The Men's Open Masters title
of the 33rd Canon Malaysian
International Open remained in
Malaysia as top seed, Adrian
Ang emerged champion while
debutant, Kelly Kulick gave
America their second victory in
the Ladies' division.
Both the champions were
forced into the third and decid-
ing game in the best-of-3 finals
when the contenders drew level
after the second game.
PBA Tournament of
Champion winner and top seed,
Kelly Kulick retained the 33rd
Canon Malaysian International
Open ladies' crown for America
following the footsteps of her
compatriot, Carolyn Dorrin-Ballard, who won last
year. But her victory did not come easy after being
stretched to the third and deciding game in the
finals against challenger, Chien Hsiu-Lan of
Chinese Taipei. Two unlucky splits in the first game
put the American on the back foot losing 184-211 to
the Taiwanese. A quick ball change made the differ-
ence in the second game when she bounced back
with a 218-212 victory to force the deciding game.
Although Chien started the third match with a dou-
ble, Kulick again was forced to trail by two frames
after a split in the second frame.
A turkey from frame four and another double in
the eighth and ninth frames gave Kulick a breather
as Chien failed to knock down a single strike after
her early double which gave Kulick a 211-201 vic-
tory. "Yes it was very exciting. Each game came
down to the last frame," said the delighted Kelly
Kulick. "The lanes were drastically different and I
had to make many changes. So I went to my bag
and had to find a suitable ball. I'm glad I made the
right change early." Kulick breezed through to the
finals after beating No. 5 seed, Liza Del Rosario, 2-
0 in the first semi-finals while Chien took three
games to defeat 2008 AMF
World Cup champion and No. 3
seed, Jasmine Yeong-Nathan of
Singapore, 2-1 in the other
semi. Chien had an easier pas-
sage into the semi-finals when
he knocked out No. 7 seed,
Tannya Roumimper of
Indonesia, 2-0 in the quarter-
finals while the Kulick needed
three games to beat No. 8 seed,
Siti Safiyah Amirah of Malaysia
in her quarter-finals round.
Kelly Kulick won RM15,000
and Chien Hsiu-Lan settled for
RM7,500. Yeong-Nathan and
Rosario fourth took home
RM4,000 each as losing semifi-
nalists.
In the men's division, top seed Adrian Ang nar-
rowly beat challenger, Osku Palermaa 163-147 as
both struggled in very difficult lane conditions. In
the second match, Palermaa got the better of Adrian
after the Finn made the changes quicker than the
Malaysian. Adrian was just unlucky when he could
not find a connecting strike to go down, 200-238
forcing a decider. Adrian got off to a better start
with a double as the Finn failed to repeat his form
shown in the second. The third game and match
appeared to have favored the Malaysian when
Adrian got a turkey while Palermaa opened in
frame 5.
Although Adrian got a double in frames 8 and 9,
an opened frame in the tenth gave the Finn a slim
chance after he fired a turkey from frame 7
onwards. Needing to strike out to beat Adrian,
Palermaa shot a solid pocket but left pin 10 stand-
ing.
Adrian celebrated his victory with 220-214. "All
I need to do was to focus on my game. I lost it a bit
and luckily I was able to get back my focus as the
game went on," confessed the 22-year-old newly-
crowned champion, Adrian Ang.

go? To a bowling event in Malaysia!
Now that’s love for the sport.
Wiseman went to be where the action is, at the 33rd
Canon Malaysian International Open and did it on his
own dollar for the second consecutive year.
It was a wise choice as he got to hang out with two of
the best women bowlers in the world and both ‘Jersey
Girls’ from Union County, New Jersey, Kelly Kulick,
winner of the PBA Tournament of Champions, PBA
Women’s World Championship and PBA Women’s
Series, and now added the 2010 Malaysian International
Open champion and Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, BJI bowler
of the decade holder of thirteen women’d tour titles,
four-time USBC champion and last year’s champion of

2 SPORTS REPORTER March 31 - April 6, 2010
Each year newcomers contin-
ue to enter the pro ranks. How
good are they? What kind of
attitude do they have? What are
their goals? Do they differ from
the aspiring pros of years ago?
Today's young bowlers are
better than good, and many are
sensational. They are the cream
of the crop emerging from the
ever more sophisticated junior
bowling programs, coaches’
clinics and camps and expanded
tournament schedules. They
hail from small towns of 7,000
and big towns of 7 million.
Some of them have all the
physical and mental tools and
lack only the final polishing
process that comes only with
experience, yet they can boast
more than a decade of varied
experience at very tender ages.
But the pro life can be different
from anything they have been
exposed to and it takes a period
of adjustment.
Attitudes are difficult to pin
down. There is no attitude,
except to succeed, and it boils
down to individual personalities
based on background, and that
includes family, education and
geography.
Some are brash and cocky,
don't care much for strict rules,
are individualists, and don't
care who knows it. They don't
want to know or care much
about what went on yesterday,
look only to today. More are on
the reserved side, looking to
find their way.
Almost all got their first expo-
sure to top championship bowl-
ing by watching the pros on TV.
Almost all are attempting to
achieve a lifetime dream of
making it as a pro bowler.
Their goals are simp1e. First,
they want to become the next
Parker Bohn III or Walter Ray
Williams Jr., and earn at the
least $100,000 per year. Failing
that lofty aim, they would like
to win enough to be comfortably
independent.
Next they would settle for
enough earnings to stay out long
enough to find out whether they
have it not. Finally, if all else
goes by the boards, they hope
not to embarrass themselves.
They come out, some fully
sponsored for a year or more,
others with barely enough to get
through a few weeks unless they
cash.
They accept bowling as a pro-
fessional sport, always have, but
too many expect bowling prize
money to be in the same ball
park golf, tennis and other
sports, and sometime the rude
awakening that this is not true,
jolts them.
They are better than their
counterparts of years ago. Most
are in better physical shape,
know more about the technical
side of the sport, and are eager
to learn more and more. Many
are college grads.
There is respect of the pro
stars, but there is little awe.
There is a confidence. Why not?
Bowling is a game of numbers
and aspiring pros have 300s and
800s and 230 averages, have
starred in various levels of play,
and been on top in their areas.
The common bond among
bowlers, newcomers or solid
veterans, is that they all know it
is difficult to make it as a pro
bowler. There are no fancy
bonus deals, few endorsements,
few weekly pay checks guaran-
teed, and not enough prize
funds so high that a bowler can
roll only when he feels like it
and still make a good living.
With all the thoughts of rich-
es, fame and glamour, there is
another basic sameness.
Bowling is an important part of
their lives and those close to
them, if not the most important.
They have a deep love for the
sport, for competition, and have
devoted much of their lives to
the quest.
The new crops of young pros,
men and women, do everyone
proud. And the "who are they"
names of today insure the future
star quality of the pro side of the
sport.

