So Many Choices …
• So confusing–Which one should you choose?
–Why are there so many?
–Do we even need all of these translations?
![Page 15: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

The Need for Translations
• The Bible was written in three languages–Old Testament
• Hebrew
• Aramaic
–New Testament• Koine Greek
![Page 17: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
![Page 18: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
The King James Version has been good enough for almost 400 years, why change from it?
![Page 19: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Why the need?
• King James Version you have is not the original King James Version–It’s not a bad translation, just needs
to be updated for the changes to the English language
![Page 20: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Why the need?
• King James Version was one of many available in English at that time.–John Wycliffe had begun translating
in 1380 from the Latin Vulgate–Adhelm – Psalms in the late 7th
century–Bede – Gospel of John by 735 AD
![Page 21: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Early Translations
• The Tyndale Bible - 1525• The Coverdale Bible – 1535• The Matthew’s Bible – 1537• Taverner’s Bible – 1539• The Great Bible – 1539• The Geneva Bible – 1560• The Bishop’s Bible – 1568
![Page 22: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Early Translations
• The Douay-Rheims Bible–NT – 1582
–OT – 1609
• By 1611, there were already 8 translations available, all less than 100 years old
• All included the Appocrypha
![Page 23: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Why the need?
• Even Jesus used a modern translation–Jesus quoted from the Septuagint
version of the OT scriptures more often than from Hebrew
–Septuagint was translated around 285 BC
![Page 24: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Why the need?
• Languages change–The meaning of words change over
time
–Some are no longer considered acceptable speech
–Other Words become obsolete
![Page 25: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
![Page 26: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Danger of “Modern Translations”
• Not all translations are done well–In fact, some cannot even be
properly called a translation, but are in fact a paraphrase.
![Page 27: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Danger of “Modern Translations”
• Methods of Translating–Formal Equivalence
• attempts to render the text word-for-word
![Page 28: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Danger of “Modern Translations”
• Methods of Translating–Formal Equivalence
–Dynamic Equivalence• attempts to convey the thought expressed in a source text
![Page 29: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Danger of “Modern Translations”
• Methods of Translating–Formal Equivalence
–Dynamic Equivalence
–Idiomatic or Paraphrastic translation• attempts to paraphrase the ideas of the Scriptures and use modern idioms to get the point across
![Page 30: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Genesis 1:1-2 – GNB/TEV
“In the beginning, when God created the universe, 2 the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in
total darkness, and the power of God was moving over the water.”
![Page 31: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Genesis 1:1-2 – The Message
“1 -2First this: God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don't see. Earth was a soup of
nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness. God's Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss. ”
![Page 32: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Danger of “Modern Translations”
• The KJV uses the Dynamic Equivalence–Poetic Elizabethan / Shakespearean
language.
![Page 33: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Danger of “Modern Translations”
• The KJV uses the Dynamic Equivalence
• The ASV uses the Formal Equivalence–A very literal translation–Loses some of it’s readability
because of the difference in sentence structure
![Page 34: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Danger of “Modern Translations”
• The NASB tries to walk the line carefully between these two–Giving an easier read, without giving
up the literalness of the translation.
• The NIV attempts to blur the lines altogether–using a combination of Dynamic
Equivalence and Paraphrastic.
![Page 35: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Danger of “Modern Translations”
• Many modern translations fall under the sway of Premillenialist thought and Calvinistic doctrines.
![Page 36: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
2 Timothy 4:1-2 The Message
“1 -2 I can't impress this on you too strongly. God is looking over your
shoulder. Christ himself is the Judge, with the final say on everyone, living and dead. He is about to break into the open with his
rule, so proclaim the Message with intensity; keep on your watch. Challenge, warn, and urge your people. Don't ever
quit. Just keep it simple.”
![Page 37: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
2 Timothy 4:1-2 New Living

the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with
good teaching. ”
![Page 38: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
2 Timothy 4:1-2 KJV
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his
appearing and his kingdom; 2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of
season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.”
![Page 39: The Need for Translations](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56813525550346895d9c8d36/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
