Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday can be a somewhat emotionally confusing day.
How exactly are we supposed to react to the events of
today’s two Gospel readings? Are we to rejoice at Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem, or lament the recounting of
his Passion and Death? Of course the answer is yes, both.
We recognize that these two events reflect the reality of
being followers of Christ, the tension felt by us as sinners
striving for holiness. For we have all both rejoiced in a time
of consolation, calling out with praise, “blessed is he who
comes in the name of the Lord.” And in desolation we have
all been a part of that mob that cries out louder and louder,
“Crucify him, Crucify him.” We have honored the Lord
with raised palm branches, and we have held the whip. We
have at times laid down our cloaks to make smooth the way
of the King, and at other times we have clothed Christ in a
purple garment, mocking his kingship. We have helped
Christ to ride comfortably on that beast of burden, and we
have silently stood by as he carries for us the burden of the
cross…
If we are honest with ourselves we know that even as we
strive to be great saints, but for the grace of God, we are
also capable of tremendous sins. This is part of the mystery
of the Christian life. And in some mysterious way God sees
the messiness of our lives and he makes sense of it and he
uses it for his glory.
As we enter into this Holy Week, we have a great
opportunity to experience yet another seeming
contradiction of emotions, that of joyful suffering. As we
celebrate the Triduum this week, may we find strength in
our weakness, grace at work in our sins and joy in our own
cross so that united with Christ, we may experience the
even greater joy of the Resurrection.
If you and your family are able please try to attend the rich
liturgies of Holy Week as they assist us in entering into the
mysteries that we as Christians hold most dear, and by
attending these services we will also be truly prepared to
greet our Lord on Easter Morning as he rises from the
tomb.
Holy Thursday begins at 7 pm at St. Peter Church.
Good Friday begins at 3 pm and will be held at St. Peter
Church. We will also have Stations of the Cross available at
7 pm at the Church of St. Joseph.
Holy Saturday begins at 8 pm (sundown) and will be held
at St. Peter Church. This year we are welcoming into the
Church four catechumens who will be baptized and two
candidates who will be confirmed.
Easter Day Masses will be on Sunday at 8 am and 10:30
am, both at St. Peter Church.

Please welcome Dianne Griffith
It was so wonderful to welcome Dianne Griffith back to our parish family at a new parishioner
welcome last November. Dianne was a member of our parish years ago. Father Nathan’s joy
and reverence in Mass, his caring attitude, the vibrancy of the parish and the focus on spiritu-
ality drew her back home.
While Dianne and her husband, Robert, are actually residents of South Dakota, they spend
significant time here at their second home in Delano. Robert is a dentist and they also run
several businesses that keep them busy traveling the U.S.
Dianne is a long-time 12-step member. She focuses significant time there as well as enjoying
reading and spending time with family.
Please welcome Dianne to our parish family.

PASSION
The contrast between the processional reading in today’s
liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We
are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is
fulfilled in Jesus.
First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to
come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not
know what they are saying. They think he is the promised
king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the
Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the
disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading.
In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is
in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us,
trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk
in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of
the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the “Road of Sorrows,” in
Jerusalem. As soon as it became safe for Christians to
worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked
out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today’s
usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred
years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have their own
unique detours.
Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then.
Almost everyone begins at the Lion’s Gate in the Muslim
Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It’s
less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through
crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks.
There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations
along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what
matters is the pilgrim’s unique ability to see even an
ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than
meets the eye.
