Hidden FiguresTHEODORE MELFI May 31 & June 1Allison Schroeder, Theodore Melfi Based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s book
Taraji P. Henson,Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe,Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst,Glen Powell, Jim Parsons,Mahershala Ali
“A crucial episode of the 1960s, centeredon both the space race and the civil-rightsstruggle, comes to light in Hidden Figures,an energetic and impassioned drama. It’sthe true story of three black women fromVirginia who, soon after Sputnik shocked
the world, are hired byNASA, where they doindispensable work in asegregated workplace.
“Mary Jackson(Janelle Monáe),endowed withengineering talent, hasbeen kept out of theprofession by racialbarriers; DorothyVaughan (Octavia
Spencer) heads the office of ‘computers’ orgifted mathematicians, but can’t bepromoted, owing to her race; and the mostgifted of calculators, Katherine Johnson(Taraji P. Henson), is recruited for the mainNASA rocket-science centre, where, as theonly black employee, she endures relentlessinsults and indignities.
“Director Theodore Melfi evokes thewomen’s professional conflicts while fillingin the vitality of their private lives. The filmalso highlights, in illuminating detail, thebaked-in assumptions of everyday racismwhich, regardless of changes in law, ringinfuriatingly true today. With Kevin Costner,as Katherine’s principled boss; MahershalaAli, as her suitor; and Glen Powell, as JohnGlenn, a hero in space and on the ground.”

Hobnails AndHemp Rope May 25GREG GRANSDEN
Documentary“The Royal Canadian Geographical
Society (RCGS) is pleased to present theOttawa premiere of Hobnails And HempRope, a 25-minute documentary about theBugaboo Spire Centennial Climb Project. This Can Geo Talks film event recounts theadventures of four Ontario climbers as theycommemorate the 100th anniversary of thefirst known ascent of BC’s PurcellMountains’ Bugaboo Spire, in July 2016.
“Greg Gransden, director of Hobnails AndHemp Rope and Bryan Thompson, expedition leader, will be on hand to answeraudience questions after the screening. Astunning collection of Ivan Petrov’sexpedition photography will be on display, along with vintage mountaineering gear andresearch materials used on the project.
“Hobnails And Hemp Rope payshomage to the Austrian-Canadian explorerand the Alpine Club of Canada's firstprofessional mountain guide, Conrad Kain, whose team successfully reached theSpire’s summit in 1916, considered
Canada’s golden age of mountaineering. Tocelebrate the Kain expedition, the modern-day climbers used similar gear, food andclimbing equipment to that which wouldhave been used to camp and climb the spire100 years before. The only exception is thevery upper section of the climb, deemed notsafe enough to face today with historic gear.
“Scaling this coveted mountain is noeasy climb. The granite spire rises up to anelevation of 3,204 meters and rests betweenthe Vowell and Crescent Glaciers. Kain'sroute on Bugaboo Spire remained thenation’s most difficult alpine climb up untilthe middle of the 20th century. The Ottawascreening is part of a cross-Canada tour tocelebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary.”

II Am Not Your Negro May 22 to 24RAOUL PECK
James Baldwin, Raoul Peck
Documentary narrated bySamuel L. Jackson
“‘The history of America is the history ofthe Negro in America. And it’s not a prettypicture.’ These words were written byJames Baldwin, the African-Americannovelist, essayist, playwright, poet, andfierce social critic. When Baldwin died in1987, he had finished only 30 pages of hismagnum opus on the lives and murders ofthree of his closest friends: Medgar Evers,Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.Althought the book never happened, themovie I Am Not Your Negro, directed byRaoul Peck, is alive and kicking ass.Nominated for an Academy Award for BestDocumentary Feature, this chronicle of along, hard, and ongoing struggle isunmissable and unforgettable.
“In archival footage, we see Baldwin, breathing eloquent fire. In his patenteduniform of dark suit, white shirt and skinnytie, his hooded eyes flashing, he speakstruth to pissed-off power. Elsewhere,Samuel L. Jackson narrates the story in theauthor’s own words with supreme style andfluency, reducing his booming tones tosuggest Baldwin’s hushed fervour. I Am NotYour Negro contrasts the horrific past withan ever-scarier present and illustrates howBaldwin’s words echo with equal urgency

