After all the excitement of the 2016 election, the 2017 election was pretty dull. Russian hacking, twitter
bots, and illegal ballots — even millions of them — can’t make a difference if there is only one candidate
for each office, right?
Jessica Davis was elected Secretary and will serve a two-year term. Yu Kay Law was elected Alternate
Councilor, and will serve the remaining two years of a three-year term. Erick Vasquez was elected Chair-
Elect, and will succeed to Chair in 2019, and then to Immediate Past Chair in 2020.
Photos of our newly-elected officers, returning officers, and outgoing officers appear below. The Section
offers its congratulations to Jessica, Yu Kay, and Erick, and sincerely thanks Freddie Jordan, Kerra Fletch-
er, and Rachel Jakubiak for their service.

The Annual Poster Session is a tradition of long standing in the Dayton Section. The Dayton Section
invites you, your colleagues, and students to present a poster relating to any area of chemical re-
search. Outstanding undergraduate and graduate poster presentations will be awarded with prizes of
$100. Join us and volunteer as a poster judge by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. Compli-
mentary food and soft drinks will be provided by the Section. In addition to poster awards, we will also
recognize the outstanding junior chemistry major at each college and university within the Section’s
boundaries with the Patterson College Chemistry Award.
Call for Poster Abstracts Send abstracts of 250 words or fewer by Sunday, April 1, 2018 using the Google form on Day-
tonACS.org (http://daytonacs.org/PosterSession/index.html). Alternatively, send your abstract
to Dr. Anastasie Weaver at [email protected] . For students, please indicate on the ab-
stract if you would like to be considered for an award and whether you are an undergraduate
or graduate student. An ACS abstract template (DaytonACS.org/abstract/Abstract Tem-
plate.doc) is available for abstracts sent via email. Poster boards measure 3’ high by 4’ wide.

National Chemistry Week and the Dayton Regional Science Festival We celebrated National Chemistry Week with two events in 2017. The first event took place at the
Boonshoft Museum of Discovery on October 21st and 22nd, and the second event was held on
October 29th at the Centerville Library. Although it is not a National Chemistry Week event, the
section also participated in the Dayton Regional Science Festival on November 17th and 18th. All
three events highlighted this year’s theme — Chemistry Rocks! Experiments utilizing rocks and
minerals included identifying rock types by streak and hardness tests, copper plating onto zinc
metal, and making a volcano. Throughout both NCW events, we experimented with around 500 local
children. Although there is no formal count on how many people visited our table at the Science
Festival, almost 2500 people attended the event. Thanks to all who volunteered!
2018 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad and Patterson High School Awards
The date, time, and venue for the Chemistry Olympiad section exam were not determined at press time. In
previous years, it was scheduled at Centerville High School on a Friday afternoon in early March. The ex-
am takes a little more than an hour.
The Dayton Section uses the Olympiad exam for the first part of its Patterson High School Chemistry
Awards, given annually. In addition, the top ten scorers (although no more than two from one high school)
will be invited to take the laboratory portion of the local Olympiad exam.
Students competing in the USNCO are eligible for selection as members of the United States team for the
International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). This year, the competition will be held July 19-29, 2018 at the
50th International Chemistry Olympiad in Bratislava, Slovakia and Prague, Czech Republic .
Joy Haley can’t hide her disappointment that
rock candy was left out of the demonstrations. Wayne shows Olivia how to
make counterfeit pennies!
Volunteers and participants observe the ex-
tent of reaction between acetic acid and sev-
eral rock types.
Seeing how the banner attracts the ladies,
it’s a wonder that no one has thought to
make banner-look sportswear.

HYDRATES VALINE SODIUM The Higgs Boson is awakened by his
wife early Sunday morning. “I want us to
go to church today,” she says. “Aw,
honey,” the Higgs Boson replies, “I was
looking forward to eating some pan-
cakes, reading the paper, and then tak-
ing a nap before the football game
starts.” “We have to set a good example
for the children!” she yells. “You’re the
one who wanted kids, not me!” answers
the Higgs Boson. Later, at church, the
priest says, “I’m sorry, but we don’t allow
Higgs Bosons in here.” Startled, the
Higgs Boson asks, “But without me, how
can YOU HAVE MASS?”

In the new hit reality show – Marry the Plumber! – a contestant questions two
potential life partners and discerns which one is the plumber. The plumber is
the better choice because, of course, plumbers make way more money than
chemists, and are never unemployed. Also, if you marry the chemist and, in the
dead of winter your pipes burst, who you gonna call? In the first episode, the
contestant steps up to the microphone and asks, “How would you pronounce
this word?”, and then spells out:
