E D I T O R ‘ S N O T E

Hey all,

Welcome to our very first issue of The Deck! 2013 has been nothing but amazing with the opening of our Bangsar flagship store, in addition to the launching of our Fall and Holiday Collections. No doubt it has been nothing but work, work, work, nevertheless the lessons we have learnt and the friends we have met throughout our journey makes what we do absolutely worthwhile.

The idea of creating The Deck was introduced earlier this year as publications have always fascinated us and this was an area we’ve wanted to dip our feet into for the longest time. After much research and reaching out to individuals that could help us accomplish this, we managed to bring on board Julian Koh, a previous Pestle & Mortar Designer to spearhead this initiative. The Deck will be issued quarterly and will be available at all your favorite hangouts.

Our aspirations for The Deck not only include pushing the overall Pestle & Mortar movement, but also to provide another platform to showcase talented homegrown and international individuals, keep our followers in the loop with happenings around our city as well as encouraging discussions about modern lifestyle. If you think you have an interesting story to tell, we would love to listen. You can get into contact with us via email - [email protected]

Last but not least, we would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who made all of this possible. We hope you guys really enjoy what you see and we look forward to begin working on our next issue. Buckle up as you can definitely expect a lot more from us in 2014 and beyond. Have an awesome Christmas, happy holidays and wishing you a Happy New Year.

“Only you can make things happen so forget about tomorrow and get shit done NOW.”

Love & Peace,The Pestle & Mortar Family

#KKSKATEFILM: FIRST FLIGHT

#KKskatefilm: First Flight started out as an idea to create a fun, conceptual skate film that spawned a collaborative project involving individuals from multiple backgrounds – retail brands, skateboarders and filmographers came together to formulate what will be a Malaysian first.

Groundhouse, the brainchild of filmographer point8cam (Nasri Lian), was borne out of this personal project of passion, bringing to the table years of experience in event and corporate filming and working with other production teams in the local industry. Assisted by a crew familiar with his style of guerilla filmography, point8cam took his ideas and vision and made it happen.

#KKskatefilm: First Flight features three skateboarders that were handpicked by point8cam himself and a seasoned film crew that took to the beautiful capital of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah with names of local clothing brands in tow. Integrating the concept of skate and travel, after week upon week of being cloisetered in the editing room, #KKskatefilm premiered in July 2013, in a ten minute feature, hosted by Pestle & Mortar Clothing at their HQ, Wanaka the Bungalow.

A name you may have already heard of but someone you know little about. Nasri Lian aka point8cam, a passionate videographer whose journey started from the early age of 14. The name ‘point8cam’ actually came from his first digital video camera, which shot at a gross 0.8 megapixels! Today point8cam is equipped with all the gear a young adventurous videographer could wish for, shooting everything from promotional films to wedding works, taking care of renowned clients such as: Nike Malaysia, Skyy Vodka, Zouk KL and many more.

Short and simple, what’s the film about?

It is a ten-minute skateboarding visual experience, which takes place in the landscapes of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Featured in the film are a few of the best local skateboarders.

What had inspired you to create the film and also what did you hope to achieve?

After years of learning and experience in film & video production, I wanted to give myself a chance to create a skateboarding film better than I once could back in the day. I also wanted to reach out to an audience outside of Malaysia not only to put my work out there, but also to create opportunities in creating relationships internationally; be it good ol’ plain friendship or business networks.

What differentiates KKSkatefilms from other skateboarding films out there?

This film features a combination of elements including: the sun, sand and skateboarding, all on the island of Borneo. In addition, the film was shot cinematically.

Were there any other parties that helped along the way?

Krookz KL, Hellbent & Midas gave their financial support by sending out their best riders to film together with us. Pestle & Mortar not only gave financial support to Groundhouse, but also hosted the screening of KKskatefilm, held at The Wanaka bungalow.