Stefan Zweig:Farewell To Europe(Vor der Morgenröte)MARIA SCHRADER
Maria Schrader, Jan Schomburg
Josef Hader, Barbara Sukowa,Aenne Schwarz“This impressively handled if rather atypical biopic,
Austria’s submission for the Best Foreign LanguageOscar, is psychologically insightful and packs aserious emotional wallop.“Jewish Austrian author and playwright Stefan
Zweig was, alongside Thomas Mann, the most-readGerman-language author of the 1920s. Exiled fromhis homeland in 1934, yet unwilling to condemn thepolitical forces that turfed him out of tumultuous pre-War Europe, Zweig and his dedicated wife Lottericocheted from the U.K. and around the Americas, but were never at ease away from Austria.“Director Maria Schrader doesn’t try to dramatize
Zweig at work writing. Instead, she focuses on theauthor’s interactions with others – some purelyceremonial, others more intimate, all of themrevealing – to help suggest something about both hischaracter and his slowly decaying sense of place inthe world. In exile, his body might be safe but hismind keeps wandering back to a place he knows isbeing erased from the map.”
– The Hollywood Reporter(106 min. Austria 2016. In German with somePortuguese, Spanish & French with English subtitles.Rated 14A. Cinemascope.)

Lou Andreas-SaloméCORDULA KABLITZ-POST
Susanne Hertel, Cordula Kablitz-Post
Katharina Lorenz, Nicole Heesters,Alexander Scheer, Julius Feldmeier,Harold Schrott“We meet Lou Andreas-Salomé at 72 years of age,
as she recounts her life story to a young admirer.Born in St. Petersburg in 1861, she fell in love withphilosophy as a girl and determined to live a life ofthe mind, escaping bourgeois constriction by nevermarrying or having children.“With terrific attention to period detail, the film
recounts her close ties to many of the more famouspeople of her era (perhaps more famous becausethey were men), including author Paul Rée, fellowphilosopher Friedrich Neitzsche and poet RainerMaria Rilke, who became her lover despite their agegap (she was 15 years his senior). She became closeto Sigmund Freud in a relationship that caused muchgossip, but without doubt contributed to herbecoming an accomplished psychoanalyst.“Never dry, this biography of Andreas-Salomé
shows the focus and intellect that led to her prolificoutput as a novelist, essayist and intellectual.”

Someone Like Me(Eine wen iig)XAVIER KOLLER Xavier Koller
Nils Althaus, Carla Juri,Hanspeter Müller-Drossaart“Directed by Xavier Koller (Journey Of Hope,
1990’s Best Foreign Language Film), Someone LikeMe is an irrepressibly cheerful love story set in Bernin the late 1800s. A popular barber shop is home toDällebach Kari, an amiable and entertaining fellowwith a great story to tell.“Born into a poor farming family, Kari was a fragile
child, born with the additional burden of a harelip. But Kari‘s mother doted on him, and he blossomedinto a cheerful young man with an unshakeable beliefin the beauty of life.“At 20, Kari (played as a young man by Nils
Althaus) meets the gentle and beautiful Annemarie(Karla Juri). It’s love at first sight. While other girlshad turned away from Kari, Annemarie is enrapturedby his outgoing personality. But her pompous fatheris opposed to his daughter’s relationship with a merebarber, and has other plans for her marriage. Thus, the power of true love is pitted against the pressuresof a conservative society.“Flash forward to the grown Kari (Hanspeter
Müller-Drossaart) as he regales his barbershopclients with the tale of his one great love, andcheerfully lets us know how it all turned out.”

KKedi May 18 to 20CEYDA TORUN
Documentary Feature“Impossible to resist (and 100 percent
allergy-free for us afflicted souls), Kedi isalmost shamelessly satisfying: adocumentary about the thousands ofscrappy wild cats that prowl Istanbul withinsouciance. Whose streets? Their streets.
“The ancient city has, for centuries, dealtwith what might be termed a cat problem.
Still, Ceyda Torun’swarm-heartedexposé definitelysees the army offelines as an asset.Sometimescaptured in high-angle drone shotsand sometimes viaa slinky rovingcamera, we’redown on theground with theseanimals, whose
day-to-day impulsiveness finds a sinuousexpression in some of the most elegantcamerawork to ever grace a nature doc.
“We follow seven especially brazensubjects, and it’s easy to get swept up intheir individual dramas. There’s the little guywho paws every afternoon at the window ofa café like he’s auditioning for a newproduction of Oliver! We also meet amorousalley strutters, psychotic yowlers and regallypampered pusses that know they have usgamed.
“Glowing, Kedi finds depth via its manyinterviews with humans, some of whom seethe cats as wise spirits, others who needthem as objects for their compassion. Thesebeasts awaken something within the people, making them kinder and more playful. IfKedi did the same for audiences, thatwouldn’t be so bad.”

