Issue 28 17th June 2016 Headteacher : Mr John M Stephens
Dear Parents, Carers and Children,
Welcome to Brook who has joined us in 4G. I hope
that you will enjoy your learning with us here at
Goosewell.
What a day yesterday! There was a great
atmosphere in the Main Hall and in classrooms
where the England v Wales Euros match was
watched by hundreds of children who wanted to or
were allowed to. A tense afternoon was
experienced by all. The children were taught
about fair play, sportsmanship and positive fan
behaviour during the earlier Key Stage 2
assembly. They demonstrated this during the
match after the vast majority of children sang
God Save The Queen extremely impressively
whilst a few of us sang Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.
A huge thank you to Mr Roscorla for providing us
with the technology to watch the match!
Just a reminder that next Thursday is a school
election closure day for children only, with the
exception of Year 4 children in London and Year 6
on residential. Staff will be here as normal for
training, doing Home Visits or out at residentials.
As I informed you previously, Plymouth City
Council cannot find alternative suitable premises
in this area for two polling stations, one each for
Plymstock Radford and Plymstock Dunstone.
Happy Father’s Day to all Goosewell Dads. Enjoy
your day!
John M. Stephens,
Headteacher

Goosewell Knitters!
Well done to our fantastic Goosewell Knitting Club children and their helpers, Mrs Vaughan,
Mrs Crocker and Mrs Cooke who recently donated a precious knitted blanket to the animals at
Woodside Animal Welfare Trust. The children have been working on their
knitting and crochet skills over the past year and created a patchwork blanket that has been
given to the very cute
kittens at Woodside to snuggle up on! Woodside were very grateful for this gift and wrote a
wonderful letter
thanking the children.
Dear Friends
Thank you very much for all your hard work knitting the beautiful blanket for our animals. You are all
very clever to be able to knit so well and you chose such lovely colours. The blanket has been put in a
bed with some kittens and their mum, it looks very bright and cheerful and it will keep them all very
cosy.
Woodside has a lot of different types of animals. As well as cats and dogs we have rabbits, guinea
pigs, gerbils, ponies, goats, pigs, sheep and some other little furry friends. We look after all the pets
until they can find their own new family.
At the moment we are very busy caring for some very young kittens and their mums. We also have lots
of adult cats waiting for homes but because the kittens are so cute they are chosen before the older
ones. It just means that the grown up cats have to stay with us a little bit longer.
Thank you so much for helping us, without caring people like you we would not be able to look after
so many pets.
Kind regards
Carole Bowles MBE
We also say thank you and goodbye to our
neighbour, Mrs Cooke, who has been voluntarily knitting with our Knitting Club children for the
past three years. We are very grateful to her for
passing on her enthusiasm
wealth of knitting
experience and send her
our very best wishes.
Plymouth Schoolboy Trials
Well done to Jay 5, Herbie 5L, Sam 5O,
Daniel 5M and Jake 5O for being selected
for Round One of the Plymouth Schoolboy
Football
trials last week. Good luck to Herbie and
Jake who will be going on to Round Two next
week. Great work boys!
Golden Book for week ending Friday 10th June 1B Fraser for amazing progress in phonics.
1KH Grace for interesting ideas about pirates and trying hard to use conjunctions when writing
sentences.
1T Jake for managing his own behaviour positively and for being a helpful eco monitor last week.
2FN Jack for approaching all his learning with great enthusiasm, especially his writing.
2H Sophie for super writing of a recount.
2K Layla for super understanding about African habitats and non-fiction books.
Politeness Award
1B Vinnie for always saying please and thank you and for saying lovely things to your friends.
Music Tuition
If you have still not paid your Summer Term
Tuition Fees, can you please pay by 20th June
to ensure your child’s tuition can continue. A
text and email reminder have been sent to
remind you of the outstanding amount.
Thank You Mrs Patey!
Congratulations to Mrs Patey, our School Crossing Patroller who
has been recognised by the Local Authority for keeping our
children, as well as other members of our community, safe on
the roads around Goosewell School for the past 15 years! Mrs
Patey does a fantastic job, with a friendly smile, in all weathers
and is a familiar face to many of our children and parents. A
well deserved recognition for a vital member of our Goosewell
family. Thank you Mrs Patey and here’s to the next 15 years!
Dogs Onsite Please remember that dogs are not allowed onto school grounds, or
tethered to the school gates, particularly in the warmer weather. Recently, a dog has
been left by the Year 2 gate, barking loudly, which is unfair to both the dog and to
those children who may have a fear of dogs.
Lost Property
Would you please check your child’s school cardigan to ensure that they
have the correct one. Isabella 5O and Daisy 3H have both lost two
cardigans each and they are all clearly named. If you find any of the
cardigans would you please pass them to your child’s teacher or to the
school office.
100% Attendance
Well done to
Anthony FEH, Amy 4G and Livvy 6R who have all received a £10 book token for
100% attendance in Term 5.
Ready for the Residentials!
All the very best to Year 6 children who are taking part in their outdoor
education survival days next week. Their residential experience will include
camping in a clearing close to the lower banks of the River Dart, cooking from raw ingredients,
canoeing, tree climbing, developing teamwork and managing without hot water or electricity
for three days and two nights!
Year 4 children will be visiting London for two action packed
days next Thursday and Friday visiting the Houses of Parliament,
the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery, Buckingham
Palace, Trafalgar Square, watching Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and travelling on the
London Underground and so much more! Have fun everyone!
Junior Ten Tors Well done to our Year 6 Junior Ten Tors team who walked 19 miles last
Friday and Saturday, interrupted by an overnight camp out on Dartmoor. The children were
fantastic at navigating themselves from tor to tor and worked brilliantly as a team. Well
done Ella, Holly, Liam, Noah, Lily, Jack, Edward and Evie! Thank you to Mrs Williams and Mr
Case who have trained and developed leadership skills in the children as well as supervising
their walks.
Pupil Success
Well done to Poppy FAH who has achieved her Stage 5 Trampolining certificate and to
Charlotte 1KH who has gained her 4th Star Black Belt in Hybrid Mixed Martial Arts.
Congratulations to Thomas who recently took part in a swimming
competition with Plymouth Leander, coming 5th for an IM swim (Butterfly, Backstroke,
Breaststroke, Freestyle), 4th for a 200m Freestyle and 5th for 100m Breaststroke. Well
done all of you talented children.
