The minaret
• The muezzin calls the people to prayer 5 times a day
• He calls them to pray from the minaret
• The call to prayer is called the adhan

• The domed ceiling symbollises the heavens above
• All purpose built mosques have a minaret and dome

• Shoes are removed before entering the worship area of the mosque

• Muslims need a washing area to perform wudu

• There are no seats in the main prayer room as the positions of prayer need room so that Muslims can perform a’raka

The prayer room
• In one wall in the prayer room the direction of Makkah will be shown
• This is called the mihrab

Friday prayers
• The Friday noon prayers are always the busiest times at the mosque
• It is when strict Muslims will pray together
• Which is why strict Muslims in a non-Muslim country will choose, if they can, to work for themselves or for another Muslim.

• The prayers in a mosque are led by the imam
• On Fridays he will speak to the congregation at the minbar- a raised platform in the prayer room

The times of prayers
• The times of prayers throughout the week are displayed in all mosques
• Times will vary country to country and even within countries to take account of dawn and sunset

The Qu’ran
• The Qu’ran is read• Children are taught
Arabic so that they can read and understand it

• The mosque runs religious schools to teach about the religion and to teach Arabic, the language of the Qu’ran
• These are called madrasah

• Men and women sit in separate areas within the mosque
• and are taught in separate groups in the mosque once they reach puberty

• Families often celebrate personal occasions at the mosque

Worship
The Mosque
Copy: The MOSQUE is the name of the Muslim place of worship.
It means “a place of prostration/prayer”.
The day when most Muslims try to visit the mosque is FRIDAY.
Washing area is for WUDU.
Times of prayer are displayed in the mosque
Inside the mosque is the prayer room