LLa La Land May 23 and 25& DAMIEN CHAZELLE
Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling,John Legend, J.K. Simmons,Rosemarie DeWitt
“Pure unadulterated joy is in short supplythese days, both on the big screen and off.Which makes Damien Chazelle’s irresistibleLa La Land all the more cherishable. Morethan just a throwback to MGM musicals, itis a funny Valentine to the entire history ofthe genre, buoyed by a clutch of great newsongs and carried by the chemistry ofEmma Stone and Ryan Gosling.
The story – aspiring actress Mia (Stone)meets jazz pianist Seb (Gosling), and sparksfly until career aspirations get in the way –is simplicity itself. Stone and Gosling havechemistry and charisma to spare. It would
be easy to diminish Mia as a bright-as-a-button type, but Stone spools through manycolours, from luminous to spirited todistraught.
If Stone is the film’s heart, Gosling is thesoul, caught between art and commerce, asmoody as the genre will allow. The pair arenot the world’s greatest dancers but they arehaving so much fun doing it, you will too.
Audacious, retro, funny and heartfelt, LaLa Land is the latest great musical forpeople who don’t like musicals – and willslap a mile-wide smile across the mostmiserable of faces.”

Land Of Mine May 3 & 4(Under Sandet)MARTIN ZANDVLIET
Martin Zandvliet
Roland Møller,Louis Hofmann, Joel Basman,Mikkel Boe Følsgaard,Oskar Bökelmann, Mads Riisom,Laura Bro
“The Danish movie Land of Mine, whichrecently competed for the Best ForeignLanguage Film Oscar, is the kind of film thatbecomes an instant classic: in this case, aWorld War II drama that manages to evokethe scope and solemn emotion of the bestof that genre while relating an untold storywith bold vision and assurance.
“The action takes place at the end of thewar, when German prisoners – most ofthem teenagers conscripted in desperationby Adolf Hitler – were sent to the Danishcoast to perform the frequently deadly taskof clearing more than two million landminesthat had been planted there.
“The ethical dilemma of sending boys todo men’s work, to rectify a debt they
incurred mostly as cannon fodder, ispersonified by the Danish military man whotrains and oversees them, a hard-bittensergeant named Rasmussen (RolandMoller). As Land Of Mine opens, the POWsare subjected to verbal and physical abuseby Danish civilians finally venting theirhatred for their longtime enemies.Rasmussen shares their contempt, but asthe movie proceeds, he begins to see thefutility and cruelty of an endeavour thatassumes the contours of revenge at its mostbrutal, rather than rough justice.
“Both grimly naturalistic and infused withclassical values at their most thoughtfullycomposed, Land Of Mine is epic but deeplyintimate; elegant but tough. Just whenviewers might think they don’t make warpictures the way they used to, Zandvliet hascome along and done it — even as hepushes the form forward with intellectualrigor, unerring clarity and stylistic panache.”
– Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post2016 Academy Award nomineefor Best Foreign Language Film(100 min., Denmark/Germany 2015. InDanish and German with English subtitles.Rated 14A; Gory Scenes, DisturbingContent, Graphic Violence. Cinemascope.)

