THE CHURCH TOWER The Second Presbyterian Church of Baltimore
Connecting Christ & Community Newsletter of the Second Presbyterian Church of Baltimore · Volume 60 · Number 5 · June 2013
W ithout any concrete data to support it, my
hunch is that the frequency of preaching on
the Ten Commandments is in inverse proportion to
the degree of cultural interest in them.
That is, the Commandments are sometimes used to
stake claims of political and cultural landscapes, but
when that is so, they are less often the focal point of
concerted sermon proclamation or widely visible in
church liturgy.
Plenty of good questions can be asked about the use
of the Ten Commandments: how well do we know
them, how much do we pay attention to them, how is
it that we understand them and seek to use
them as guides in our lives.
Are the Ten Commandments just a set of
rules or are they a way of life? How does
each one call us to reflect on our life and
values? What does it mean to love God and
our neighbor in a world where violence,
greed, and fear threaten our lives, our
values, our hearts?
The Benedictine nun, author and speaker
Joan Chittister answers these and other
questions in our Summer Sermon Series
book for 2013: “The Ten Commandments: Laws of
the Heart.”
Each chapter of this very readable and engaging book
focuses on what one of the commandments means for
us today. The final two chapters shed light on the two
Great Commandments, "Love God with all your
heart, and your neighbor as yourself.”
Some words from the Introduction help set the tone:
"The Ten Commandments are laws of the heart, not
laws of the commonwealth. They are laws that last,
that lead us to fullness of life–beyond the culture,

SESSION HIGHLIGHTS Stated Session Meeting –April 16, 2013
Moderator Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Blair opened the Stated Session meeting
at which all elders were present. Elder Barb Newbauer led the opening
worship that was based on the second chapter of Spiritual Leadership for
Church Officers. Ms. Newbauer opened with a prayer. Chapter 2 cites a few
interesting passages for those who are serving as church leaders:
I have been granted the leadership that Jesus Christ provided, whether
we want it or not.
We can do as much or as little with it as we want.
Let’s hope that love is involved.
Several elders agreed that we, as elders, have authority, but Jesus is the
ultimate leader. Elders collectively agreed that good leaders uphold the
following qualities:
Listener
Patience
Know oneself (like Jesus did)
Selflessness
Ability to Listen
Session approved that $500 of the youth scholarship fund be shared
evenly between youth participants Andrea Hughes and Anna Hughes, who
are not related to each other, each receiving $250. Sarah.Slingluff asked the
Session for additional nominations, specifying that high school seniors are
eligible. There were none.
Ms. Slingluff mentioned that the March game night to which parents of
youth were also invited to share their thoughts and expectations of the Youth
Council was very productive. Activities are being planned for 2014. Youth
group attendance for those in grades 5 though7 is being sought. Questions
such as how frequently youth want to meet for activities were discussed.
Sunday school attendance among youth is quite good. An end-of-the-year
party for youth will be taking place in May on a date to be later determined
and the summer mission trip to Mount Hope, West Virginia to help build
and repair homes will be taking place July 14-20, 2013.
Session also approved that $13,000 of the $30,000 remaining in the
Capital Campaign for special mission projects be allocated to the fourth
Impact Outreach project to fund public schools and uniforms for students in
Haiti (public schooling in Haiti is not free) and $17,000 to CASA (Court
Appointed Special Advocates) of Baltimore County.
Rev. Blair and the Elders closed with individual prayers of thanks and
intercession by those present and with the Lord’s Prayer.
On May 5, a Special Session Meeting of the Session was convened in the
Manse. It was called to order by Rev. Dr. Thomas Blair to receive new
members into the congregation. The new members were welcomed and
introduced to the congregation at the 11:00 AM worship service.
The new members are Steve Skeen and Lauren Walker, who will soon be
getting married at Second Presbyterian. The Elders welcomed the new
members.

