Heads Up!
Hi all,
Welcome to Kentmere's new newsletter!
Kentmere News will be full of different and interesting
articles and we are excited to see how it progresses.
I am pleased to inform you earlier this month Kentmere Academy was
nominated as a finalist in the Educated Awards for the Most Inspirational
Primary School. We were delighted to be placed second in this category.
I would like to thank all members of the school community for their hard work
and support.
We have had a very successful month with a great deal of progress being made in
the children's learning. It is assessment week this week and next week, where we
will see the full extent of their progress. Please could I remind you to read every
day at home with your child. This will really benefit their fluency and comprehen-
sion skills. It is essential this is then recorded in their reading diary.
Thank you in anticipation.
Please keep a close eye on dates as the Christmas period is a busy time when we
would be delighted for you to join us.
Don’t be late, set your alarm, to arrive on time.
Please do not arrive late for your child’s Christmas Performance. The
children work very hard for this and lateness causes disruption to the
whole production.
Please note that the school gates close at 8.27am. This is to
ensure that all the children are in their classrooms ready for
registration at 8.30am prompt.
Disco Fever - Halloween Edition!
Our Halloween Disco is one of the most popular
events on the school calendar. Each year on a
week of Autumn half term, the school hall is
transformed and the children can enjoy an hour of
fun filled spookiness!
Eco Update
The Eco-council have purchased 10 litter
pickers and have set up a rota so that
children can check and improve the school
grounds every playtime and lunchtime. We
want our school grounds to look the best
that they can.
Children are encouraged to come in fancy
dress and there is a DJ, drinks and a snack.
Some fantastic games were played - corners
was a big favourite this year!
This year’s costumes were marvellous,
so a big thank you to all the parents
and children for the fabulous effort!
AN INTERVIEW WITH
Mr Dale Nixon
Hi my name is Mr Nixon and I work at Kentmere Academy and Nursery
as the Site Manager/Caretaker.
I open the school at 7.00am in the mornings, which means I have to eat
my breakfast at 6.00am! I never miss my breakfast because this is the most
important meal of the day.
You may see me in the yard doing litter picking so I need your help in
making sure we all put our litter in the bins. You
may sometimes see me on the roof as I have to
clean all the leaves out of the guttering so that the
rain does not overflow and cause us lots of puddles
in the playground. I also have to make sure that the
school is clean and tidy ready for school everyday.
At the weekend I like to go bike riding.
My favourite snack is cheese & onion crisps and my favourite food is
cheese & onion pie.
I do not like tomatoes and I do not like mushrooms…..yuk!!!
Breakfast at 6.00am—Yum Yum
Let’s get physical
What a packed term we have had so far with our sporting competitions and
clubs!
A big well done to everyone who has taken part and
represented our school. Since September, we have
taken part in a Y3/4 Football festival, getting to grips
with our new Y3/4 football team and sizing up the
opposition. Kentmere played spectacularly, with some
super goalkeeping from Daniel and brazen tackles
from Faizan.
We also took 2 teams of eager Cross Country runners to
Beech House in October, to race against more than 12 teams
across muddy fields, tough hills and tall grass. All of the run-
ners who took part were a credit to the school, showing great
stamina and determination.
Well done to the following children who made it onto the leader board of the
top 16 for Rochdale!
Laraib - 13th place for Y4
Maja and Aryan- joint 16th place for Y5/6
If you would like to take part in future competitions, sign up to clubs, try your
best, turn up every week and you could be picked!
Spring term competitions;
Y5/6 Boys football Y5/6 Boys Tuesday 15th Jan
Y5/6 Dodgeball Y5/6 Mixed Thursday 21st March

Residential News!
From Friday 9th November to Sunday 11th November, a selection of year 5/6
children had a fantastic time on a residential trip at Robinwood.
They got to do many activities that included
canoeing, caving, climbing, the giant swing and
archery! The children had a fantastic time and
learnt lots of new skills. All our children were a
credit to the school, so well done and thank you.
Below are some brilliant comments that the leader of our group gave our children
throughout the weekend.
“With your acrobatic skills, catching the bar on the Trapeze and swinging
majestically above the rest of the group was no problem for
you.”
“Your Archery skills were so good you will now be known as
the Maid Marian of Robinwood.”
“Your communication skills on the Nightline were marvellous -
you passed loads of important message back to your team,
keeping them informed and helping them through the crazy
course.”
“Your teamwork and encourage-
ment helped your whole team survive the challenges
of the Knights Training Ground and complete the
Challenge Course.”

Nursery
The nursery children had a great day celebrating Diwali. We watched a
video and talked about Diwali and how it is celebrated. We created
Divas using bright coloured paper and sequins.
We made sprinkle sticks using bread sticks,
chocolate and sprinkles to represent fireworks
and had a henna pattern on our fingers.
One of our nursery children shared with us the traditional clothes that
she wears to celebrate Diwali and her family kindly shared some lovely
decorations.
We also tried some delicious foods such as
samosa, bhaji with mango chutney and cucumber
mint raita, salad and to finish a selection of fresh
fruit.
To end the day we danced with
ribbons to some Diwali music.

Reception
The children in reception have had a visit from a fairy!
She wrote a note to us asking if she could stay in our
classroom. The note was so tiny we needed a
magnifying glass to read it!
So far we know her name is Alice and we have been
asking lots of different questions to find out more about her.
We have asked questions such as what colour is your hair?
Can you fly?
What do you like to eat?
Do we have to be quiet?
The children have been busy writing notes to Alice the Fairy in our writing area
and she has written back to us.

Year 1/2 Mrs Hancock
To introduce our new topic (Moon Zoom) the children found a crashed
rocket in school. They investigated the area to describe what they could
see. Using this knowledge, they wrote a report for the police including
adjectives to make it clear.
This led on to the caretaker
finding an alien egg so we
discussed how to look after eggs.
Luckily, we received a message from the alien mother, who told us how
to care for it until she could return for it. The children enjoyed writing
an advice booklet explaining how to care for the egg or alien
until mum could return.

Year 3/4 VHS KC
Class 6 enjoyed a Roman Art day. We learnt about Mosaics and the history
behind them.
We then designed our own Mosaic, making sure it was
symmetrical.
Next, we looked at Roman shields and designed our own. We then painted our
shields and using a mosaic technique, created a design of our own. We began by
designing the Mosaics on squared paper, using the squares to help us with our
symmetrical pattern. Then we moved onto plain paper and created our pattern
freehand. Finally, we painted our cardboard rectangles using red paint and used
squares of paper to make our symmetrical Roman shields.
The children really enjoyed the creativity of the activity and had a brilliant day,
learning lots of new skills.