he ‘I’ in the ghostlydocumentaryI Called Him Morganis Helen Morgan, the‘him’ Lee Morgan,
the transcendental bop trumpeterwhom Helen (his wife) shot in thechest on a snowy night in 1972,some years after she’d pulled himout of the gutter and helped himkick the heroin habit that hadended his career.
“The movie’s Swedish-borndirector, Kasper Collin, makesmagic with ingredients that aremagical to start with: a handful ofcontemporary interviews; black-and-white candids of Morgan andsuch friends and colleagues asWayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin,Billy Harper, and Charli Persip; andan audiotape of Helen, soundingold but firm a scant month beforeher death in 1996. Oh, yes, there’s music, lots ofit. If you don’t know Lee Morgan, it will be loveat first listen.
“The events recounted in I Called HimMorgan are elemental, in the world of 20th-
century bebop perhaps evenarchetypal: Morgan’s auspiciousdebut with Art Blakey; hisgrowing fame; the drugs that led
to a burn scar on his scalp from when heOD’ed and fell against a radiator; his rehab and
new life and thenevident feeling ofentrapment; and hisinfatuation with ayounger woman whonow insists to Collinthat Morgan’s‘sexuality was very, very limited.’ Notmuch of the above isfilled in, but it hardlyneeds to be. The
movie is like a record you could spin again andagain. The musicians must be the mostphotogenic men alive – almost every shot evokesa freedom of spirit, a simultaneous relaxationand alertness. Collin supplies a visual motif asconnective tissue: ash, smoke, snowflakes, rain, all of them swirling against winter skies or clubslike Slugs or theapartmentbuilding on theBronx’s GrandConcourse whereMorgan got hischops back. Themovie has theperfectsoundtrack forswirling. It’smesmerizing, toovivid to beevanescent, tooprecious to hold.”

Take debit – it’s 2017.
Our decision not to accept credit or debit cards isn’tbased on some backward-thinking Ludditephiliospophy. It’s based on convenience, or rather onbalancing certain conveniences with otherinconveniences.Yes, we know that it’s inconvenient for you when
you show up, bereft of cash, with so little time beforethe movie starts that a trip to the ATM seems likepunishment. But, as we’ve said before, each andevery electronic transaction takes longer than goodold cash, so accepting cards would mean that wewould be inconveniencing everyone in the queuebehind the plastic-waving patrons. It’s just adifference of 10 or 15 or 20 seconds, but thetransactions add up. No offence, but we’d ratherinconvenience the occasional cash-free patron thanthe dozens of others who have both paper and plasticin their wallets.
You kill the house lights abruptlywhen the main feature begins. Whynot bring them down gradually, withmore elegance and regard forpatrons’ retinas?
We were early adopters of energy-efficient lightingand, sometime back in the 1990s, replaced the 1947fixtures on the auditorium walls with compactfluorescent lighting (CFLs). At the time, the fixturesand bulbs we were able to install did not work withdimmer switches, so those lights are either on, or off.
We’ll change the fixtures again, someday, and whenwe do we’ll keep your retinas in mind.
For special events such as operas,Royal Shakespeare Company, etc, isit necessary to buy tickets previously,or is 30 mins pre-show sufficienttime?
Good question – when we ran the Royal OperaHouse shows a couple of years ago, we did offeradvance tickets. At first, they sold pretty well. Butaudiences quickly learned that there is plenty of roomat the ByTowne (650 seats) and that advance ticketswere not necessary. Advance sales dropped off, eventhough total attendance was increasing. When we
resumed the ROH shows this January (and added theRoyal Ballet and Royal Shakespeare Companyproductions), we decided not to offer advance sales.Getting to the cinema with 15 to 20 minutes to
spare before the posted show time is all you reallyneed to do to make sure you get in. This applies tovirtually every screening at the ByTowne. We sell outfrom time to time, but even when that happens, theonly people to get turned away are the ones whoarrive with less than 5 minutes to go before the showstarts.
How about a guest Wi-Fi network?
Not too surprisingly, we actually don’t want you tobe surfing the internet or checking your texts in the
cinema, so we’re not keen on enabling that. For the 10or 15 minutes before the movie starts, werecommend conversation.
It would be really nice if the durationof each film could be indicated inyour program.
The duration of a movie, or the running time, hasalways been a part of our programme guide andwebsite. We’ve been at this job for so long, though, that sometimes we forget to indicate to our readershow things are formatted. So here’s a refresher. There are two places in the printed ByTowne Guide
where you might find the running time, depending onthe movie. For new movies, which have larger displayboxes devotedto their reviews, the runningtime is in thesame shadedbox that givesyou details likedirector, castand ratingcode. In the exampleon the right, wecan see that therunning time ofThe HappiestDay In The Life