Contemplating the Lord’s Prayer: A Brief Sermon Series
O ver three Sundays in late May and early June, we will have sermons
on the prayer Jesus taught us to pray…
Here is a brief, helpful guide to the Lord’s Prayer. This may be helpful
for you to take a little time to read through, contemplate and consider
these questions—and your answers as an exercise of awareness of living
in God’s love.
• Our Father who art in heaven. . . When was I aware of being Your
beloved son or daughter today? Of being brother or sister to Your
children?
• Hallowed be your name . . . What choices did I make today that
gave praise to Your holy name?
• Your kingdom come. . . Where were You, Risen Lord, present and
active in me and in others today?
• Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. . . Was I was moved
to act by You and your Holy Spirit or by the Evil One?
• Give us this day our daily bread . . . Thank you for my life, my
person and for this day, for the people and events that made it the day
it was.
• And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. . . If I feel a
lack of Your peace, I am sorry and ask your forgiveness for the past
and new faith in You and in Your values.
• And lead us from temptation. . .What do I need to give up or stay
away from in order to come closer to You?
• But deliver us from evil. . . Gift me with the favor of Your presence
and support, Your guidance and protection in the events and meeting
with people I anticipate tomorrow.
The Rev. William W. Nickels, Baltimore
Presbytery's Associate General Presbyter, will be
our guest minister on June 30. Bill, a native
Virginian, graduated from Franklin and Marshall
College and Yale Divinity School. He was
ordained in 1980, and he has served six
congregations – four as an Intentional Interim
Pastor. In his current role, Bill is responsible for
helping the Presbytery develop thriving,
reconciling congregations. He also works with
churches that are moving through pastoral
transitions. Bill is married to Ann, a
communications professional with MedStar, and
they are parents of two grown sons.

above the culture, and more enduring than the culture.
All the Sinai Tablets on the walls of all the
courtrooms in the land will not assure us of justice if
we do not have hearts already shaped by what the
sculptures signify. All the prayers and prayer
meetings in the world which we hold in public
schools in a pluralistic society will not make us
people of the Law unless the law first lives in our
hearts. And if it does, displays will not much matter.
We ourselves will be their sign." – [A noted and very
popular author and lecturer, Sister Joan D. Chittister,

Pennsylvania, where she served as prioress for 12
years.]

“Live, Act, Grow: Words to Live By”: A few words from our Associate Pastor, Rev. Jenn
DiFrancesco, about our summer worship series
C an you rattle them off? Most can't name all ten of the Ten
Commandments. And most think of these "10 words" as a list of "don'ts".
What would happen if we studied them not as a list of prohibitions, but as words that
encourage us to live, act, and grow in our faith? This summer, we invite you to join
us each Sunday for a new and fresh look at each one of the commandments.
As Tom indicated in his lead article, the summer worship team and summer preachers
are using "The Ten Commandments: Laws of the Heart" by Joan Chittister as their
reference point for the weekly worship.

THE CHURCH TOWER · A NEWSLETTER OF THE SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF BALTIMORE
The Anawim* Imperative From Thom Kuhl for the Sunday morning Adult Seminar group, May 2013.
Often, in busy, harried lives, we are unable to stop. . . anything.
Stop worrying, stop hurrying, stop crying, stop hurting,
But the thing we most need, sometimes is to stop, and think. . .
and question, WHY?
Not for the momentary satisfaction of an answer,
the perfunctory explanation, a shallow selfish reason.
Rather, we are drawn to the why of others.
Why the pain of others which strangles the beauty of the sunrise
and dilutes the colors of the day’s anticipation;
Why the ache of loneliness that imprisons one in solitude,
unwanted, unappreciated, unimaginable, unforgiveable;
why the sorrow of loss,
so deep, so intense, so great, so grievous, so grotesque
in its constant clawing at the soul, or spirit, or psyche,
or whatever it is that is being shredded apart.
The why of others begs remedy, requires attention,
demands response, not out of a wish for accomplishment
or healing or recognition, but a need for completion.
Wholeness, what makes us total, makes us one.
And so we reach out.
We must touch with the Master’s hand.
We must see with the Master’s eyes.
Speak with the Master’s voice.
We must answer the call to bring His love to all.
*Fr. Raymond Brown provides a useful explanation of the term Anawim: "The word Anawim represents a
plural from the Hebrew anaw which, along with its cognate ani is a word for 'poor, humble, afflicted.'
"Although this title ["Anawim"] meaning the 'Poor Ones' may have originally designated the physically poor
(and frequently still included them), it came to refer more widely to those who could not trust in their own
strength but had to rely in utter confidence upon God: the lowly, the poor, the sick, the downtrodden, the
widows and the orphans. The opposite of the Anawim were not simply the rich, but the proud and self-
sufficient who showed no need of God or His help.

