How to increase involvement in campus events at Jacksonville University?
During the 2013 spring semester, an online survey of the JU community was conducted to help answer this question. A student research group in the Communication Department of JU send out emails to approximately 4100 people of the Jacksonville University community, including students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The purpose of the survey was to help discover ways that JU can provide a more fun and enriching experience for its community.

8The survey got feedback from 474 respondents, answering 15 questions concerning the issue. When asked about campus activity awareness 85.65 percent said they were aware of campus events, while 14.35 percent said they are not aware. Even though 65.35 percent of the respondents attend campus events throughout the semester, only 11.39 percent participate in more than ten campus events a semester and the highest number (40.72 percent) said they participate in one to three events a semester.
The two most common reasons respondents said they did not attend campus events were scheduling conflicts (40.93 percent) and reluctance to come back to campus after hours (28.90 percent). This can be linked back to the fact that JU is a commuter heavy campus. Only 23 percent of the respondents live on campus while 77 percent live off campus, out of which 53.28 percent are students.
The survey showed that 59.07 percent of the respondents do not affiliate with a campus organization and only 2.52 percent involve in student media. This may be of concern to JU since student media should ideally be in position to inform the community, and yet only 3.59 percent of the respondents receive their information through student media.
The two types of events respondents said they’d most like to see offered more were music concerts (33.97 percent) and festivals (20.25 percent). The survey also gives suggestions on how to better reach the JU community. Further research should be conducted to develope a strategy to better reach those who do not attend campus events and do not want to come back to campus for events.
