The Northern View:Northern Monitoring for the Environment, Security, and Sustainable Development An Invitation
Tom HiroseApril 2003
-
Northern regions encompassing the Arctic and Subarctic, the boreal zone as well as all areas north (Cryosphere). This is an area of + 53M km2.
Wheres Our North?
-
Why The Northern View? Global significance Becoming more open due to technology and changing climate Harsh but pristine and fragile Need for policy development Many international bodies Not sufficient commercial drivers to obtain the information needed
-
Northern Issues (Sea Ice)Global Warming location, persistence, consistencyRisk from economic activity (O&G, Shipping)Biodiversity (marine and mammals habitat)Search and rescue (northern peoples)Transportation (navigation and access)TourismTraditional ways of life (northern peoples)

ALSO OVER THE NEXT NINE MONTHS WE HOPE TO: Involve additional End Users and Service providers (expand service portfolio(s))Engage CRYSYS, CLiC, IASC, & other science bodiesInclude climate change issuesDefine a coupled R&D program Add new service portfolio(s)But to make it to Phase 2, we need early wins!

Potential IICWG ParticipationProvision of products and services
Sea Ice Archive critical for environmental analysis
Current Charts seamless hemispheric ice charts on a routine basis (multiple applications)
Near-real time products support local/operational government needs
Forecasts for impact and adaptation (seasonal and medium/long term)
Extend service portfolios to your part of the world
Introduce new service portfolios
-
An Example Northern AboriginalsSubsidence living is more than an issue of food. integral to personal, family, community spirit important for health (diet, fitness)
Ice Issues:Retreat of ice pack increases costs (fuel and repairs)
Break-up of fast ice and slow freeze-up puts humans at risk
Weaker ice (thickness) and edge location over shallows required for walrus
Snow cover before rapid freeze increases human risk
Need information product(s) that better characterizes the sea ice for marine habitat and hunting
-
Potential Benefits to IICWGPromotion to policy sector will increase new uses/markets for ice center products
Secure funding to support services (e.g. users want the product, but cannot pay directly)
Collaborative r&D to transfer algorithms/techniques to operational level
An opportunity to share data/costs (Northern View have overlapping data needs)