Tuesdays at Ten What do you do when feelings of unhappiness overwhelm you?
The most common response is to search for something better. In
June, as we continue the video Bible study, “Chronicles of
Promise – The Legacies of Israel’s Three Kings,” we will
examine the ancient Israelites’ struggle with discontentment—
their request to God for a king. Please join us as we journey to
explore the lands where kings Saul, David, and Solomon once
ruled and gain insights into the leadership they provided and the
legacies they left behind. You will enjoy viewing vivid videos,
participating in deliberating discussions, and becoming a part of
the cordial Christian fellowship always present whenever we
meet. All sessions are held on Tuesdays, begin at 10 a.m. and
last for about one and one-half hours at the church in Meeting
Room E. (Please use the glass door entrance by the Chapel on
Stratford Rd.) For more information, please contact Gene Haupt,

Tapas, Talk & Theology Fridays, June 7 & June 21, 7 p.m.
The Tapas, Talk and Theology study group continues its study of
The Screwtape Letters, a novel written by C. S. Lewis, in which the
main “characters/demons” live in a peculiarly morally reversed
world, where individual benefit and greed are seen as the greatest
good, and neither demon is capable of comprehending God's love
for man or acknowledging true human virtue when he sees it. This
book provides a series of lessons in the importance of taking a
deliberate role in living out Christian faith by portraying a typical
human life, with all its temptations and failings, as seen from devils'
viewpoints.
The study begins with a light supper followed by discussion. The
June 7th meeting will be at the home of Carol Clark, 113 Croydon
Road in Homeland, and the final meeting for the summer on June 21
will take place at the home of Nancy and Bob Flower, 11 Dellwood
Street in Hunt Valley. Anyone interested in this study course is
encouraged to attend and can contact Becky Ferrell at

Medicare: Questions, Discussions & Insights
John Basmajian, who has spent years studying and dealing with
Medicare as an insurance agent as well as a “client” himself, will
lead us in an informal conversation about Medicare-what it will and
won’t do and what we might expect of it in the coming years. No
one has all the answers, but John has an engaging and reassuring
way of sharing his insights and experience. His specialty has been in
helping people find supplemental Medicare plans, so we might get
some insights here on how to choose a plan. No selling will take
place-just informed conversation.
Please join us at noon on Wednesday June 12 in Smith Hall.
Bring a sandwich for our fellowship luncheon; dessert and
beverages will be supplied. Our program will follow lunch.

Good News Column
Taking a cue from the NBC Nightly News segment “Making a Difference,” the
Congregational Life Council endeavors to highlight the “Good News” within our
congregation.
Bright Spots We have many congratulations to share this spring:
Congratulations are in order for Gail and Bernie Levy on the marriage of their
daughter. Reverend Jenn married Alice Levy and Todd Burns on April 13,
2013. They were joined by their parents, Gail and Bernie, and Debbie and Mike
Burns, as well as families and friends. Both Todd and Alice were baptized in the
Presbyterian Church and loved working with Reverend Jenn to put together the
ceremony. They are now residing in Alexandria Virginia, where both work as
consultants for the federal government.
Also congratulations to Cindy and Len Levering on the marriage of their
daughter. Sara Levering and Vicente Roa were married on May 4, 2013 at the
Oaks Waterfront Inn in St. Michael's, MD by the Rev. Dr. Tom Blair. Several of
Vicente's cousins from Spain were even able to make the trip to join in the
celebration! Sara works in public relations and Vicente works for a construction
company. They met in Bethesda 4 1/2 years ago and are living in Potomac, MD.
And congratulations to Chuck Harlan who was recently inducted into the Friends
School of Baltimore’s Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements on the lacrosse
field. The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding individual athletes, teams and
coaches who have exemplified the School’s tradition of extraordinary
sportsmanship and meritorious service to the athletic program. Chuck is a 1963
graduate of Friends School.
Finally, we celebrate with Rev. Jenn DiFrancesco, husband JT Paulk and
daughters Maggie and Ellie on the baptism of their son and brother, Andrew
Joseph Paulk, on May 19, 2013. Joyce Zimmerman and Leslie Owsley presented
baby Andrew, or “Little Dude” as he is familiarly called by his family, for baptism.
The emotion was palpable on the faces of both parents as Rev. Jenn solemnly asked
Maggie and Ellie if they would share the love of Jesus with their brother, and then
proceeded to baptize him.
Making a Difference If you have been enjoying coffee in the Westcott Room of late, special thanks go to
Alix Rodman and Deborah Slingluff for researching and donating our two new
coffee urns. Lately, the congregation has been consuming up to 100 cups of coffee.