Brian Kretzer Wins First PBA TitleNORWICH, Conn. – Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio, ended his 167-
event winless streak Sunday, defeating 13-time Professional Bowlers
Association title winner Patrick Allen of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 629-566,
in the three-game title match of the Go RVing Match Play
Championship at Norwich Bowling and Entertainment Center.
Kretzer, at age 43, became the
sixth Lumber Liquidators PBA
Tour competitor to win his first
singles title during the 2009-10
season.
Kretzer, the No. 27 seed enter-
ing the 64-player single-elimina-
tion match play tournament, took
a 192-185 lead after the first
game, but ran away from Allen,
the No. 21 seed, in the second
game, 241-167. With an 81-pin
lead going into the final game, it
was a matter of filling frames.
Allen’s 214-196 win in the third
game wasn’t enough.
“It’s been a long time,” Kretzer
said. “I’m happy and I know my
mom’s happy. It’s nice to win,
whether it’s your first time or your 10th. I had a lot of success as an ama-
teur before I joined the PBA, but this kind of completes my career. Now
I’ve won at every level.”
Kretzer said his new-found success was a matter of turning back the
clock. “I went back to what I was doing in the `90s when I was an ama-
teur,” he said. “I was carrying the ball through my approach instead of
pushing. Now I can feel the ball again. I can do what I want to do with
it. I could always hook the ball, but now I can play straighter, too.”
Playing straighter was critical because the Go RVing Match Play
Championship used a different lane condition on each lane. The left lane
on each pair used a long-oil Shark pattern while the right lane used a
shorter Cheetah lane condition. Playing straighter on the Cheetah lane
was the key to Kretzer’s victory, and solving the Cheetah lane was the
primary reason Allen struggled.
“The Cheetah lane was a little different than yesterday, but I threw a
lot of bad shots,” Allen said. “I never got comfortable on that lane, and
when you are playing two extremely different angles, if you’re not com-
fortable on one lane, you’re not going to be comfortable on either.
“Brian took advantage. When you get a guy down in a tournament like
this, you’re supposed to stomp on him, and that’s what he did.”
Kretzer and Allen both grew up in the game as high-stakes amateurs.
“We’ve know each other since we were kids,” Kretzer said. “We crossed
paths a lot, even though we didn’t bowl each other head-to-head very
often. He went on to win 13 PBA titles and I hadn’t won until today, but
I do have one thing over him now,” Kretzer smiled. “He’s never beaten
me in a title match.”

Bill Bunetta Bill Bunetta , a United States
Bowling Congress Hall of Fame
member, died March 22 in Fresno,
Calif., of heart failure. He was 90.
A Professional Bowlers
Association charter member, he
was asked to be the PBA’s first
commissioner when the pro tour
was formed in 1958. But since he
still was competitive as a bowler, he
turned down the position.
He won his only PBA Tour title
in Fairless Hills, Pa., in 1960, and
was inducted into the USBC Hall
of Fame in 1968.
In addition to being a talented
competitor on the lanes, Bunetta
was one of bowling’s most
respected instructors. His inven-
tive coaching techniques included
the innovative “3-6-9” spare-
shooting system, and he spent
many years conducting clinics and
exhibitions. He was often sought
out by many young professionals
for coaching assistance.
In 1995, at age 76, he became
the oldest bowler in history to roll
back-to-back 300 games.

States Bowling Congress Hall of
Fame member, died March 22 in
Hermitage, Pa., after a brief ill-
ness. He was 80.
Beach was inducted into the
American Bowling Congress
(now USBC) Hall of Fame in
1991. He won five ABC titles,
including the 1972 ABC
Masters.
Following his service in the
U.S. Air Force, Beach worked as
a barber in Sharon, Pa., before
joining the Professional Bowlers
Association Tour in 1966. In
1972, he provided one of the
most exciting moments in
Masters’ history when he came
through the losers’ bracket to
defeat defending Masters’ cham-
pion Jim Godman. Beach rolled
clutch shots in the finals frames
of each match, winning the first
match, 889-876, before edging
Godman 919-914 for the title.
Also in 1972, Beach won the
Don Carter Ebonite Open in
Arcadia, Calif., and picked up
his third and fourth ABC (now
USBC Open) titles by winning
Classic singles and all-events
titles. He was selected to the
Bowlers Journal All-American
Team that year.
