation of this program during the 2007-2008school year, Shore Regional High School be-came the first comprehensive high school inMonmouth County to offer this rigorous, presti-gious program. Shore Regionalʼs InternationalBaccalaureate Diploma Programme enables stu-dents to delve into a full liberal arts curriculumthat stresses the interdependence of contentareas and the importance of international-mind-edness in a global society. The program servesas an accelerated alternative to an established,thriving Advanced Placement curriculum.
No amount of “report card” data can trulycapture Shore Regional High Schoolʼs devotionto the development of the “whole person.” Thedistrict earnestly believes that a student's creativ-ity, interests, and talents are often best servedthrough participation in extracurricular activities.These experiences include an acclaimed theatrearts program, organizations that serve the com-munity, and an unparalleled interscholastic ath-letic program. Student and faculty dedication tothese programs have led to a tradition of excel-
lence. Shore Regional High Schoolproudly acknowledges that overtwo-thirds of the entire student bodyparticipates in at least one extracur-ricular program.
Perhaps the greatest modelof on-going learning is the faculty,staff and administration of ShoreRegional High School. Teachers
and other professionals actively seek opportuni-ties to excel in their profession. As a result of thefaculty maintaining such high expectations forprofessional development and the documentedimpact such activities have upon students andstudent learning, Shore Regional High SchoolDistrict continues to offer professional develop-ment programs of the highest caliber.
