and grow the number o production
crew members available to work in
the region.
The second strand ocussed on
the development o skills in post-
production areas such as editing,
animation and design. Courses
covered programmes including
Final Cut Pro, Motion, Pro Tools
and 3D Studio Max. Participants
had a chance to work on ve real-
lie projects or local companies,
producing corporate and marketing
videos with a real budget and
deadline. Each member o the team
took a role in the production team
and the projects were each very
successul.
In our third and most recent
strand, the New Media Factoryis trying to encourage the
development o local production
and post-production companies.
To build a sustainable production
and post-production industry
here, we need entrepreneurs and
were created to meet this need.
To urther expand and encourage
the development o the growing
creative and digital media industry
in the East Border Region, the New
Media Factory programme was
developed. A three strand approach
is helping in the development and
expansion o the broader creative
and digital media industry, in sectors
such as lm making, television and
video production, multi-media,
animation and music technology,
said David.
The rst strand o the programme
was to create greater interest in
the sector and a series o short
introductory courses in production
and location work, were run in
conjunction with the Louth, Newry
and Mourne Film Commission.
There was quite a lot o interest in
the camera, lighting, scriptwriting,
assistant direction, make-up and
production and this has helped local
talent learn new industry level skills
Beore the Bright Room was set
up in 2005, research had shown
that although there was great
potential or the television and
lm industry in the area, there
was a signicant production and
post-production skills shortage.
The local industry was embryonic
and ragmented and skilled
proessionals had to leave the
region to work elsewhere,
explained David.
The Bright Room acility was
created as a result o the Midas
Initiative, a creative and digital
media cluster programme,
ollowing the recognition o the
cross-border economic potential,
by the Regional Development
Centre unded through the EU
Interreg 111A Programme and theInternational Fund or Ireland.
Research had shown that a lack o
industry level inrastructure in the
region was hindering the industrys
development. The Bright Rooms

businesses to increase employment
opportunities and generate growth
in the sector. 12 local digital
media proessionals and budding
entrepreneurs are currently taking
part in a 12 week programme o
business training, mentoring and
networking at the Bright Room to
assist them in developing their own
innovative business ideas.
Mairtin de Barra, Director o the
Louth Newry and Mourne Film
Commission is very encouraged by
the dynamic growth o companies
during the last two years and the
opportunities this will bring or local
economic development.
The excellent high-tech Bright
Room acilities at DkIT have
been crucial to the possibility odeveloping this ast growing sector
in a region outside the existing lm
and tv production hubs in Dublin
and Belast.
David Tiernan Manager o the high defnition post production acility The Bright Room at DkIT, spoke about
project and what this means or the growth o the digital media, television and flm industry in the East Bord

It is a huge bonus to this cross-
border area and has acted as a
catalyst and supportive role in the
growth o the sector. More and
more digital media companies are
being set up here, like Big Mountain
Productions, Meedja and Zodiac,
with people moving back to the
area because they know that they
have all the acilities they need in
Dundalk, added Mairtin.
The overall Midas clustering
initiative or companies to pool
resources and share opportunities to
tender or larger projects has been
very successul.
Eight o the original cluster
companies have ormed a limited
company Midas Multimedia Ltd.
They are now able to use their jointskills and resources to work on very
large scale projects, which were
previously impossible to access,
bringing revenue and employment
to the area, he added.

At the heart o the Regional Development Programme
are the core principles o Innovation, Technology Transer
and Enterprise Development. And nowhere is this more
evident than in the Novation programme which helps many
fedgling businesses to grow into successul enterprises.
The Regional Development Centre, through its Novation
Programme managed by Sean MacEntee is proactive in nurturing
new business ideas and start-up businesses. Some o these
businesses come into contact with the Regional Development
Centre (RDC) when they embark on the twelve month Novation
Enterprise Platorm Programme (NEPP) business mentoring and
development initiative. The programme has helped over 60 start-
up and newly ormed business successes since it was set up over
six years ago, o which over 60% are still in business today, a high
level o achievement. Between them, these businesses employ
over 400 people and have a collective turnover o approximately
30m per annum.
A measure o success at the RDC can be seen at morningcoee, when the air in the central atrium buzzes with creativity
and swapped business know-how. The inormal conversations
between the entrepreneurial tenants, researchers and business
mentors oten lead to innovative ideas which have commercial
potential.
e s
The NEPP programme is aimed at graduate level participants developing an innovative product or service in
a knowledge based, IT or high technology sector. Brothers Conor and Fintan McCormack, with mechanical
and electrical engineering backgrounds, are developing a new and highly innovative prototype machine, the
Mcor Matrix. This builds 3D prototype models using A4 paper as its eedstock, a very economical material to
use, compared to ABS plastic or plaster. The idea was completely new in Ireland and is in strong demand by
design engineers. The new company MCOR technologies, now has an extensive potential global market in therapidly expanding 3D printer market and has just won best Innovator Company rom Louth County Enterprise
Board Awards.
We set up the fedgling
company in June 2005 and at
that stage we hadnt heard
about the RDC, said Conor.
We have beneted rom
the really extensive business
support, mentoring, business
planning and the great
networking and contacts we
have gained over the last year.
We are now at a very crucial
stage in our development
moving rom the research
and development to the
ull commercialisation and
production stage, added
Conor.

Keith Bailey and Kornelia Rybackaboth achieved exceptional success,as qualied industry proessionals orApples Final Cut Pro, ater startingout with no previous experience othis lm editing sotware.
Both iMedia students took themodular Digital Diversity course, anintroduction to digital media andlearnt about Adobe Photoshop ordigital imaging, Dreamweaver orweb authoring, Flash Animation andFinal Cut Pro or lm editing.
They both scored such high marksin their Final Cut Pro module, that
the Digital Diversity programmemanager, Eamonn Quinn persuadedApple to let them sit their Train theTrainer courses, which will now allowthem both to train others.
Keith and Kornelia have beenexceptional students and had a realfair or the Final Cut Pro sotwareprogramme, even though they werenew to this sotware and the courseswere quite a challenge, he said.
We have run three iMediaprogrammes with cross borderdigital media courses in Dundalk,Banbridge and Armagh and eachtime, I have been amazed at thetalent, skills and interest o theparticipants. Quite a ew have goneon to use their new skills eitherin their jobs, or to create a newbusiness opportunity, or even justto be able to teach their childrenabout animation or edit the amilyvideos.
Keith Bailey, a proessional engineerwith a PhD in aerodynamics issetting up his own business Engility,
using his new sotware trainingskills.
Although I had used Photoshopand Dreamweaver beore, I had noexperience o Final Cut Pro, saidKeith. I really liked the packageand was lucky enough to scorereally highly in the FCP5 userexam.
It made sense or me to becomea trainer and it works in well with
my new business. I am really glad tohave had the opportunity to achievethis level thanks to the iMediacourse.