Spaceboys Studios gave us production support in terms of production equipment, along with a second camera handled by Aaron Tan. We gave rights to TapauTV to have KKskatefilm to stream from their video channel exclusively. This allowed us to reach out to an audience who love local music and enjoy somewhat of a similar alternative lifestyle. Furthermore, Ahmad Faris of TapauTV was on ground with us giving us assistance during the production.

We know you did quite a bit of skating, can you tell us a bit about that experience and your progression?

Well I’ve been skateboarding since I was 12 years old, which marks my 16th year today. As the work life rolled in heavier about 6 years ago, eventually I prioritised video making as a passion. However, skateboarding remains one of my favourite subjects to film till today. Love for both skateboarding and filmmaking is constantly helping me progress in regards to filmography and conceptual ideas.

With the current state of skating in KL, what are your thoughts?

Clearly we need more support in terms of making the sport more accessible and acceptable. People need to be educated and properly informed that skateboarding is indeed a sport for everyone, as evidently a greater sense of individuality as well as discipline is promoted. More skate spots should be made available as well in order to cultivate a larger community that would allow the skateboarding market to flourish.

A few words for the skaters out there now kicking and pushing?

Skateboarding is a fun sport and it should always remain fun. It is the lessons that are taught throughout skateboarding during the process of improving that gives us great guidance throughout life. Lessons such as persistence, dedication and strength to not stop pushing forward in something you believe in. Let skateboarding show you that!

Starting off with small conversa-tions between family members, designers, architects and vid-

eographers with big ideas gathered from different groups of people and different minds together, Ee Soon Wei did not know what was in store for him when he inherited The Royal Press from his late grandfather Ee Lay Swee.

Being the eldest, growing up in a traditionally grounded family would mean that Soon Wei would naturally be the next in line to take over the family business of printing that has been serving the vibrant community in Melaka since 1938, with clientele that has been with them for over 7 decades, doing all sorts of printings from books, pamphlets, bus tickets, product and general labelling to wedding invitation cards.

As times moved forward, The Royal Press was in danger of being obso-lete to the world, with the demand in new and profitable offset printing

technology to produce at a much faster pace. Soon Wei, being the third generation running the Art Printing Works Sdn Bhd, had to ac-comodate this change. Soon Wei had a huge task ahead of him in pre-serving not just a family legacy, but a national heritage. This ultimately fuelled his passion to sustain and revive the family business, diving into a personal journey of his family history.

With his assembled team, he rejuve-nated and created The Royal Press as a living and working Printing Press Company and a museum space to showcase the social history and her-itage of Malaysia through the eyes of the antique printing press for our generation.

_ 14 _

Page 17: The Deck Issue 01

T A L E N T F E A T U R E

One of the very first steps of reviving The Royal Press began with a three year long research in documenting social history from the people in the community, documents of The Royal Press, the various works done, as well as the various machinery and tools used to operate the Royal Press for the many years. From here, various challenges came in with the clearing out of the unnecessary contents of the company, leaving behind the important social documents and machinery from the 18th Century that has been restored by heritage contractors and technicians back to spanking new, their colours repainted according to the styles of the 18th Century.

_ 15 _

Page 18: The Deck Issue 01

T A L E N T F E A T U R E

The Gutenburg museum, the founding museum of movable types was also involved with Soon Wei’s research, after going through libraries of traditional movable type settings and machinery of a combination of English, Chinese, Jawi and Tamil characters, making The Royal Press the first polyglot printing press in the world serving the multilingual Malaysian community till today. While in Europe, Greek and Latin were languages used in the past and now as a basis of translation.

Through these efforts, Soon Wei helped and redefined a new era to his family business “The Royal Press”, and through documentation of social history to stretch the idea further and continue not just his family legacy story, but also a national heritage to further sustain the business which continues to print calendars, bottle labels, notebooks and other merchandise, to be relevant to the ever-changing times, to neighbours, friends, other retailers, new audiences: tourism, institutions, designers, architects,

and writers who are interested in this craft, showing a blend of art, print and graphics, preserving the story and heritage for the family, younger generations to appreciate. A documentary by The Discovery Channel on The Royal Press, also further bolstered it’s exposure in South East Asia, as well as guided tours by The Royal Press curators and researchers would educate and teach generations.

