LINK PUBLIC & WATERFRONT ELEVATE THE BUILDING
Inspired by maritime forms (water, waves, wind & ships) the building is designed to symbolically refl ect the impact of the museum on the national and international art scene by “causing waves” and by being visible even further than the harbor of Helsinki. The building, as well as the national art scene of Finland, is in a constant state of change which is articulated by the fl uid forms and the dynamic shapes of the exterior. Regional timber used for parts of the structure and in the interior creates the high quality appearance of a luxurious sail ship.
To build the new Guggenheim museum in Helsinki is most likely one of the most interesting and challenging projects of this time. The outstanding site at the waterfront of Helsinki’s harbor, the proximity of the museum to the vivid city center of Helsinki and the precious sights and parks that surround this new building are just a few constraints that need to be considered for this proposal. The immense impact of the museum on the city of Helsinki, but also on the national and international art scene adds additional facets of responsibilities to this project. This proposal respects the existing surroundings and integrates itself within the built und public context by enhancing the quality of the adjunct public spaces. Its design is taking on the challenge to be the new sight in the city by communicating with the city and the world at the same time by its appearance and its particular function as a lighthouse.The proposed museum is linking the park with the waterfront in the harbor. The public gains access to the waterfront at the
main entrance in the north by generating a public plaza with an adjunct boardwalk along the museum. By lifting up the exhibition space the park is extended on the roof of the building and provides outdoor space for exhibitions, perfor-mances and public life with marvelous views over the harbor by granting the important views from the park towards the cathedral. The elevated museum improves the overall quality of all public spaces (plaza, terrace, cafes & restaurant) while securing the access and usability of the terminal and the dock level.
The south end of the building is designed as a tower, that frames the views from the city, but also functions as a welcoming screen towards the sea and the arriving cruise ships. The tower is visible from the sea and throughout the city so that the museum is becoming the new light house of Helsinki.

Louise Bourgeois
Maman (1999) is a bronze, stainless steel, and marble sculpture by the artist Louise
Bourgeois. The sculpture, which depicts a spider, is among the world's largest,
measuring over 30 ft high and over 33 ft wide (927 x 891 x 1024 cm).[1] It includes a sac
containing 26 marble eggs and its abdomen and thorax are made up of ribbed bronze.
The title is the familiar French word for Mother. The sculpture was created in 1999 by
Bourgeois as a part of her inaugural commission of The Unilever Series (2000), in
the Turbine Hall at London's Tate Modern.[1] This original was created in steel, with an
edition of six subsequent castings in bronze.
EXHIBITION NOVUMThe exhibition is supported by the use of new technology to focus on the process of art in all possible aspects. Modular sliding walls hold stackable LFD screens that can provide additional informa-tion for an artwork or even show its making of.The use of transparent LCD screen for augmented reality guid-ed tours or information screens is improving the link between the visitor and the art on display. By arranging the ateliers and the exhibition on the waterfront and by overlapping them with an transparent multimedia façade “art in progress” is merged with the public life and art is now an integral part of Helsinki’s daily life.
ORGANISATION & PROGRAMThe impressive lobby is welcoming the visitors and elevates them to the exhibi-tion level. The exhibition space is providing the maximum of fl exibility through its column less execution. Partition walls can be arranged according to exhibition needs and can provide or block natural lighting as required. The performance hall and its foyer are located on top of the lobby with views to the park and the harbor with access to and from the roof top terrace.The rooftop terrace is the main entrance for the multipurpose hall and the café located in the tower. The tower provides open views over the harbor and the park and holds a double story atrium for various events. On top of the tower we fi nd the public restaurant and the observation deck with outstanding views over the city of Helsinki.
FLEXIBLE LFD SCREENS FOR DIGITAL CONTENTFlexibe frameless LFD screens can be placed next to the artwork to display the process of art and background information to the related artist. Due to a modular build up of this system it can be installed in every position.
SLIDABLE TRANSPARENT LCD SCREENSIn the same way fl exible panels can be slided in front of diplayed art. An
integrated transparent LCD screen gives background information and allows the visitor to interact with the artwork. An unique and innovative
way of providing background information.
AUGMENTED REALITY GUIDED TOURSPortable transparent screens and tablets are the guides for the visitors. As soon you hold them in front of the art piece infomation occures on the screen and pushes the visitor into the world of art.

INTEGRATED ATELIERS OF ARTISTSIn order to highlight the shopping area and to emphasis the work of young fi nnish
artists there is a row of ateliers integrated in the facade of the building. In these ateliers, there is space for the artist to work and sell their artwork. Visitors entering the Guggenheim shop have the opportunity to get a view onto art in progress .
They have the chance to get in contact with the artist and the chance to buy a piece of art directly from the artist. A fantastic experience for every Guggenheim
fan. The Guggenheim Museum can offer these spaces annually to potential canditates and underlines with this smart move its mission to support young artists.
As the ateliers are visible through the outside of the facade, the public can participate as well. The art scene and public life is merged.

A FLEXIBLE MUSEUM WITHIN AN OUTSTANDING SPACE EXPERIENCE AND UNIQUE NEW WAYS OF PRESENTING ART & DESIGN

Besides a perfect insulation of cellulose and the use of local timber the museum will be supported by various alternative energy sources. Water of the harbor is used to heat/ cool the concrete slabs in the building. In combination with the natural ventilation resulting from the unique shapes the mu-seum can abstain from air conditioning. Collected and purifi ed rain water is used for the restrooms and other secondary water systems. The tower is shaped to channel the main wind and holds wind turbines. Together with PV panels on the roof the museum can cover the majority of its electricity consumption which is reduced to a minimum by utilizing LED for the façade and general lighting.
RAINWATER COLLECTIONRainwater is collected and purifi ed and is used for the secondary water circle of the musuem (restrooms, ...)
ENERGY SAVING LED LIGHTINGThe media facade and the genral lighting is using LED technology. This guaranties a minimum energy consumption.
SEA WATER FOR HEATING AND COOLINGThe seawater of the harbor is used to support the heating and cooling system of the building. Cold water is pumped into the concrete slabs in the summer to cool down the interior.During the winter the different temperature between the water and the air is used to heat the building slabs.

WIND TUNNEL WITH TURBINESThe shells of the tower are shaped according to the main wind direction. Its shape compresses the wind and pushes the tur-bines to a maximum effi ciency.
HIGHLY INSULATED BUILDINGIn order to create a museum with the lowest possible energy consumption, the whole shell needs to be insulated perfectly. For this matter the secondary structure is covered completely with a regenarative wooden insulation material. The spaces in between the structure is fi lled up with cellulosic fl akes. Due to the constructive height of this layer the building becomes a highly insulated shell.The glazing on the sides are thermically separated from the main structure. Insulated profi les and three layers of glass are ensuring a maximum of solar gains and a minimum of loss of energy.
PV PANELSA central area of the roof is used to
produce solar energy.
NATURAL VENTILATIONThe building is ventilated naturally. The shapes
of the lobby and the tower act as a channel to lead the hot air to the top of the buidling where
the air is exhausted. In combination with the wa-ter cooled concrete slabs a pleasant and stable
climate is secured.
SOLAR TUBESIntegrated into the roof, the solar tubes are
supporting the warm water supply of the building.
