JANUARY 2011 MEETING 2010 ANNUAL BEST FINDS
It’s time once again for the much-anticipated
ANNUAL BEST FINDS CONTEST. This is one of the highlights of the year, so we hope every member will
participate. Bring your best finds recovered during 2010
for the Best Finds Contest. The entries must have been found between January 2010 and December 2010 and
while you were a member of the GCTC.
Categories will be: Best Platinum Jewelry; Best
Gold; Best Gold with Stones; Best Silver; Best
Costume Jewelry; Best Toy; Best Token; Best Foreign
Coin; Most Unusual; and Oldest American Coin.
Winners of the 10 major categories will each receive a silver half-dollar and a certificate. The American coin
category will not be divided into subcategories. All non-
winning entries will be eligible for a drawing for a special surprise provided by Hunt Master Linda Bennett. Each
member is allowed one entry per category. Winners are
decided by the same voting system that we use for the
Monthly Best Finds Contest. Voting on the Oldest American Coin will not be necessary for obvious reasons.
The Good Will Ambassadors Unsung Hero trophy will
be unveiled, naming the top winner and all members who have returned items to their rightful owners during 2010.
We thank January’s Mystery Prize volunteer, Gary
McNew, who will try to stump us again and Ed D’Amato who has volunteered to provide refreshments.
JOIN US EARLY AT P.A. BBQ!

MONTHLY BEST FINDS CHANGE The budget for the Monthly Best Finds prizes has been strained due to the price of silver reaching $30 per ounce.

2010 HOLIDAY PARTY Approximately 75 members joined us for our Annual
Holiday Party. Starting at 5:00 p.m. on December 9th,
everyone pitched in to help transform our usually sparse clubhouse into a winter wonderland. Everywhere we
looked, decorations were being strung, punch was being
poured, desserts were being displayed, and numerous
dishes were being set out. The tables were teeming with members’ favorite family recipes, including carrot soufflé,
corn pudding, turkey dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy,
stuffing, string bean casserole, ham, pulled pork, turkey, cranberries and so much more!
We were pleasantly surprised when our good friends at
PA BBQ (Park Avenue BBQ Grille) in Lake Worth
generously donated 10 pounds of delicious pulled pork and sauce! Another fun surprise came in the form of a
yummy chocolate sheet cake sent courtesy of Chicago
club member Bruce Marta, who was unable to attend. Every family received a gift, beautifully wrapped by
Amy and Steve Hamedl and Jan Smirnow. Paul and
Marge Hamlin of Seashore Gifts of Lantana placed secret tags on several of the wrapped presents, earning the
winners a special prize. Four lucky members each won an
enormous Australian Trumpet Sea Shell.
Special thanks go to Jan Smirnow for organizing the Dessert Contest and prizes, Mindy Spiroch for serving as
emcee, Linda Bennett for the endless hours she puts in
each year, Steve Hoskins for taking all those wonderful pictures, Ed D’Amato for decorating outside with holiday
lights, Elayne Lynch and Heather McNew for setting up
the food tables, Karl and Linda Bennett, Gail Hoskins,
Karen Larson, and Elayne Lynch for setting up the
tables and decorations, Gary McNew for the sound
system, and Stacey deLucia for the holiday music and
trees. It took a great committee to have a first-rate party!
December birthday celebrants Jack Saint and Carol
Presslein both received a birthday dollar at the meeting.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The Gold Coast Treasure Club thanks the followingsupporters for making our December Holiday Party a huge success!
DUBIOUS AWARDS Winners of these awards were nominated by fellow
members for their “dubious” actions during club events.
Jack Saint received waterproof Band-Aids to prevent bothersome nipple irritation after wearing a wet suit while metal detecting in the water.
Irving Smith was recognized for the clues he
provided to locate the buried coin cache. Irving received a red sprinkler head to remind him that
this coin cache represents the longest running and
most frustrating set of clues in the history of the
Gold Coast Treasure Club!
******************************************
WINNER OF THE BROKEN SCOOP AWARD By popular vote, Jack Saint received the honor of
winning the third Annual Broken Scoop Award for his
dubious, but great tip for all water hunters who wear wet suits: use Band-Aids to prevent that pesky problem with
nipple irritation.
Jack will have to display this award in a prominent place in his home until the next Holiday Party in 2011.
Hopefully he’ll be able to pass along the award at that
time to another member. The scoop was donated by Kevin
Reilly of Reilly's Treasured Gold, Inc. in 2008.
SPECIAL THANKS FOR HOSTING A CLUB HUNT IN 2010
Engraved calculators were awarded to Ben Smith, Jim
Sharp and Paul Hamlin in appreciation for hosting club
hunts during 2010. Thank you, guys, for your hard work!

and Radina Malchev each received holiday stockings.

IT’S A TOUGH JOB… …but somebody’s gotta do it! And for the past two
years, that person has been Mindy Spiroch, who has faithfully served as GCTC President. We thanked and
recognized Mindy for her years of service and then we
welcomed new President, Gary McNew.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN 2010 For the 15
th consecutive year, GCTC members
supported Home Safe, a haven for abused, abandoned,
and neglected children. A big thank you goes to everyone
who - despite the grim economy – helped us raise $260!
Once again, members collected and donated cell phones and ink cartridges to raise money for the club, as
well as hundreds of prescription eyeglasses and sunglasses
to benefit those who cannot afford prescription lenses.

JIM SHARP’S TIP OF THE MONTH The Life of Batteries Most of us just want to get out and hunt. We don’t
think about our batteries in our detectors until we are
out there hunting and not finding anything. My Garrett Sea Hunter uses four beeps to indicate that it’s fully
charged and then it goes down to one beep and will
start to make intermediate beeps as it starts to die.
Check your detector’s owner manual to know how
your detector works with batteries. I write down how many hours that I have been detecting and then I can
decide whether or not to change out the batteries for
the next hunt. Mine gets about 28-30 hours of detecting on eight AA batteries before they die.
I also went and purchased rechargeable batteries and just recharge them as needed. This will also save
you money over the long haul as we all want to save
and it also saves our landfills. Regarding rechargeable batteries, it is best that you drain down the batteries
until they are either almost dead or completely dead
before recharging. The reason that you do this is because batteries have a memory in them and if you
charge them before they are dead, they tend to go back
to that level and don’t fully charge themselves.
I also carry a plug-in for the rechargeable batteries
as most of the time I am driving for about an hour to where I am going. This way you will have them all
charged up and ready to go. You don’t want to be out
and have your batteries die on you and then realize that you left your others in the car and have to walk a
couple of blocks to get them.
Always carry more batteries with you as you don’t
want to have to run to the store to buy more when you
can be out there finding the goodies. I went and purchased extra battery cases so I can put batteries in
them and then just pull out the dead one and put in the
new battery pack. They are together and not rolling around in my SUV so when I get home I can dispose of
them there.
Until Your Next Great Finds. Jim

EDITOR’S BONUS TIP: SILICA GEL PACKETS Don’t toss those disposable silica gel packets that come packed with shoes and purses; their moisture-
wicking properties can protect your electronics! If
water gets in your camera or cell phone, immediately
place it in a plastic bag filled with silica gel packets. They’ll absorb moisture and save the device in a matter
of days. Keep silica gel packets in your camera case at
all times to prevent moisture-related problems. For beach trips, pack a plastic zip-top bag with a silica gel
pack inside, and use it to seal up cell phones, cameras
and other electronic equipment.