With this, Soon Wei’s work does not stop there. The Art Printing Works Sdn Bhd has been in Bangsar serving the community in printing since the 1950s and he foresees an opportunity for something greater. With a land space of up to 70,000 square feet, plans are already well underway to create a unique content platform for people in Kuala Lumpur, building an urban community for a unique living hub to engage today’s generation. Keep your ears peeled! It’s another exciting prospect for us to look out for in 2014.

They say there’s no bond more absolute than the bond of family. Under this roof, we are

all ultimately siblings that share a view and perception of the world that is specific to our lifestyle and culture while working together to perfect our own respective arts. And for the very first issue of The Deck, we are proud to feature the nocturnal siblings of the family, known in the nightlife circuit as BATE.

A tag team DJ duo, consisting of Ethan Curzon and Yeoh Wai Hong, both go way back to high school, where their passion and love for Electronic Dance Music (EDM) kicked in, and decided to take DJing up professionally in 2011. They are not ones who are genre specific but open minded on their interest of music stretching into various genres, with Progressive, Electro & Big Room being their specialty, and since then they have been playing more gigs and music production as well.

Bursting into the nightlife scene as BATE and garnering quite a following, the duo made their rise to the scene as winners of JUICE magazine’s Best New DJs of 2012, the “then” new kids on the block. Since then, their growth has been meteoric as they push the scene up another notch on overdrive with blood pumping tracks that make you lift your feet off the ground as soon as the beat drops, to bring-the-house down with EDM anthems, dictating every ebb and flow to every night.

In 2012 alone, they have graced the dance floors spinning alongside Hard Rock Sofa, Swanky Tunes, Showtek and Cosmic Gate. Notably, being a featured act at H-Artistry 2012 alongside Eva Simons and Angger Dimas. This year, they have escalated to even higher grounds by playing at Tiësto Club Life, Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA), Wicked Festival, A State of Trance 600 in 2013 and in 2014, they have just been booked for FMFA 2014.

On regular weekends, they can be found as the resident DJs of SMASH at ZOUK on Friday nights and NOISE! at LUST on Saturdays, being the hottest attraction of parties in KL, with bringing swarming crowds of people to a smashing party to end the week. Their domino effect does not stop at the shores of Malaysia, BATE have expanded their reach internationally, representing Malaysia at some of

the biggest and freshest clubs in the world, Octagon in Seoul, MAZE, LOTUS & FEVER in Melbourne, and Mink in Singapore.

Pestle & Mortar is proud to call BATE outfits Ethan Curzon and Yeoh Wai Hong family, having seen them from the early days of porch drinking, newbies to the scene to being one of the most sought after architects to set a party blazing.

For the past two years, Pestle & Mortar have been positioning themselves within the art and culture movement amongst young KL-ites. Introducing the latest showroom located in Bangsar, an affluent residential suburb

of Kuala Lumpur. With plenty of trendy boutiques and cafés emerging, along with the progressive momentum Pestle & Mortar has attained, it was only natural for them to craft this very unique shopping experience for their family, friends and followers.

Incorporated into the showroom are distinctive elements that reflect their presence within Malaysian street culture. Bangsar has a raw appearance and the fixtures were created while keeping flexibility in mind. The space unites three areas: The Forefront, Mid-Level and the Catwalk.

The Forefront comprises a modular racking system that is interchangeable to create the best atmosphere to tell the story of their latest collections. The Mid-Level is a step up deck, which surrounds the natural concrete counter. In addition, a full glass display holds highlighted items and pick ups that have been collected from all around the world. Such items include Bellroy wallets, Daniel Wellington and Aark Collective timepieces and many more. Last but not least is the Catwalk. The idea of this space is to promote discussion about fashion, story-telling with the new collections and to stimulate and to create a comfortable and peaceful shopping experience.

Situated on Jalan Telawi 5, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan, Malaysia. Open 7 days. 12pm til 9pm.
