From the Pastor’s Desk: “There is Good News” Over the past several months it seems that we have been inundated with bad news.
From the unrelenting street violence, failing school systems, racial hostilities, natural
disasters, and acrimonious politics to our personal and private challenges, it seems that
we have been pushed to the breaking point with bad news! In the midst of the unending
sequence of bad news, there is a more powerful message for today. This is the Advent
Season, and there is Good News!
As a matter of fact, the whole point of the message of Christmas is that there is good
news! I wonder if the shepherds watching their flocks felt the same way. You know,
they were just going about their business that day when the angel showed up with a
message. Life was rather routine, or so it seems. We, too, have been caught up in the
routine of life only to come to this season with the reminder that God has a message
for us today.
Here is the message—there is good news for your life! In spite of the challenges, or
even the routine realities of life, there is good news! The news is that God’s promise
has come to pass, Jesus Christ is born! That is good news. The Word of God has
become flesh, real enough to share in the experiences of our lives—good or bad. That
is good news! Most of all, the birth of Jesus ushers in the season of the gospel—which
means literally, “good news”.
In the days to come, celebrate family, share and exchange gifts, enjoy family meals. But
most of all, celebrate the good news that has come into our lives once again. Jesus
Christ is born! That is good news!!!
In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be
registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All
went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee
to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and
family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was
expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave
birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because
there was no place for them in the inn.
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by
night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around
them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am
bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of
David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child
wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and
on earth peace among those whom he favors!” Luke 2:1-14 NRSV

What Else Has Been Happening at DMCC?
Deacon Willie and Deaconess Ruth Andrews are the parents
of our own Min. Earl Andrews, and are featured in the 2019
Community Inspiration Calendar, presented by the March
Family. The Andrews are members of Rising Mt. Zion Baptist
Church in Richmond VA. Read their inspiring story and
words of wisdom on the calendar’s September page.

On Sunday, October 28, the newly formed Children’s
Choir closed the 10:30 am worship service, and deliv-
ered the Meditation. Under the direction of Sis. Joy
Dobson, they gave a spirited rendition of “Be Ye Stead-
fast”; and literally lifted the congregation to its feet. The
choir meets for rehearsal on Mondays at 5 pm.
DMCC hosted the Annual Regional Banquet of the
ICCC Eastern Zone, Region B, Area 1, Samaritan Men
and Women’s Christian Fellowship on Saturday, Novem-
ber 10. The theme was “Gateway to Glory”.
The first Book Club Meeting was held on Saturday,
December 1. The group read and discussed “Under Fire:
Reporting from the Front Lines of the Trump White House”
by April Ryan, White House Correspondent, journalist,
CNN political analyst, and also a graduate of Morgan
State University.
The Annual Budget Meeting was held on Saturday,
December 8, 2018. The Board of Trustees presented the
proposed budget for 2019, which was unchanged from
the 2018 budget. Members were encouraged to prioritize
tithes and offerings before other offerings.
In support of the Young Women’s Conference at
Renaissance Academy, Douglas members purchased $5
gift cards and bags of candy for 60 young women. Mary
Summers and Melissa Copeland made dozens of
elaborately decorated cookies, and Rev. Vivian Ferebee
made her gourmet chocolate dipped potato chips. The
items were donated for the Bags of Affirmation that
were distributed during the conference.
Winter Extravaganza on Saturday, December 22, was
truly an extravaganza of fun and entertainment for our
little children ages 3-7. Karen Orange and her daughter
Mia transformed Founders’ Hall into a “winter wonder-
land” and offered parents the opportunity to leave the
kids to enjoy an afternoon of cookies, crafts, and games,
movie and so much more!

Jackie Wilder has been a Meals on Wheels volunteer for 40 years! At the
Fall Volunteer Appreciation held at the Engineers Club, Meals on Wheels
of Central Maryland honored Sis. Jackie for her 40 years of dedicated
service. Sis. Jackie’s volunteer service began in September, 1978 and
continues to this day.
To put that in perspective, in September of 1978, Rev. Marion C. Bascom
was the Pastor of Douglas Church, Jimmy Carter was in the White
House, the average cost of a new home was $54,800, a gallon of gas was
$.65, and the average annual income was $17,000. In addition, there was
no FaceBook, Instagram or Twitter, and our church was 53 years old.
Sis. Jackie has served faithfully since then and continues to delivers meals
each Monday to Meals on Wheels clients who are homebound due to
age or physical condition.
Congratulations, Sis. Jackie on your many years of dedicated service!

Douglas attends performance of Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity
The second event planned by the newly formed Activities Committee was
ArtsCentric’s performance of Black Nativity on Sunday, December 9th at the Motor
House. Our own Crystal Freeman (pictured on the right) was a part of the talented
group of singers in a production that featured original music by Cedric Lyles.
The intimate theater was packed, and the audience was treated to a powerful
performance of songs, dance and music; with beautiful costumes and creative
staging. Act One told the story of the birth of Jesus through traditional and
contemporary Christmas music. The scene of Act Two brought us to a church setting and the story of a modern day
mother and son. The music was so inspiring and exhilarating that it literally “took us to church”, and had the audience
singing, standing, clapping and rejoicing.
Thanks to the Activities Committee for planning this great event! We are looking forward to the plans for 2019.

By Tim Rice Thank you from the DMCC Project HEAL Health Advisors
This is just a thank you note of appreciation to all of
the amazing men and women who participated in the
Project HEAL workshops! Rev. Lottie and I were
indeed inspired by your sincere participation in all
three sessions. Your interest and concerns were
invaluable in helping to disseminate the information
concerning serious health issues that desperately need
addressing in the African American community.
We also sincerely thank Rev. Rhonda Boozer-Yeary
and the Project HEAL team for choosing Douglas
Memorial Community Church as one of the 14 African
American churches in Maryland to be a part of this project. Rev. Lottie and I received training as Community
Health Advisors by the Project HEAL staff. The Project HEAL materials and approach provided accurate and
the most current information concerning the three major cancers that plague African Americans. Breast,
prostate and colorectal cancers are major killers in our communities if left untreated!
We pray that you have received some helpful information from the project and that you will continue to
maintain a healthy lifestyle for yourself and your loved ones. We thank you, and God bless you all.
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1 KJV
The DMCC Meals on Wheels team is in desperate need of volunteers. If you have a few hours
in the morning, please consider volunteering with this dedicated team. Your help is needed!
Delivery volunteers are needed Monday through Friday to deliver
meals to homebound seniors and disabled individuals. You may
volunteer once a week, once a month, or whenever your
schedule permits.
Driver/visitors teams deliver meals to homebound individuals. Meals
are taken to the door of each home and you may spend a few
minutes talking with the client. Drivers must be 18+ years of age
with a valid Maryland driver’s license and their own vehicle.
To volunteer, or get more information, please contact the church office
or the Meals on Wheels office 410-558-0827.

It’s time to update our church membership database!
In January, an update card will be placed in the worship guide. Please fill out the card to confirm your con-
tact information or make updates and corrections. Even if nothing has changed, it will be helpful to confirm
the current data. The finance committee and staff depend on accurate information to send contribution
statements, robo-calls, emails and other correspondence. Thanks in advance for your help.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in
green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his
name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no
evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou
anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will
dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23 KJV
